잉여 대역폭 소비 큐를 이용한 계층적 잉여 대역폭 페어 큐잉 (Excess Bandwidth Hierarchical Fair Queueing Using Excess Bandwidth Consumer Queue)

  • 인터넷에서 서비스 품질을 제공하기 위해 대역폭에 대한 스케줄링 기술은 중요한 요소 중 하나로서 많은 알고리즘이 개발되었다. 그러나 기존의 스케줄링 알고리즘은 잉여 대역폭 분배에 있어 융통성을 제공하고 있지 않다. 이를 보완하여 잉여 대역폭 분배에 융통성을 제공하기 위해 구현의 복잡도를 감소시킨 EBFQ(excess bandwidth fair queueing) 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 본 논문에서는 이를 확장하여 계층적 페어큐잉 시스템에 적용한 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 기존의 임의의 계층적 기반 알고리즘에 자연스럽게 적용할 수 있으며 동일한 공평성 등의 특성을 갖는다. 이러한 특성을 분석 및 시뮬레이션을 통해 검증하였다.

Drosophila as a model for unfolded protein response research

  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is an organelle where most secretory and membrane proteins are synthesized, folded, and undergo further maturation. As numerous conditions can perturb such ER function, eukaryotic cells are equipped with responsive signaling pathways, widely referred to as the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR). Chronic conditions of ER stress that cannot be fully resolved by UPR, or conditions that impair UPR signaling itself, are associated with many metabolic and degenerative diseases. In recent years, Drosophila has been actively employed to study such connections between UPR and disease. Notably, the UPR pathways are largely conserved between Drosophila and humans, and the mediating genes are essential for development in both organisms, indicating their requirement to resolve inherent stress. By now, many Drosophila mutations are known to impose stress in the ER, and a number of these appear similar to those that underlie human diseases. In addition, studies have employed the strategy of overexpressing human mutations in Drosophila tissues to perform genetic modifier screens. The fact that the basic UPR pathways are conserved, together with the availability of many human disease models in this organism, makes Drosophila a powerful tool for studying human disease mechanisms. Intestine Ischemia/reperfusion Induces ER Stress and Apoptosis in Miniature Pigs

  • The miniature pig is a very suitable donor species in xenotransplantation of human organs. Intestine ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and apoptosis has been associated with the onset of diverse diseases. Thus, we examined the effect of intestine I/R on the expression of ER stress and apotptosis related molecules. In the present study, I/R induced phosphorylation of protein kinase-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK), IRE, and ATF-4. I/R also increased the expression of the proapoptotic transcription factor CAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP). In addition, I/R decreased the expression of Bcl-2, but increased the expression of Bax, cleaved PARP, and cleaved caspase-3. Moreover, I/R increased splicing form of XBP-1 mRNA and the expression of caspase-6 and caspase-3 mRNA. In conclusion, intestine I/R induced ER stress and apoptosis in miniature pig.

  • FLHT-2 실험 결과를 사용하여 원자력발전소의 중대사고발생시 노심의 거동을 해석하기 위한 전산코드인 SCDAP코드를 평가하였다. 계산결과에 의하면 코드는 실험시 측정된 노심의 온도경향, 총수소발생량 및 순간최대수소발생율, 그리고 연료봉내압과 피복재파열시간을 잘 예측하는 것으로 평가되었다. 그러나 이상유체높이와 복사열전달 및 zircaloy의 급격한 산화 시작 온도에 대한 모델은 수정되어야 할 것으로 평가되었다. 또한 핵 연료봉에서의 gap을 고려하여주는 것은 노심손상현상의 정확한 예측에 커다란 도움을 줄 수 있다는 것이 밝혀졌다.

한국과 타지역간의 수도생육기간 비교 (Comparison of the Growth Duration of Rice Varieties Grown in Korea and Other Countries)

  • 본 연구는 1978년 국제연락수도내랭성검정시험(IRCTN) 계획에 따라 237품종을 10개지역에 공시하여 한국의 춘천 내랭성검정포에서의 수도생육기간과 타지역에서의 생육기간과의 비교분석하여 수도품종의 출수성에 대한 지역감의 관계를 알기 위하여 실시하였다. 1. 춘천과 타지역간의 수도생육기간은 모두 높은 정의 상관관계를 보였는데 일장반응이 예민한 품종들은 예외적인 반응을 보였다. 2. 타지역에서 생육기간이 짧았던 품종이 춘천에서도 동일한 경향을 보일 수 있는 확율은 63-72%였는데 이는 춘천이 타지역보다 생육기간중의 일장이 길기 때문이었다. 3. 춘천에서 생육기간이 짧은 품종을 병발하여 위도가 낮은 지역에 보내면 일장반응에 의하여 생육기간이 짧았던 품종들이 제외되는 결과를 가져오며 내랭성을 동시에 검정할 수 있기 때문에 육종효과를 증대시킬 수 있을 것이다.

Ramon Guillermo, Scholar-Activist of Indonesian and Philippine Society

  • This paper presents the work of Southeast Asian scholar Ramon Guillermo. Using sophisticated computer-aided methods, Guillermo approaches a range of topics in the wide fields of social sciences and the humanities. A creative writer as well as an activist, Guillermo grounds his studies in nationalism and Marxism. Particularly interested in Indonesian and Philippine society and culture, Guillermo engages with the writings of labor leaders Tan Malaka and Lope K. Santos, translations of Marx's Capital into Bahasa and Filipino, and studies as well the discursive and historical connections between the Communist Parties of both countries. The paper aims to introduce the innovations of Guillermo's studies, particularly in the fields of cultural studies and translation studies. The type of cultural studies Guillermo practices is empirical, taking inspiration from innovations done in the digital humanities. Guillermo is most opposed to trendy, fashion-seeking approaches that are not grounded on history. He reserves particular ire for "hip" postcolonialism, and instead praises studies that are founded on politics and materialism. In translation studies, Guillermo goes beyond the mere cataloguing of mistakes. For him, it is the mistakes and "perversities" of a translation that is interesting and illuminating. Guillermo himself is a translator, and the paper ends with a brief discussion of his production in this field.

Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain protein 2 attenuates ER stress-induced cell death in vascular smooth muscle cells

  • Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain protein 2 (NOD2), an intracellular pattern recognition receptor, plays important roles in inflammation and cell death. Previously, we have shown that NOD2 is expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and that NOD2 deficiency promotes VSMC proliferation, migration, and neointimal formation after vascular injury. However, its role in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-induced cell death in VSMCs remains unclear. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate ER stress-induced viability of mouse primary VSMCs. NOD2 deficiency increased ER stress-induced cell death and expression levels of apoptosis mediators (cleaved caspase-3, Bax, and Bak) in VSMCs in the presence of tunicamycin (TM), an ER stress inducer. In contrast, ER stress-induced cell death and expression levels of apoptosis mediators (cleaved caspase-3, Bax, and Bak) were decreased in NOD2-overexpressed VSMCs. We found that the $IRE-1{\alpha}-XBP1$ pathway, one of unfolded protein response branches, was decreased in NOD2-deficient VSMCs and reversed in NOD2-overexpressed VSMCs in the presence of TM. Furthermore, NOD2 deficiency reduced the expression of XBP1 target genes such as GRP78, PDI-1, and Herpud1, thus improving cell survival. Taken together, these data suggest that the induction of ER stress through NOD2 expression can protect against TM-induced cell death in VSMCs. These results may contribute to a new paradigm in vascular homeostasis.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Response Mediates Shikonin-Induced Apoptosis of 5-Fluorouracil-Resistant Colorectal Cancer Cells

  • Resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs is a significant problem in the treatment of colorectal cancer, resulting in low response rates and decreased survival. Recent studies have shown that shikonin, a naphthoquinone derivative, promotes apoptosis in colon cancer cells and cisplatin-resistant ovarian cells, raising the possibility that this compound may be effective in drug-resistant colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to characterize the molecular mechanisms underpinning shikonin-induced apoptosis, with a focus on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, in a 5-fluorouracil-resistant colorectal cancer cell line, SNU-C5/5-FUR. Our results showed that shikonin significantly increased the proportion of sub-G1 cells and DNA fragmentation and that shikonin-induced apoptosis is mediated by mitochondrial Ca2+ accumulation. Shikonin treatment also increased the expression of ER-related proteins, such as glucose regulatory protein 78 (GRP78), phospho-protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase (PERK), phospho-eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2α), phospho-phosphoinositol-requiring protein-1 (IRE1), spliced X-box-binding protein-1 (XBP-1), cleaved caspase-12, and C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP). In addition, siRNA-mediated knockdown of CHOP attenuated shikonin-induced apoptosis, as did the ER stress inhibitor TUDCA. These data suggest that ER stress is a key factor mediating the cytotoxic effect of shikonin in SNU-C5/5-FUR cells. Our findings provide an evidence for a mechanism in which ER stress leads to apoptosis in shikonin-treated SNU-C5/5-FUR cells. Our study provides evidence to support further investigations on shikonin as a therapeutic option for 5-fluorouracil-resistant colorectal cancer.

인라인 롤러 남자 국가대표 선수의 300m 스타트 동작에 관한 운동학적 분석 (The Kinematic Analysis on the 300m Starting Motion of Korean National Male In1ire Roller Skaters)

  • 본 연구는 인라인 롤러스케이트의 가장 단거리인 300m 경기의 스타트 동작 분석을 함으로써, 지도자 및 선수들에게 스타트 기술에 대한 기초적이고 과학적인 자료를 제공하는데 목적이 있다. 연구의 대상은 국가 대표급 남자 선수 5명을 대상으로 3차원 영상분석을 통하여 인라인 롤러스케이트 T300m 종목의 스타트 동작을 분석하여 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다. 1)스타트 국면에서의 소요시간에서 P1에서의 시간이 절대적으로 영향을 미치고 있으므로 트레이닝을 통해 하지근력을 강화해야 한다. 2)스타트 속도를 증가시키기 위해서는 상체를 일으켜 세워 달리는 듯한 자세가 되어야 빠른 가속도를 얻을 수 있다. 3)상체의 전경각도는 출발시 뒤다리에 체중을 두고 반작용을 주는 자세에서 조금 세웠다가 첫발(오른발)이 진행되면서 착지할 때는 구부린 자세로 달리는 자세로 글라이딩 해야 한다.

생활터 중심 아동의 단기계속구강관리 효과분석 (Effect analysis of short-term oral health care on children at community care centers)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of short-term oral health care on children at community care centers, in order to allow them to maintain good oral health. Methods : The SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science), Window Version 18.0 was used to analyze the data for the children's present conditions of oral health; their ability to maintain good oral health; their general knowledge about oral health; changes in their oral health awareness; habit formations concerning oral health; and the satisfaction level of oral health education. Results : 1. While the average number of teeth before the program is 19.84(6.19), that of teeth after the program is 21.33(6.10). 2. Average test scores on oral health information of post-program are improved more than those of pre-program. 3. The 8th measurement of O'Leary plaque index is 3.27, which shows significant changes. 4. Satisfaction level with the program is 4.75(0.45), which shows that children are satisfied with the program. Conclusions : The paper shows that in order to maintain the oral health of children at community care centers, their habit formation and practice for the oral health is important. It also shows that cooperation among communities and public health centers is important to develop various oral health education programs like the program.
