  • Many metadata registry management systems have been developed, which are based on ISO/IEC ll179. However, they do not follow the international standard, ISO/IEC ll179 nor provide some of mandatory functions. It is difficult to a develop metadata registry management system for domestic environment because of their hidden implementations. The goals of this paper are to solve the problems of the existing systems and to develop a metadata registry management systems for accumulation of primitive technologies. This paper also shows the metadata registry building process for the science and technology information field using the developed system. This system consists of Metadata Registry Layer, Core Component Layer, Extension Layer, and Service Interface Layer. The developed metadata registry management system follows ISO/IEC ll179 and contains mandatory functions for practical use. Therefore, it can be used as a guideline for building metadata registries and a development process of metadata registry management systems. We can easily reuse its components for development of metadata registry management systems in various fields because the system is designed and implemented based on the component-based development methodology. It also decreases time and cost for developing systems.

  • Various metadata registries have been built in many countries of the world. Although the metadata registry is an international standard, it does not provide a consistent access interface for handling the metadata registries. Therefore, all systems for managing them were developed by using different operations and access interfaces. It requires duplicate efforts on the same operations whenever metadata registry systems are developed. As a result, it causes unnecessary costs and efforts for building metadata registries, and also incurs inconsistency between the metadata registries because the previous developed systems use the different interfaces for the metadata registry elements This paper analyzes and defines operation patterns that are commonly used for the metadata registries. We defined and designed SQL/MDR extended from SQL using the analyzed operation patterns. SQL/MDR provides a standardized access interface for developing metadata registry systems. This paper shows the implementation of SQL/MDR and the result that we actually applied it to the bibliographical databases. By developing the metadata registry systems using SQL/MDR, we can reduce much time and efforts owing to its standard interface. It allows metadata registries to be accessed consistently. Additionally, it makes all metadata registries follow the international standard, ISO/IEC ll179.

  • The purpose of data mining is to extract multi-dimensional information from a large database. The only information that we can extract from a large database is the column name, data type or simple comments included in the columns of database tables. With such unstructured and scarce information, it is very difficult and time taking to collect and to cleanse data by analyzing the purpose, characteristic and schema of the column during the data preparation step. In order to solve this problem, we propose solutions for reducing the time spent data preparation step in a relational database environment in this paper. That is, we propose useful elements to be considered during the data preparation step and then these elements are organized to constitute MDR(Metadata Registry) which is becoming the international standard of ISO/IEC : ll179. Finally, we propose a XML-based distributed MDR retrieval system that is convertible among heterogeneous systems and heterogeneous DBMSS.
