We present the sensitivity calculation results for observing the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIRB) by the Multi-purpose IR Imaging System (MIRIS), which will be launched in 2010 as a main payload of the Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3). MIRIS will observe in I ($0.9{\sim}1.2um$) and H ($1.2{\sim}2.0um$) band with a $4{\times}4$ degree field of view to obtain the large scale structure (${\sim}3$ degree) of the CIRB. With the given specifications of the MIRIS, our sensitivity calculation results show that the MIRIS has a detection limit of ${\sim}9\;nW\;m^{-2}\;sr^{-1}$ (I band) and ${\sim}6\;nW\;m^{-2}\;sr^{-1}$ (H band), which is appropriate to observe the large scale structure of CIRB.

We present Near-IR photometry of the Arches cluster, a young and massive stellar cluster near the Galactic center. We have analyzed the high resolution (FWHM $\~$ 0.2") Hand K' band images in the Galactic Center Demonstration Science Data Set, which were obtained with the Gemini/Hokupa's adaptive optics (AO) system. We present the color-magnitude diagram, the luminosity function and the initial mass function (IMF) of the stars in the Arches cluster in comparison with the HST/NICMOS data. The IMF slope for the range of 1.0 < log (M/M$\bigodot$) < 2.1 is estimated to be ${\Gamma} = -0.79 {\pm} 0.16$, in good agreements with the earlier result based on the HST/NICMOS data [Figer et al. 1999, ApJ, 525, 750]. These results strengthen the evidence that the IMF of the bright. stars close to the Galactic center is much flatter than that for the solar neighborhood. This is also consistent with a recent finding that the IMFs of the bright stars in young clusters in M33 get flatter as the galactocentric distance decreases [Lee et al. 2001, astro-ph 0109258]. It is found that the power of the Gemini/ AO system is comparable, with some limits, to that of the HST/NICMOS.
KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) is developing a compact wide-field survey space telescope system, MIRIS (The Multi-purpose IR Imaging System) to be launched in 2010 as the main payload of the Korea Science and Technology Satellite 3. Through recent System Design Review (SDR) and Preliminary Design Review (PDR), most of the system design concept was reviewed and confirmed. The near IR imaging system adopted short F/2 optics for wide field low resolution observation at wavelength band 0.9~2.0 um minimizing the effect of attitude control system. The mechanical system is composed of a cover, baffle, optics, and detector system using a $256\times256$ Teledyne PICNIC FPA providing a $3.67\times3.67$ degree field of view with a pixel scale of 51.6 arcsec. We designed a support system to minimize heat transfer with Muti-Layer Insulation. The electronics of the MIRIS system is composed of 7 boards including DSP, control, SCIF. Particular attention is being paid to develop mission operation scenario for space observation to minimize IR background radiation from the Earth and Sun. The scientific purpose of MIRIS is to survey the Galactic plane in the emission line of Pa$\alpha$ ($1.88{\mu}m$) and to detect the cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation. The CIB is being suspected to be originated from the first generation stars of the Universe and we will test this hypothesis by comparing the fluctuations in I (0.9~1.2 um) and H (1.2~2.0 um) bands to search the red shifted Lyman cutoff signature.
To effectively utilize a flash and predict its effects on an infrared device, it is essential to know the infrared characteristics of the flash source. In this paper, a study of the IR characteristics of flash light sources is carried out. The IR characteristics of three flash sources, of which two are combustive and the other is explosive, are measured with an IR characteristic measurement system over the middle- and long-wavelength infrared ranges. From the measurements, the radiances over the two IR ranges and the radiative temperatures of the flashes are extracted. The IR radiance of flash A is found to be the strongest among the three, followed by those of sources C and B. It is also shown that the IR radiance of flash A is about 10 times stronger than that of flash B, even though these two sources are the same type of flash with the same powder. This means that the IR radiance intensity of a combustive flash source depends only on the amount of powder, not on the characteristics of the powder. From the measured radiance over MWIR and LWIR ranges for each flashes, the radiative temperatures of the flashes are extracted by fitting the measured data to blackbody radiance. The best-fit radiative temperatures (equivalent to black-body temperatures) of the three flash sources A, B, and C are 3300, 1120, and 1640 K respectively. From the radiance measurements and radiative temperatures of the three flash sources, it is shown that a combustive source radiates more IR energy than an explosive one; this mean, in turn, that the effects of a combustive flash on an IR device are more profound than those of an explosive flash source. The measured IR radiances and radiative temperatures of the flash sources in this study can be used to estimate the effects of flashes on various IR devices, and play a critical role for the modeling and simulation of the effects of a flash source on various IR devices.

