  • This study examines IPO underpricing and its interaction with investor attention as one of key factors that can affect post-IPO performance in the short- and long-run. With higher investor attention measured as Google searches around IPO dates, our empirical results show that IT firms are underpriced more severely than non-IT firms. We also demonstrate that investor attention is positively associated with IPO performance in the short-run for both IT and non-IT firms. However, the impact of investor attention is more sustained for IT firms over a longer time horizon when coupled with a high level of underpricing while its impact is neutralized for non-IT firms. Given the unique attributes such as network effects embedded in the IT industry, our findings suggest that IPO underpricing and its interplay with investor attention for IT firms play an important role in shaping long-run performance and ultimately affecting fundamental value.

  • The price stabilization policies which require the underwriters to maintain post-IPO prices at some level (stabilization duty) or give put-back options to investors, have survived for eight years until June, 2006. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of price stabilization policies upon IPO underpricing in KOSDAQ. The study decomposes the influence of the price stabilization policies on IPO underpricing into ex-ante and ex-post effect. The price stabilization policies have shown to increase the IPO underpricing both at ex-ante and ex post bases. And the ex-ante effect is greater than ex-post effect. Among policies, the price stabilization duty magnifies the underpricing more than put-back option. This study differentiate from the precedented studies by including the whole period in which those policies are in act and by decomposing the IPO underpricing effects into ex-ante and ex-post bases.

  • The IPO(Iterative Physical Optics) method repeatedly applies the well-known PO(Physical Optics) approximation to calculate the scattered field by a large object. Thus, the IPO method can consider the multiple scattering in the object, which is ignored for the PO approximation. This kind of iteration can improve the final accuracy of the induced current on the scatterer, which can result in the enhancement of the accuracy of the RCS(Radar Cross Section) of the scatterer. Since the IPO method can not exactly but approximately solve the required integral equation, however, the convergence of the IPO solution can not be guaranteed. Hence, we apply the famous techniques used in the inversion of a matrix to the IPO method, which include Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel, SOR(Successive Over Relaxation) and Richardson methods. The proposed IPO methods can efficiently calculate the RCS of a large scatterer, and are numerically verified.

  • This paper shows the acceleration of iterative physical optics(IPO) for radar cross section(RCS) by using two techniques effectively. For the analysis of the multiple reflection in the cavity, IPO uses the near field method, unlike shooting and bouncing rays method which uses the geometric optics(GO). However, it is still far slower than physical optics(PO) and it is needed to accelerate the speed of IPO for practical purpose. In order to address this problem, graphic processing unit(GPU) can be applied to reduce calculation time and adaptive iterative physical optics-change rate(AIPO-CR) method is also applicable effectively to optimize iteration for acceleration of calculation.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate whether the auditor accreditation system for IPO firms improves the efficiency of the KOSDAQ IPO market. To verify the effectiveness of the auditor designation system, we time series compare four measures of IPO firms (earnings management, long-term stock performance, change in operating performance, and possibility of delisting). Design/methodology/approach - We test the hypothesis through event research method and regression analysis. Specifically, the dependent variables of the regression model are discretionary accruals in the year of IPO, 36-month holding period excess return after IPO, change in operating performance for 3 years after IPO, and dummy variable for delisting. And the explanatory variable is a dummy variable that separates the period before and after the implementation of the auditor designation system. Findings - We find that earnings management and delisting risks decreased more in the period after the implementation of the auditor accreditation system than in the previous period. In addition, we find that long-term stock performance and operating performance after IPO increase further after the implementation of the auditor accreditation system. Research implications or Originality - Overall, the results of this study suggest that the implementation of the auditor accreditation system for IPO firms contributes to improving market efficiency in the KOSDAQ market, where information asymmetry is high. Our study differs from previous studies in that it demonstrates the effectiveness of the auditor designation system using various measures.

  • This paper deals with an empirical study to statistically analyse various financial performances of the selected IPO firms using their investments on research and development(R&D) as an independent variables. The major results of statistical analyses have come up with the followings: 1) The regression analyses for change in average annual total market stock value/total assets over that of R&D expenditures showed the positive relationship, However, those of sales volume and net assets per share showed negative without statistical significances. 2) The statistical analyses in effect of the 3-year average total market stock value/total assets over the 3-year average R&D expenditures resulted in the positive coefficients what are statistically significant at 95% level. 3) Another statistical analysis showed that the financial performances of the IPO finns with deferred assets were better than those of the firms without them. In sum, the degree of investment on R&D by the IPO firms are expected to positively affect their financial performances except the Finns without having proper original technologies.

  • This paper analyzes the firms value and the business performance before and after Chinese firms got listed in the U.S. First of all, it was separated into term before U.S listed and after listed, and looked whether there was any change in the Tobin'Q. After listed, as time went on Tobin'Q decreased more. In terms of net sales growth rate, it dropped significantly after U.S IPO. Operating profits and net profits rate increased more after being listed in large corporation, but in small corporation cases, it produced an opposite effect on debt ratio and net interest cost. Interest burden continued to fall after being listed in small corporation, and it couldn't find the investment profitability, nor could it utilize ROE, ROI variable. ROE, ROI continued to fall after being listed, but current ratio and quick ratio increased significantly in small corporation. From this results, we can infer that the financial liquidity showed signs of improvement after being listed.

  • SPAC(Special Purpose Acquisition Company) is the paper company that aims the merger of private company only, and introduced in Korea at 2009. Until 2013, 22 SPACs were listed, and 10 of them made successful mergers but rest were delisted. When IPO, range of the volume of public offerings were 20~30 billion won. After IPO, some SPACs showed extreme price movements, but on average their prices were below IPO prices 1 year later and near IPO prices 2 years later. Successful SPACs showed positive and significant 2.94% 25 days Cumulative Average Abnormal Return(CAAR) before the public announcements of merger and also showed positive and significant 10.60% 45 days CAAR around the general meetings of shareholders. I concluded that SPAC market were constrained by several regulations, so deregulation is needed for SPAC market activation.

  • This paper empirically examines whether ownership disperses when a venture firm its IPO (initial public offerings). The data for this study were collected from 91 firms that were initially listed on KOSDAQ between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2007. We explored the influence of the underpricing of IPO on the change of large shareholders. The first finding of this investigation is that the number of shareholders of the venture firms who underpriced IPOs still increased after the closing of lockup. This is consistent with the findings of Booth and Chua(1996) and Brennan and Franks(1997). Second, the share of the large stockholders of the venture firms that a venture capital company invested decreased significantly after the end of lockup. Third, the venture businesses with higher ratio of flotation showed a significant decreasing of shareholders after the closing of lockup.

  • This study investigates the relationship between venture capital (hereafter, VC) syndicate diversity and the IPO performance of an entrepreneurial company backed by the syndicate. Specifically, focusing on three types of diversity within a VC syndicate, which are aligned with Harrison and Klein's seminal categorization in 2007 (i.e., separation, variety, and disparity), this study suggests their distinct effects on performance. Two stage least square analyses with 1,127 VC syndicate investments made by 6,268 VC firms strongly supported the hypotheses. The results showed that that capacity diversity decreases the performance and that expertise diversity and network diversity increase it.
