  • Watching the leakage accident of the Gumi Hube Global AHF(Anhydrous fluoric Acid), I experienced how much chemical accidents affect on our society. Since then, many studies have been conducted on chemical accident in many fields. The use department wanted to find improvement plans for the process system and apply them to the field. The safety field wanted to study improvement of safety through the analysis of damage effects and apply them to emergency response to reduce damage effects. In this study, Mechanical safe devices have been applied which can respond quickly to chemical accidents occurring during the charging operation to enhance the safety of the AFH ISO Tank(Anhydrous fluoric Acid International Organization for Standardization Tank). Investigation of similar tanks confirmed that other chlorine tanks with the same working procedure as AHF ISO Tank have a mechanical safety device, EFV(Excess Flow Valve). Applicability and performance for emergency shutdown when EFV is introduced in AHF ISO Tank can be verified by comparing and examining the accident situation of Hube Global Accident and the accident in Ulsan 2018. Comparing accident cases, expected performance and applicability, It is suggested that EFV, a mechanical safety device that can reduce damage from chemical accidents to the tank and handle accidents early, should be introduced to the tank.

  • Internal pressure variation analysis and actual holding time test on ISO LNG tank containers which were made in Korea for the first time according to the special notification of ISO tank container manufacture have been conducted during the transport demonstration projects of the tank containers by tractor, train and ship. The internal pressure of the LNG tank container increased rapidly after LNG filling and dropped during moving the container. However, it was stabilized as time passed and followed the liquid-vapor equilibrium graph. In addition, actual holding time of the tank container was more than 20 days which was satisfied with the special notification of LNG tank container manufacture.

  • This study aims to analyze and evaluate the structural strength of a 53ft Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tank container according to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 1496-3, amidst growing global demand for LNG transportation. The research was conducted in two main stages: structural analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) under various load conditions, and structural strength tests following ISO 1496-3 test procedures. The structural analysis was performed considering different loading conditions to assess the structural safety of the tank container. Calculated stresses were compared with allowable stress under specified load conditions. The structural strength tests were conducted at Mokpo National University's Subsea Umbilical cable Riser Flowline R&D Center, which provided a suitable testing environment. The study found that calculated stresses met the allowable stress under specified load conditions, confirming the structural safety of the tank container. Additionally, the maximum deformation and permanent deformation satisfied the design criteria for all test cases, indicating the container's structural strength meets requirements. The research also contributed valuable data for future structural strength tests of similar products and facilitated the development of safe and efficient LNG transportation solutions by developing effective test procedures in accordance with ISO 1496-3 standards.

  • This paper describes the evaluation of noise influence for residental and boundary areas in 75MW thermal power plant. It includes the measurements of noise level around the boundary area of the plant, identification of noise propagating path, and discussion on the measures. Noise assessments are carried out based on the ISO 3744, ISO 9613-1 and ISO 9613-2 to predict the noise distribution of specific locations from the noise sources such as power transformers, flash vent-pipe, I.D.fan, and stack. It is identified the vent-pipe of flash tank in thermal power plant as the root cause of the environmental noise during the plant commissioning process.

  • The diverter system is a key component in achieving a high accuracy liquid flow rate standard using a static gravimetric system with a flying start and stop method. The diverter is a moving device used to direct flow alternately along its normal course(by pass) or towards the weighing tank. The time needed for collection into the weighing tank is measured using a timer. So it is important to the diversion period is sufficiently fast and triggering point of timer which is determined the filling time. On this studies show that uncertainty of diverter system for changing diversion speed and triggering point was estimated in accordance with Guide to The Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement(ISO).

  • This paper presents a strength safety evaluation of composite pressure container for hydrogen fuel tanks with a storage capacity of 104 liter and 70MPa pressure. The carbon fiber composite container is manufactured by an aluminum liner of Al6061-T6 and composite multi-layers of hoop winding layer in circumferential direction, $12^{\circ}C$ inclined winding layer and $70^{\circ}C$winding layer in helical direction respectively. The FEM results on the strength safety of composite fuel tanks were evaluated with a criterion of design safety of US DOT-CFFC and KS B ISO 11119-2 codes. The FEM computed results indicate that the proposed design model of 104 liter composite container is safe based on two strength safety codes. But, the computed results of carbon fiber fuel tanks based on US DOT-CFFC code is safer compared with that of KS B ISO 11119-2. Thus the hydrogen gas pressure container of 70MPa may be evaluated and designed by US DOT-CFFC code for more strength safety.

  • Recently, shipping operators have been making efforts to reduce the fuel cost in various ways, such as trim optimization and bulb re-design. Furthermore, IMO restricts the hydro-dioxide emissions to the environment based on the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index), EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator), and SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan). In particular, ship speed is one of the most important factors for calculating the EEDI, which is based on methods suggested by ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) or ISO (International Standardization Organization). Many shipbuilding companies in Korea have carried out speed trials around the Korea Straits. However, the conditions for these speed trials have not been exactly the same as those for model tests. Therefore, a ship’s speed is corrected by measured environmental data such as the seawater temperature, density, wind, waves, swell, drift, and rudder angle to match the conditions of the model tests. In this study, fundamental research was performed to evaluate the ship resistance performance due to changes in the water temperature and salinity, comparing the ISO method and numerical simulation. A numerical simulation of a KCS (KRISO Container ship) with a free-surface was performed using the commercial software Star-CCM+ under three conditions that were assumed based on the water temperature and salinity data in the Korea Straits. In the simulation results, the resistance increased under low water temperature & high salinity conditions, and it decreased under high water temperature & low salinity conditions. In addition, the ISO method showed the same result as the simulation.

  • Coinjection of alcohol and air or alcohol flooding only were evaluated with 3-D soil tank for removal of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminant from soil. 70%-ethanol and 40%-isopropanol were used for non-NAPL-swelling alcohol and NAPL-swelling alcohol, respectively. 729 ml-benzene was placed in the 37 liter soil tank. Alcohols were respectively injected from the injection well placed near the bottom of the tank and mobilized free phase NAPL and aqueous phases were then recovered from the extraction well placed in the upper part of the soil tank. Approximately 50% of removed NAPLs were free-phase in all experiments. The results were completely different to the previous soil column experiment results and also implied that alcohol properties did not affect the NAPL removal efficiency in the 3-D soil tank experiment. Air was also co-injected with alcohol to evaluate co-injection effects on NAPL removal. Enhanced NAPL removal effect of co-injection of 70%-ethanol and air was also found even in the 3-D soil tank evaluation. However, co-injection effect of 40%-iso-propanol and air was less apparent. This study determined that the most important parameter governing alcohol flooding for NAPL removal would be extraction capacity to recover NAPL and aqueous phase flowing in the soil. More researches are required for improving recovery efficiency of extraction well in real soil contamination conditions.
