The aerial parts of Spathiphyllum cannifolium were extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH and the concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$, successively. From the EtOAc fraction, three compounds were isolated through the repeated silica gel, ODS, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. From the results of physico-chemical data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as stigmasterol (1), $(2S)1-O-linolenoyl-2-0-myristoyl-3-0-{\beta}-D-galactopyranosyl-sn-glycerol$ (2) and stigmasterol glucoside (3). They were the first to be isolated from Spathiphyllum cannifolium.
Branched polycarbonates (B-PCs) were synthesized using melt polymerization method with four different end capping agents and vaying concentrations. The chemical structure of the synthesized PC was determined by FT-IR and $^{1}H-NMR$ spectroscopy, and the reaction of the end capping agent was confirmed by the existence of hydroxy group in FT-IR spectrum. The average molecular weight and distribution, glass transition and degradation temperatures were determined by GPC, DSC and TGA. The average molecular weight changed with the chemical structure of end capping agent, and 4-tert-butylphenol was estimated as the optimum end capping agent. The average molecular weights of B-PCs decreased with the increase of the concentration of the agent, the number average molecular weight represented 20000 when 0.05 mol% of 4-tert-butylphenol was added to B-PCs. The melt viscosities of the B-PCs decreased with the decrease of the molecular weight of B-PCs, and adding of the agent was not effected to shear thinning tendency.
A humic acid(HA, Aldrich Co) sample was subjected to ultrafiltration for molecular size fractionation and three fractions of different nominal size($F_1$: 1,000-10,000 daltons; $F_2$: 10,000-50,000 daltons; $F_3$: 100,000-300,000 daltons) were obtained. The structural characteristics of the size-fractionated HA were analyzed using their IR and solid state C-13 NMR spectral data, and the carboxylate group contents of the humic acids were determined using their pH titration data. The $^7F_0-{^5}D_0$ excitation spectra of Eu(III) complexes of the size-fractionated mgHA in aqueous solution were acquired($[Eu(III)]=1.0{\times}10^{-4}mol\;L^{-1}$, $(HA)=470-970mg\;L^{-1}$) at pH 5.0 using a pulsed tunable laser system, in which metal binding properties of the size-fractionated HA were elucidated and compared on another. Characterization of the IR and C-13 NMR spectral data indicated that the fraction($F_3$) with molecules of larger size were primarily aliphatic, while the fractions($F_1$, $F_2$) with smaller molecules of less than 50,000 daltons were predominantly aromatic. Titration data were consistent with an increase in the number of carboxylate groups per unit mass as molecular size became smaller. The $^7F_0-{^5}D_0$ excitation spectral data of Eu(III)-humate complexes showed that the peak maxima on these spectra were shifted toward lower energies with increasing molecular size of HA, indicating the higher degree of bindings of the Eu in the molecules of larger size. We also discussed the relationship of the lower energy shifts of the maximum peaks with increasing the molecular size of HA with the structural differences of the size-fractionated HA.

The stem woods of Lindera obtusiloba Blume were extracted in 80% aqueous methanol and the concentrated extract was partitioned with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), butanol (n-BuOH), and $H_2O$, successively. From the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions, five compounds were isolated through the repeated silica gel, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. On the basis of spectroscopic data including mass spectrometry, IR, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR, distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer, and two-dimensional-NMR gradient correlated spectroscopy (gCOSY), gradient heteronuclear single quantum correlation (gHSQC), gradient heteronuclear multiple bonding connectivity (gHMBC), the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as asarinin (1), (+)-catechin (2), (-)-epicatechin (3), hyperin (4), and nudiposide (5). Compounds 1 and 5 were isolated for the first time from the stem wood of L. obtusiloba Blume.
Composition and structure of synthetic glucitol fatty acid polyesters (GPE)-a potential fat substitute-were investigated. Also degree of substitution (D.S) of GPE was determined according to the relative ester distribution within it to evaluate the feasibility of GPE using as a fat substitute. The GPE was separated into single ester group by a normal-phase HPLC and D.S of it was identified to be 6. Absorption band at $1747\;cm^{-1}$ in the IR spectrum of GPE indicated that there were ester bonds within GPE molecules. which link fatty acid moiety to glucitol. Disappearance of the hydroxyl proton signals of glucitol in the H-NMR spectrum of GPE implied that most of hydroxyl groups in glucitol participated in the formation of ester bonds with fatty acids. In addition the D.S estimated from the quantitative proton integration of GPE coincided well with the D.S of GPE determined by hydroxyl value measurement. In conclusion, the GPE synthesized in this study was found to be a glucitol fatty acid hexaester so that it is expected to be used as a fat substitute in the near future.
Eight kinds of poly(oxyethylene, oxyisopropylene) dodecyl ethers were synthesized by adding ethylene oxide and isopropylene oxide with each 5 and 10 moles alternatively on dodecanol. The addition of EO and PO for eight kinds of sodium poly(oxyethylene, oxyisopropylene) dodecyl ether sulfates was identified with HPLC, $^1H$ NMR, hydroxy value, and IR spectrum. In order to verify the sulfation the number of EO and PO molecules was obtained by spectra and Epton method. The yields of products sulfated by chlorosulfonic acid were 90~96%.
In order to elucidate the mechanism associated with the solvent extraction of uranium(VI) using DEPA and DPPA as extractant the uranium(VI) complexes formed during the solvent extraction were isolated and characterized by means of IR, NMR, chemical analysis and molecular weight determination. It has been found that uranium(VI) replaces the acidic hydrogen ions of the extractants DEPA and DPPA to form chelated polynuclear complexes, the molecular weight of U(VI)-DEPA complex being $2.1{\times}10^4$. The isolated U(VI)-DEPA complex has been found to be the same chemical species as is formed during the solvent extraction process. In case of DEPA the distribution coefficient of uranium is the largest of the pure aqueous uranium solution and is increasing for the acidic solutions in the order of $H_3PO_4.
The fruits of Cornus kousa Burg. were extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and the concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$, successively. From the EtOAc fraction, three sterols were isolated through the repeated silica gel and ODS column chromatographies. According to the results of physico-chemical data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ (1), $stigmast-4-en-6{\beta}-ol-3-one$ (2) and daucosterol (3). They were the first to be isolated from Cornus kousa Burg.
