  • This paper argues that media criticism should be reestablished as an academic movement leading to the maintenance and maturity of democracy. Korean democracy has been withdrawn both procedurally and practically. However, the Korean media do not properly monitor democratic retreat. The purpose of journalism is to provide people with the information they need to be free and self-governed, and the public sphere is a condition of deliberative democracy. This paper proposed three practical strategies for media criticism. First, it is the overcoming of the conservative-progressive frame. It is important to look at what kind of media is responsible for democratic retreat. Second, media criticism should be expanded on workers and capitalists. Korea's labor relations are as distorted as the public sphere. Korean journalism did not set agenda for labor relations. Most reports were 'capitalist bias'. Finally, Media criticism should be the empowerment of the people who are the sovereigns of the media.

  • This study critically reviews the justifications for the restriction of cable local channel's news commentary function in terms of the fundamental principle of journalism. By doing so, it tries to find some problems and ways to solve them. Broadcasting Law and Korea Communications Commission's Rule inhibiting the news commentary of cable local channel on specific issues conflict with the basis of journalism which is particularly represented in Broadcasting Law. The law and rule tend to solidify public opinion for vested rights of local worthies. In addition, they are likely to degenerate cable local channel to the tools for promoting local government. Therefore, this article proposes the revision of the law and rule towards permitting the news commentary of cable local channel. At the same time, it suggests a new broadcasting policy for inducing cable local channel to increase manpower resources and production investment.

For this study, the way of audience's decoding five pictures depicting a foreign worker's death and the captions for each were analyzed. Ethnographic method was used to find distinctive features of the audiences in decoding the pictures. Picture images without any title and caption shown to audiences bring quite different decodings from those of picture images titled and captioned. This led to the following three conclusions. First, picture image added by caption transforms the way the audience decode. Second, the cultural background of an audience works as a major variable, which means how the audience decode the picture image depends on what sort of cultural background the audience has. Third, it is also learned that picture image not captioned would not be able to represent the reality faithfully. The author made an experimental trial in this thesis how the communication process works successfully in a reality that photojournalists tried to represent and the way the audience decode it for the successful communication in photojournalism.

  • There has been growing debate over the current crisis of Korean journalism especially since 1997. While identifying primary causes as 'lack of credibility and public accountability,' however, this paper claims that self-regulation initiated by enlightened and professionalized journalists is a plausible solution. This paper thus pays attention to U.S. graduate journalism schools which provide specialized program about business/economic/financial news. For this, in identifying commonalities of the programs in terms of education goals, geographical/academic resources and course works, this study wanted to elicit meaningful implications for media education. It was suggested in conclusion that not only would Seoul be an ideal place for combining theoretical and practical training, but such programs in New York and Columbia university might be creatively applied to Korean journalism school. Finally, the author hopes that this review will be a good starting point for envisioning graduate level of journalism school in Korea.

  • Although many researchers propose that market-driven journalism is incurred by the worsening of financial situation as a result of intensifying competition in mass media industry, few studies investigated this claim with actual news data. This study analyzed the headline news of eight major newspapers and two terrestrial TV companies to find the weakening of 'orientating-journalism' function of Korean news media. The results revealed that the duplication rate of news items among ten news companies were decreasing, and the range of news subjects were broadened into diverse topics during last ten years. Therefore it seemed that the tendency of monopolization of a certain events or issues was weakening in news reporting. The financial situation of news companies is an important factor in explaining the change of news reporting. The companies with more worse financial situation have higher duplication rate of news topics along as the more amount of soft news items, leading to the gradual deterioration of their own voices in reporting. The rate of 'independent issue report' was also less than seven precent, thus their reporting is evaluated as having many limitations. In sum, the major newspapers and network broadcasting companies are still exerting strong influences in agenda-setting, but they(mostly newspapers) are suffering from the financial problems, resulting the deterioration of performing orientation journalism function. This study concluded with remarks about the role of major news media in current changing situation.
