The present paper deals with the comparative study of resistance performance with refrigerated ice and synthetic ice according to the variation of hull form characteristics. The resistance test has been conducted in pack ice condition in each concentration condition. Stem angle has been chosen as main parameters for the variation of hull form characteristics. The correlation of performance between with the refrigerated ice and with the synthetic ice has been shown according to the variation for stem angles. The present study show the possibility of ice test in general towing tank with synthetic ice for the time-consuming research such as hull form optimization although that is confined in pack ice condition. The more parametric study for the properties of synthetic ice is expected to be conducted to have more close correspondence for the test results of refrigerated ice in near future.

The cost evaluation for voyage route planning in an ice-covered sea is one of the major topics among ship owners. Information of the ice properties, such as ice type, concentration of ice, ice thickness, strength of ice, and speed-power relation under ice conditions are important for determining the optimal route in ice and low operational cost perspective. To determine achievable speed at any designated pack ice condition, a model test of resistance, self-propulsion, and overload test in ice and ice-free water were carried out in a KRISO ice tank and towing tank. The available net thrust for ice and an estimation of the ice resistance under any pack ice condition were also performed by I-RES. The in-house code called 'I-RES', which is an ice resistance estimation tool that applies an empirical formula, was modified for the pack ice module in this study. Careful observations of underwater videos of the ice model test made it possible to understand the physical phenomena of underneath of the hull bottom surface and determine the coverage of buoyancy. The clearing resistance of ice can be calculated by subtracting the buoyance and open water resistance form the pre-sawn ice resistance. The model test results in pack ice were compared with the calculation results to obtain a correlation factor among the pack ice resistance, ice concentration, and ship speed. The resulting correlation factors were applied to the calculation results to determine the pack ice resistance under any pack ice condition. The pack ice resistance under the arbitrary pack ice condition could be estimated because software I-RES could control all the ice properties. The available net thrust in ice, which is the over thrust that overcomes the pack ice resistance, will change the speed of a ship according to the bollard pull test results and thruster characteristics (engine & propulsion combination). The attainable speed at a certain ice concentration of pack ice was determined using the interpolation method. This paper reports a procedure to determine the attainable speed in pack ice and the sample calculation using the Araon vessel was performed to confirm the entire process. A more detailed description of the determination of the attainable speed is described. The attainable speed in 1.0 m, 90% pack ice and 540 kPa strength was 13.3 knots.
Vessel's ice speed performances will be verified in ice sea trial but environmental conditions of ice fields are changeable according to the weather condition of ice trial area. Speed performance has to correct in the no wind, wave and current etc. after sea trial. Especially finding ice fields which is exact the same as owner's ice thickness and strength requirements is not easy. Therefore speed correction according to environment condition has to be done after sea trial measurements. Correction methods for ice thickness, ice strength, wave, wind and ship draft, trim, ice drift etc. are checked in ice sea trial based on literature review such as ISO standard, ITTC recommendation, journal papers and proceedings of conferences. Possibility of application for current and ice drift correction in ice field are discussed and measuring schemes and procedures of correction methods are described in this paper. All of correction schemes are calculated for 'Araon' which is ice breaking research vessel with Arctic and Antarctic ice field test results. Analyzed results shows that Araon is satisfied with her official ice speed performance of 3 knots with 10MW power at 1m ice thickness, 570kPa ice flexural strength.
The main purpose of ice model basin is to assess and evaluate the performance of the Arctic ships and offshore structures because the full-scale tests in ice covered sea are usually very expensive and difficult. There are various ice conditions, such as level ice, brash ice, pack ice and ice ridge, in the real sea. To estimate their capacities in ice tank accurately, an appropriate model ice sheet and prepared ice conditions copied from actual sea ice conditions are needed. Pack ice is a floating ice that has been driven together into a single mass and a mixture of ice fragments of varying size and age that are squeezed together and cover the sea surface with little or no open water. So Ice-class vessels and Icebreaker are usually operated in pack ice conditions for the long time of her voyage. The most ice model tests include the pack ice test with the change of pack ice concentration. In this paper, the effect of pack ice size and channel breadth in pack ice model test is conducted and analyzed. Also we presented some techniques for the calculation of pack ice concentration in the model test. Finally, we developed a new model test methodology of pack ice condition in square type ice tank.
Ice load is one of the important design parameters for the construction of icebreaking vessels. In this paper, the design ice load prediction for the icebreaking vessels under normal operating condition in ice-covered sea is discussed. The ice loads under normal operating condition are expected from sea trials in moderate ice conditions. In this sense the extreme ice loads during heavy ramming or accidental collision are not considered. Current study describes the global ice load on the hull of the icebreaking vessels. Available ice load data from full-scale sea trials are collected and analyzed according to various ship-ice interaction parameters including displacement, stem angle, speed of a ship and flexural strength and thickness of sea ice. The ice load prediction formula is compared with the collected full-scale sea trials data and it shows a good agreement.
