  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crowns according to the thickness(0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.1 mm) and IPS Empress II ceramic crown of 1.5 mm thickness. Material and method: Eight crowns for each of 3 zirconia crown groups were fabricated using CAD/CAM system(Kavo, Germany) and eight Empress II crowns were made from silicone mold and wax pattern. Each crown group was finished in accordance with the specific manufacturer s instruction. All crowns were luted to the metal dies using resin cement and mounted on the testing jig in a universal testing machine. The load was directed at the center of crown with perpendicular to the long axis of each specimen until catastrophic failure occurred. Analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparison test(p<.05) were applied to the data. Results and Conclusion: 1. The fracture strength of the zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown was higher thickness increased(p<.05). 2 The fracture strength of 1.1 mm thickness zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown was higher than the fracture strength of 1.5 mm thickness IPS Empress II crown(p<.05). 3. The fracture strength of 0.5 mm thickness zirconia monolithic all-ceramic crown exceeded maximum occlusal forces.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydrofluoric acid concentration & etching time on the shear bond strength between IPS Empress 2 ceramic and resin cement. Material and methods: Thirty three rectangular shape ceramic specimens($20{\times}12{\times}5mm$ size, IPS Empress 2 core materials) were used for this study. The ceramic specimens divided into ten experimental groups with three specimens in each group and were etched with hydrofluoric acid(4%, 9%) according to different etching times(30s, 60s, 90s, 120s, 180s). Etched surfaces of ceramic specimens were bonded with resin cement(Rely X Unicorn) using acrylic glass tube. All cemented specimens were tested under shear loading until fracture on universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min and the maximum load at fracture(kg) was recorded. Collected shear bond strength data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and Duncan tests. All etched ceramic surfaces were examined morphologically using SEM(scanning electron microscopy). Results: Shear bond strength of etching group$(35.89{\sim}68.01MPa)$ had four to seven times greater than no-etching group$(9.53{\pm}2.29MPa)$. The ceramic specimen etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid for 60s showed the maximum shear bond strength$(68.01{\pm}11.78MPa)$. Ceramic surface etched with 4% hydrofluoric acid for 60s showed most retentive surface texture. Conclusion: It is considered that 60s etching with 4% hydrofluoric acid is optimal etching methods for IPS Empress 2 ceramic bonding.

  • This study was to investigate the reused possibility of zirconia reinforced glass-ceramic(IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic) with sprue button in the flexure strength and fracture toughness. 40 disk-shaped ceramic specimens (20 specimens: as-pressed material; 20 specimens: reused material) with approximately 1.7 mm thickness and 15 mm diameter were prepared by "lost wax" technique. The remnants(sprue buttons) were used for repressing. The surface treatments for the discs were gradually abraded with 320, 800, 1200, and 2000 grit SiC sandpaper. The specimens were evaluated their flexure strength with the biaxial flexure jig(ball-on-three balls) and their fracture toughness with Vickers Indentation-microfracture test. The Weibull moduli were calculated for biaxial flexural strength. The mean flexure strength and fracture toughness of each group were $122.2{\pm}18.3MPa$, $1.00{\pm}0.09MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ (as-pressed ceramics), and $122.2{\pm}20.3MPa$, $1.01{\pm}0.10MPa{\cdot}m^{0.5}$ (reused ceramics). There were no significant differences in the strength and the fracture toughness between the as-pressed and the reused IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic (P>0.05). This implied zirconia reinforced glass-ceramic(IPS Empress Cosmo ceramic) could be used one more time by reusing of sprue button in the flexure strength and fracture toughness.

  • Dental ceramics exhibit excellent esthetic property, compressive strength, chemical durability, biocompatibility and translucency. This study evaluated the shear bond strength of composite resin to the new heat-pressed ceramic material (IPS-Empress System) depending on the surface treatments and bonding agents. The surface treatments were etching with 4.0% hydrofluoric acid, application of silane, and the combination of the two methods. Composite resin was bonded to ceramic with four kinds of dentin bonding agents(All-Bond 2, Heliobond, Scotch bond Multi-purpose and Tenure bonding agents). The ceramic specimen bonded with composite resin was mounted in the testing jig, and the universal testing machine(Zwick 020, Germany) was used to measure the shear bond strength with the cross head speed of 0.5 mm/min. The results obtained were as follows 1. The mean shear bond strength of the specimens of which the ceramic surface was treated with the combination of hydrofluoric acid and silane before bonding composite resin was significantly higher than those of the other surface treatment groups(p<0.05). 2. In the case of All-Bond 2 and Scotchbond Multi-purpose bonding agent group, the surface treatment methods did not influenced significantly on the shear bond(p>0.05). 3. Of the four bonding agents tested, the shear bond strength of Heliobond was significantly lower than those of other bonding agents regardless of the surface treatment methods(p<0.05). 4. The highest shear bond strength($12.55{\pm}1.92$ MPa) was obtained with Scotchbond Multipurpose preceded by the ceramic surface treatment with the combination of 4% hydrofluoric acid and silane.

