The finite element method is used to simulate the navigation of an ice-area bulk carrier in broken ice fields. The ice material is defined as elastic, and the simulations are accomplished at four model speeds and three ice concentrations. The movements of ice floes in the simulation are consistent with those in the model test, and the percentage deviation of the numerical ice resistance from the ice resistance in the model test can be controlled to be less than 15 %. The key characteristics of ice loads, including the average ice loads, extreme ice loads, and characteristic frequency, are analyzed thoroughly in a comprehensive manner. Moreover, the effects of sailing speed and ice concentration on the ice loads are analyzed. In particular, the stress distribution of ice floes is presented to help understand how model speed and concentration affect the ice loads. The "ice pressure" phenomenon is observed at 90 % ice concentration, and it is realistically reflected both in the time―and frequency―domain ice force curves.

The icebreaking research vessel ARAON performed ice field tests during her 2016 Arctic voyage. The ship is subjected to ice loads through ice-ship interaction processes. Local ice load acting on ARAON's bow section was measured by using stain gauges installed on the inner hull plates and transverse frames of bow section. In this paper the local ice loads at transverse frames estimated from shear strain data were compared to ice loads from hull plate pressures by using the influence coefficient method. In addition to the analysis of local ice loads, the characteristics of peak ice loads with the ship speed is also discussed. It is recommended that the local ice loads estimated by calculating shear forces acting on transverse frames may be useful in estimating local ice loads on the hull of ship.
Ice loads may be conveniently categorized as local ice loads and global ice loads. Local ice loads are often defined as ice pressures acting on local areas of shell plates and stiffeners. Therefore, local ice loads are defined in all ice class rules. However, directly measuring the local ice pressure using the actual ice class vessel is a very difficult task because appropriate instruments for direct measurement must be installed on the outer hull, and they are easily damaged by direct ice contacts/impacts. This paper focuses on the estimation of the local ice pressure using the data obtained from icebreaking tests in the Arctic sea in 2010 using the Korean icebreaking research vessel (IBRV) ARAON. When she contacted the sea ice, the local deformation of the side shell was measured by the strain gauges attached to the inside of the shell. Simultaneously, the contact area between the side shell and sea ice is investigated by analyzing the distribution of the measured strain data. Finally, the ice pressures for different contact areas are estimated by performing a structural analysis.

Primarily, tower loads of a wind turbine arise from aerodynamic effect and a top head mass. But sometime asymmetric loads of rotor also affect on the tower loads. Especially ice formation on two blades out of three causes the asymmetric loads, because the ice formation on blades lead to large rotating mass imbalance. This rotating mass imbalance of rotor affects tower fatigue loads. So design load cases of ice formation on blade should be considered in the fatigue design loads of the tower according to GL guideline 2010. This paper describes the change of tower fatigue loads following increase of tower height in the condition of ice formation. Finally, the optimal operation strategy is examined in order to reduce tower fatigue design loads.

In this paper, a method to estimate ice loads as a function of the buttock angle of an icebreaker is presented with respect to polycrystalline freshwater ice. Ice model tests for different buttock angles and impact velocities are carried out to investigate ice pressure loads and tendencies of ice pressure loads in terms of failure modes. Experimental devices were fabricated with an idealized icebreaker bow shape, and medium-scale ice specimens were used. A dry-drop machine with a freefall system was used, and four pressure sensors were installed at the bottom to estimate ice pressure loads. An estimation equation was suggested on the basis of the test results. We analyzed the estimation equation for design ice loads of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) classification rules. We suggest an estimation equation considering the relation between ice load, buttock angle, and velocity by modifying the equations given in the IACS classification rules.
Ice loads can determined by many factors like ice properies and dimension, velocity and type of structures. The magnitude of ice load varies with the failure mode which can be predicted by failure maps if the aspect ratio and strain rate are known. To reduce the ice force, various types of structure have been investigated and it is now known that the identor shape plays an important role in reducing ice load on Arctic offshoe structures. The conical and wedge structures are good applied examples in the Arctic region. In this study, ice forces on single wedge indentors are investigated for crushing failure mode. The ice loads on wedged indentors are compared with those on cylindrical structures. Also the concept of "ice annual"is introduced to verify the ice loads to multi and single wedge structures.tructures.
In summer 2010, field measurements of local ice loads were carried out in the Arctic Ocean using the Korean first icebreaking research vessel, ARAON. In some previous studies by the authors, several investigations for the data measured at 2010 including the relationship between the measuring points and ice loads, the possibility for observation of higher ice load and the relationship between the ship speed and ice loads were reported. During 10 days in August 2013, new field measurements were performed in similar waters of the Arctic Ocean using the same vessel, ARAON. The aim of this study is to investigate the statistical properties of 2013 measurements and compare results by two periods.

One of the concerns that arise during navigation in ice-covered waters is the magnitude of ice loads encountered by ships. However, the accurate estimation of ice loads still remains as a rather difficult task in the design of icebreaking vessels. This paper focuses on the development of simple ice load prediction formulas for the icebreaking cargo vessels. The maximum ice loads are expected from unbroken ice sheet and these loads are most likely to be concentrated at the bow area. Published ice load data for icebreaking vessels, from the model tests and also from full-scale sea trials, are collected and then several ice load prediction formulas are compared with these data. Finally, based on collected data, a semi-empirical ice load prediction formula is recommended for the icebreaking cargo vessels.
Herein, we present numerical simulation based model to study the use of a 'Tuned Mass Damper (TMD)' - particularly spring mass systems - to control the displacements at the deck level under seismic and ice loads for an offshore jacket structure. Jacket is a fixed structure and seismic loads can cause it to vibrate in the horizontal directions. These motions can disintegrate the structure and lead to potential failures causing extensive damage including environmental hazards and risking the lives of workers on the jacket. Hence, it is important to control the motion of jacket because of earthquake and ice loads. We analyze an offshore jacket platform with a tuned mass damper under the earthquake and ice loads and explore different locations to place the TMD. Through, selected parametric variations a suitable location for the placement of TMD for the jacket structure is arrived and this implies the design applicability of the present research. The ANSYS*TM mechanical APDL software has been used for the numerical modeling and analysis of the jacket structure. The dynamic response is obtained under dynamic seismic and ice loadings, and the model is attached with a TMD. Parameters of the TMD are studied based on the 'Principle of Absorption (PoA)' to reduce the displacement of the deck level in the jacket structure. Finally, in our results, the proper mass ratio and damping ratios are obtained for various earthquake and ice loads.
Ice-going ships such as icebreakers, icebreaking tankers, and icebreaking LNG carriers are subjected to wave loads in open water and ice loads in ice-covered water. In terms of the ship's structural design, the local ice load is important. The fatigue failure due to repeated ice loads is also important. ISO 19906 specifies the assessment of the fatigue limit for a polar offshore structures. In addition, Lloyd's Register refers to fatigue damage based on ShipRight FDA ICE. In ShipRight FDA ICE, the fatigue damage indices due to wave and ice loads are simply presented as 0.5 for each load. It also states that the sum of the two fatigue damage indices should not exceed one. This study calculated and analyzed the fatigue damage index and fatigue life considering ARAON's voyage schedules and the assumed Antarctic voyage based on data measured during the Arctic voyage of ARAON in 2010.