In this study, a simplified analysis method was developed to evaluate the fatigue damage of an ice-going ship under broken ice condition. The global ice load, which is essentially calculated at the design stage of the Arctic vessel, and the hull form information were used to estimate the local ice load acting on the outer-shell of the ship. The local ice load was applied to the finite element analysis model, and the Weibull parameters for the target fatigue point were derived. Finally, fatigue damage was evaluated by applying the S-N curve and the Palmgren-Miner rule. For the verification of the proposed method, numerical analyses using direct approach were performed for the same conditions. A numerical model that implements the interaction between ice and structure was introduced to verify the local ice load and the stress calculated from the proposed method. Finally, the fatigue analyses of the Baltic Sea for actual ice conditions were performed, and the results of the proposed method, the method using numerical analysis, and the LR method were compared.
To navigate in ice-covered waters, the ice-breaking process is required. The ice-breaking mode depends on material properties of sea ice and ice conditions. The ice-breaking mode is classified into ramming and continuous ice-breaking. The ramming is effective on large ice features, such as thick ice ridge and icebergs, and the continuous ice-breaking is on level ice. In general, the impact time duration of crushing or bending on ice sheets is from 0.2 to 1.0 second. However, impact duration in ramming will be increased. The Korean ice-breaking research vessel ARAON conducted her research voyage in the Antarctic sea during the winter of 2012. The IBRV ARAON measured strain in ramming and continuous ice-breaking. Strain gauge signals were recorded during the planned ice-breaking performance and the unplanned ice transits in heavy ice conditions. The aim of this study is to investigate the ice load signals measured in ramming processes under the heavy ice condition. Based on the time history of the signals, a raising time, a half-decaying time and time duration were investigated and compared with the previous study which was suggested the five profiles of the ice load signals.

A full-scale field trial in ice-covered sea is one of the most important tasks in the design of icebreaking ships. The first Korean icebreaking research vessel 'ARAON', after her delivery in late 2009, had a sea ice field trial in the Arctic Sea during July-August, 2010. This paper describes the test procedures and data analysis on the icebreaking performance of the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from the icebreaking performance test in the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea during the Arctic voyage of ARAON includes the speed and engine power of the ship as well as sea ice thickness and strength data. The air temperature, wind speed and heading of the ship were also measured during each sea ice trial. The ARAON was designed to break 1 m thick level ice with a flexural strength of 630kPa at a continuous speed of 3knots. She is registered as a KR POLAR 10 class ship. The principal dimensions of ARAON are 110 m, 19 m and 6.8 m in length, breadth and draft respectively. She is equipped with four 3,500kW diesel-electric main engines and two Azipod type propulsion motors. Four sea ice trials were carried out to understand the relationship between the engine power and the ship speed, given the Arctic ice condition. The analysis shows that the ARAON was able to operate at 1.5knots in a 2.5m thick medium ice floe condition with the engine power of 5MW, and the speed reached 3.1 knots at the same ice floe condition when the power increased to 6.6MW. She showed a good performance of speed in medium ice floe compared to the speed performance in level ice. More detailed analysis is summarized in this paper.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using gauze frozen with normal saline or ice on thirstrelief and oral condition of laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group, pretest-posttest design was used. Participants (n=53) received either gauze frozen with normal saline (n=17), ice (n=18) or wet gauze (n=18) for thirst-relief. The subjective thirst level and oral condition of the participants were assessed before the intervention, 15 min after the first intervention and 15 min after the second intervention. Results: After oral care was provided twice, there were significant differences in thirst level among the groups. When oral care was provided twice, the oral condition of tongue, saliva, mucosal membrane, and gingiva was improved in patients receiving gauze frozen with normal saline or ice. Conclusion: Gauze frozen with normal saline and ice can be effective for oral care in reducing the thirst level and improving the condition of the oral cavity.
Recently, as sea ice in the Arctic has been decreasing due to global warming, it has become easier to develop oil and gas resources buried in the Arctic region. As a result, Russia, the United States, and other Arctic coastal states are increasingly interested in the development of oil and gas resources, and the demand for offshore structures to support Arctic sea resources development is expected to significantly increase. Since offshore structures operating in Arctic regions need to secure safety against various drifting ice conditions, the concept of an ice-strengthened design is introduced here, with a priority on calculation of ice load. Although research on the estimation of ice load has been carried out all over the world, most ice-load studies have been limited to estimating the ice load of the icebreaker in a non-oblique state. Meanwhile, in the case of Arctic offshore structures, although it is also necessary to estimate the ice load according to oblique angles, the overall research on this topic is insufficient. In this paper, we suggest algorithms for calculating the ice load of managed ice (pack ice, 100% concentration) in an oblique state, and discuss validity. The effect of oblique angle according to estimated ice load with various oblique angles was also analyzed, along with the impact of ship speed and ice thickness on ice load.
