  • The relationship between Confucian tradition and modern China has been discussed since the last century only on a preconceived level of "pre-modernization" without practical orientation, since the discussion has been referred to the modern West while China has not yet commenced modernization. Such being the case, it is of great significance to revert to this topic in the contemporary context of China's modernization. In other words, such new discussions are concerned with a series of difficulties China is presently confronted. To put it brief, the profit-oriented market economy has bit by bit undermined the traditional customs of the mild agricultural society, resulting in the emotional apathy among people, crush of the ethical order, discard of morality in life, ignorance of man's spiritual existence, and ultimately the extremely unbalanced development of "beggar-thy-neighbor" situation among ethnic groups, countries and regions. Since Confucius time, the Confucian tradition has always been attaching great importance to purify customs through social rules for etiquette and harmony, in the process of which, the ethic order is arranged to promote the emotional communication among group members, the individuals are cultivated to enhance their spiritual realms, and most importantly, those social rules for etiquette and harmony are casted as forms of civilization so as to achieve peace and harmony of the whole world. The integration of these three aspects of the Confucian tradition can undoubtedly provide a reference for solving considerable problems confronted by modern China.

  • Oral literature can largely be categorized into myth, legend, and folktales, which are stories orally transmitted from the prehistoric times. The purpose of this study is to compare the discourse on the oral literature of the East and the West from a cultural studies viewpoint by focusing on its "symbolic systems," particularly "figures of speech," or "tropic traits", in order to utilize this oral literature as a resource in the study of Northeast Asian culture. Undergoing modernization, the symbolic meaning of oral literature has been demythologized both in the West and in Northeast Asia. Of course, oral literature, verbally transmitted over a long period of time, has naturally been changed over time and even "contaminated" in a sense by losing its original archaic archetype while it was textualized with letters during the early period of the modernization process. Nevertheless, the principle of "resemblance" and "similarity" between nature/universe and human/humanity, which has been stripped away in modernity, can still be found in oral literature with its mythic power. For this reason, the study of oral literature in the West has attempted to restore the lost magical power within it, particularly in myth. As such, this study delves into the symbolism of the mythic thought of Northeast Asian countries, namely Korea, China, and Japan, which has been lost in the course of their compressed modernization, in relation to the tropic figures of their oral literatures.

  • This is a preliminary study for examining the identity issue of the current Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). In order to examine the identity issue, it is necessary to understand "what" current TKM is. The current TKM has been formed in the complicated historical settings and the newly formed academic geography of modern times, completely different from those of the traditional era. This paper took diachronic and synchronic approaches in order to understand the current TKM. In the process of modernization and scientization of the TKM-which had begun in the early twentieth century-the western medical knowledge merged into the TKM. Also, as the College education of the TKM began after the Liberation from the Japanese colonial rule, the TKM scholars accepted the western medical department system to develop the TKM into professional knowledge. Meanwhile, since the late 1970s, the TKM has been influenced by the modern Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and the TCM knowledge also merged into the TKM. And recently, the research methodology of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and the clinical research technique of the western medicine-like Evidence based Medicine (EBM)-are affecting the scientization and clinical study of the TKM. The current TKM has been formed as a result of the hybridization of these different knowledges. These changes in the TKM were inevitable for the survival of it in the fast changing world. But these changes brought with them problems. Among those, the identity issue is the most important and crucial.

  • Korean Oriental Medicine has experienced a dramatic status change since the 19th century. Korean Oriental Medicine had been the only authentic medicine, but lost its status and fell as an illegal medicine through the Japanese rule, and recently revived successfully. The dramatic change of Korean Oriental Medicine needs an explanation. This paper explored the cause of the dramatic change and found the following things. First, the medical policy of the State directly influenced to the status of Korean Oriental Medicine. During the Japanese rule, the medical policy for Korean Oriental Medicine was very oppressive. After Liberation, a kind of noninterference policy was carried out. The change of the medical policy gave direct influence to the status of Korean Oriental Medicine. Second, the needs for medical service have been expanded. At the same time, the concern for tradition has been increased. And the supply of Korean Oriental Medicine has also increased by the establishments of Korean Oriental Medicine departments. Based on the above factors, Korean Oriental Medicine has achieved a remarkable status change during last several decades. Its role which is getting the excellent merits on the mass transportation, rapid transit. safety, state period, energy efficiency, and prevention of environmental pollution has been reconsidered. Element of horizontal alignment In an existing railroad line is needed as basic materials, when it will be improved or moved. If its design drawing was lost or damaged, it is impossible to recover. It is riot easy to repair for it as disasters. We must understand an existing railroad line to bring a function included a basic geography situation. In this studies we acquire, analyze. and handle the digital picture of railroads and then reappear shape of three dimension. But also we want to contribute to establish the facilities information choosing materials of existing railroad line in outputting the alignment element by reverse.
