  • Compact and small size, reliable and failsafe operation and low cost featuring fault current limiter causing the designer to take a close look into the use of passive fault current limiter(FCL) for the protection of power semiconductor devices in power electronic systems. This paper has identified the main parameters responsible for the development of ideal passive magnetic current limiter. The effect of those parameters on the range of operation and the voltage-current characteristics of the magnetic current limiter has been studied using tableau approach. Desirable characteristics are discussed and the simulation results are presented.

  • What is an ideal authentication method for smartphone banking services? And what are the critical elements to be considered when designing it? To provide valuable insight for these questions, this study investigates various authentication requirements to be considered in smartphone banking service with the aspect of security, convenience and cost. By applying Analytic Network Process (ANP), this study first analyzes priorities among the requirements and then draws an ideal authentication method for smartphone banking service. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis has been conducted by varying the relative importance of several requirements. The results from the judgment of 72 experts revealed that, although Korean government has obliged the use of Public Key certificate, OPT and biometric alternatives may prove to be more appropriate for the smartphone banking service. These results will contribute to the provision of more secured and convenient smartphone banking services.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems can provide valuable information regarding the safety of structures during and after ground motions which can be used by authorities to reduce post-earthquake hazards. Strain gages as a key element play an important role in the success of SHM systems. Reducing the number of required strain gages while keeping the efficiency of SHM system not only can reduce the cost of structural health monitoring but also avoids storage and process of uninformative data. In this study, a method based on performance based seismic design of structures is proposed for ideal placement of stain gages in structures. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated through installation of strain gages on an Airport Traffic Control (ATC) Tower. The obtained results show that the number of required strain gages decrease significantly.

  • The Internet-of-Things (IoT) has been deployed in almost every facet of our day to day activities. This is made possible because sensing and data collection devices have been given computing and communication capabilities. The devices implement System-on-Chips (SoCs) that incorporate a lot of functionalities, yet they are severely constrained in terms of memory capacitance, hardware area, and power consumption. With the increase in the functionalities of sensing devices, there is a need for low-cost synthesizable processors to handle control, interfacing, and error processing. The first step in selecting a synthesizable processor core for low-cost devices is to examine the hardware resource utilization to make sure that it fulfills the requirements of the device. This paper gives an analysis of the hardware resource usage of ten synthesizable processors that implement the Reduced Instruction Set Computer Five (RISC-V) Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). All the ten processors are synthesized using Vivado v2018.02. The maximum frequency, area, and power reports are extracted and a comparison is made to determine which processor is ideal for low-cost hardware devices.

  • In general, based on traffic data in a ideal traffic condition, BPR cost function is used to a variety of transportation policies. However, Some researchers have reported that BRP cost function is not appropriate for analyzing traffic pattern as well as forecasting future demand.(Spiess, 1989 ; Singh, 1999) Therefore, in this paper to solve this problem, a methodology based on data through Micro traffic Simulator Based(MSB) is developed. As a result following outputs are obtained ; (1) presenting a methodology to develop a travel cost function through VISSIM in order to assess transportation policies and (2) developing BRP cost function and MSB cost function from data analysis through VISSIM and verifying availability of MSB function by comparative analysis.

  • This study is carried out for understanding mode choice behavior of shippers and introducing ideal mode share between rail and truck in Korea. The model type is individual behavioral model and the input data type is stated preference (SP) data. SP data was prepared by design of experiments. The explanatory variables in models are transport time, transport cost and service level. The research result shows that it is more effective to reduce transport cost rather than to implement other strategies. For container, reducing transport cost and transport time and increasing service level simultaneously can strengthen the competitiveness of rail over truck transportation. On the other hand, for bulk freight such as cement and steel, it is better to reduce the transport cost than to do other attributes.

  • Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) is a systematic optimization process that allows users to compare different alternatives and to determine if a project is a solid investment. Many state DOTs have included CBA in their pavement management systems (PMSs) to help allocate state funds for maintenance, rehabilitation, resurfacing, and reconstruction of pavements. In a typical CBA, each pavement type has an assigned weight factor which represents the level of importance of this pavement type. To conduct an accurate CBA, it is essential to select appropriate weight factors. Arbitrarily assigning weights factors to pavements can lead to biased and inaccurate funding allocation decisions. The purpose for this paper is to outline a method to develop an ideal set of weight factors that can be utilized to conduct more accurate CBA. To this end, a matrix of all possible weight factors sets was developed. CBA was conducted for each set of weight factors to obtain a population of possible optimization solutions. Then a regression analysis was performed to establish the relationship between benefit and weight factors. Finally, a multi-objective genetic algorithm was applied to select the optimal set of weight factors. The findings from this study can be used by state DOTs to strategically manage their roadway systems in a cost effective manner.

  • An ideal semiconductor memory technology would combine or unify the attractive features of these technologies without acquiring any of the unattractive features. Such a memory technology, Phase Change RAM is now being developed using the class of elements known as chalcogenides. It is expected that this technology will eventually allow chips that have SRAM speed, DRAM cost, and Flash power characteristics and non-volatility.

  • Consumer electronics is rapidly digitalized invoking the necessity of digital signal transmission. Moreover, even in consumer electronics, occasionally signal speed is over 1Gbps and long distance transmission(over 5 meters) is required. For these requirements, even though optical transmission is ideal, cost problem has blocked up its entrance to consumer market. However, inexpensive and high speed optical devices such as VCSEL, PIN or MSN PD with large detecting area and low capacitance and Plastic Optical Fiber have been developed so that optical solution can be compete with electrical one in consumer electronics.

  • It has well reported that tumor markers have many advantages like minimally invasive, convenient use, low cost but also has many limitations like low sensitivity and specificity, relevance of prognosis, low organ specificity. Although no tumor markers are ideal, many tumor markers are used for cancer diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and surveillance monitoring after treatment. We review the classification and characteristics of tumor markers according cancer types and clinical roles in current times.