  • This study was undertaken to clarify the microstructure of the different IPS Empress ingots by etching and to observe the change of leucite crystal structure according to subsequent heat treatment and the crystal distribution according to sprue types(${\phi}2.8mm$, single sprue; ${\phi}1.8mm$, double sprue) by scanning electron microscopy. IPS Empress T1, O1 ingots used for staining technique, and Dentin(A2) ingots used for layering technique were selected for this study. To observe the microstructures of these ingots before pressing, the specimens were prepared in splinters($3{\times}3{\times}3mm$) taken from the original ingots. And to estimate crystal distribution and microstructural change by sprue type and subsequent heat treatment. the specimens($3{\times}3{\times}3mm$) were heat-pressed through the two types of sprues with different diameters and numbers, and all specimens were fired according to the recommended firing schedule. The observed surface was ground with waterproof papers($#800{\sim}#1800$) on the grind polisher and was cleaned ultrasonically. All specimen were etched with 0.5% hydrofluoric acid. After etching, the surface was treated by ion sputter coating for SEM observation at an accelerating voltage of 20kV. In all specimens, the central area of ground surface was observed because there was less difference in microstructure between the peripheral area and the central area. The results were as follows ; 1. In the microstructure according to the ingot type, there was a wide difference between the staining (T1,O1) and layering(Dentin A2) ingots, but there was not a considerable difference between the T1 ingot and the O1 ingot for staining technique. 2. In all specimens, the crystal dispersion of IPS Empress ceramic using double sprue was significantly more scattered than that of IPS Empress ceramic using single sprue. The degree of scattering was strongest in the Dentin(A2) specimen and weakest in the O1 ingot. 3. In the microstructural change according to the subsequent heat treatment, all of ingots had some microcracks in the inside of the leucite crystal and the glass matrix after pressing. The inner splinters of the leucite crystal became smaller, and more microcracks occurred in the glass matrix due to increasing heat treatment times. 4. The size of leucite crystals varied from $1{\mu}m\;to\;5{\mu}m$. The mean size of mature crystals was about $5{\mu}m$. The form of the crystal was similar to a circle when it was smaller and similar to an ellipse when it was larger.

  • This study evaluated the shear bond properties of IPS Empress glass ceramic to enamel and dentin surfaces with three ceramic surface treatments, and three resin cements. The influence of thermocycling was also investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of resin cements, ceramic surface treatments, and thermocycling on shear bond properties. Ninety freshly extracted, noncarious human molars were selected for this study. The surface treatments of ceramic were etching <5.0% hydrofluoric acid, application of silane coupling agents(Tokuso Ceramic Primer, Clearfil porcelain bond, Monobond-S), and the combination of the two methods. Empress cylinders were bonded to enamel and dentin surfaces with three kinds of resin cements(Bistite resin cement, Panavia 21, Variolink). The specimens were aged in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours. Half of the specimens were then thermocycled 500times between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ with a dwell time of 15 seconds. Each specimen was debonded in shear mode and measured shear bond properties by using the universal testing machine(Zwick 020, Germany). The data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+(one-way ANOVA, Scheffe' s test and t-test). The results were as follows : 1. Without thermocyling, there was significant difference of shear bond strength to enamel surface between Bistite Resin Cement and Panavia 21 in case of etched and silane-treatment(p<0.05). 2. Without thermocyling, the shear bond strength of a group treated with silane and etching was significantly higher than that of a group treated with silane or etching with the application of Panavia 21 and Variolink(p<0.05). 3. A group treated with etching with the application of Variolink only showed a decrease of shear bond strength after thermocycling(p<0.05).