We observed low-z quasar PG1426+015 (z=0.086), using the near-IR high resolution echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. Using an Adoptive Optics system, the full width at half maximum of the point spread function was about 0.3 arcsec, which can effectively separate the quasar spectra from the host galaxy spectra. We also maximize the total exposure time up to several hours per target, and develop data reduction methods to increase the signal-to-noise ratios. This poster presents the data reduction processes and sample spectra from the quasar and its host galaxy. These spectral lines will be used to study the physical mechanism of quasars, and the velocity dispersions of the stars in the bugle of the host galaxy.
Aero-optic phenomena cause the image position displacement on an imaging plane of the airborne optical/IR systems. Particularly, the aero-optic boresight error(BSE) is important factor for homing, positioning and aiming applications of hypersonic flight interceptor missile. In this paper, an estimating method of aero-optic BSE for a hypersonic flight vehicle is studied. A ray tracing method and a transform method of refractive index fields from flow density fields are combined with computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method.
An automatic spectrorefractometer with a Littrow spectrometer arrangement has been designed and fabricated to measure the refractive indices of solids and liquids from the visible to the near IR. The achievable accuracy is numericaly analyzed by varying the measuring parameters and the electromechanical system for measuring the prism angle with a rotary encoder and a position sensitive detector is fabricated. The performance of the instrument is discussed in detail and the results of measurements are given. given.
Infrared-Radio frequency double resonance (IRRFDR) and Infrared-Microwave double resonance (IRMWDR) spectroscopy have been used to probe a level of A symmetry for $CD_{3}$OH. Double resonance spectra of $CD_{3}$OH have been investigated over the range of 940 to 1020 $cm ^{-1}$ . Twenty K-type doublet transitions have been observed in both the radio frequency region, which covers 50 MHz to 1 GHz, and the microwave region, which covers 8 GHz to 12 GHz. The results propose new assignments of infrared (IR) absorption transitions and far-infrared (FIR) laser emission lines. These involve torsional excited levels and CO stretch states. Measurements of the A state splitting have permitted the determination of the asymmetry splitting parameters $S^{o}$(n, K) and $^{co}$ (n, K) for (n, K)=(0.3) and (1.3)
We propose a new graphical method for selecting a pair of optical and housing materials to simultaneously athermalize and achromatize an LWIR optical system. To have a much better opportunity to select the IR glasses and housing materials, an athermal glass map is expanded by introducing the DOE with negative chromatic power. Additionally, from the depth of focus in an LWIR optical system, the tolerable housing boundary is provided to realize an athermal and achromatic system even for not readily available housing material. Thus, we can effectively determine a pair of optical and housing materials by reducing the thermal shift to be less than the depth of focus. By applying this method to design a night vision camera lens, the chromatic and thermal defocuses are reduced to less than the depth of focus, over the specified waveband and temperature ranges.
Recently, number of studies for porous silicon have been investigated by many researchers. Multistructured porous silicon (PSi), distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) PSi, has been a topic of interest, because of its unique optical properties. DBR PSi were prepared by an electrochemical etch of $P^{{+}{+}}$-type silicon wafer of resistivity between 0.1 $m{\Omega}cm$ with square wave current density, resulting two different refractive indices. In this work, We have fabricated a simple and portable organic vapor-sensing device based on DBR porous silicon and investigated the optical characteristics of DBR porous silicon. DBR porous silicon have been characterized by FT-IR, Ocean optics 2000 spectrometer. The device used DBR PSi chip has been demonstrated as an excellent gas sensor, showing a great senstivity to a toxic vapor (TEP, DMMP, DEEP) at room temperature.
