  • An innovative interpretation of the per-unit interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine model known as Design Space is presented in this paper. Based on the proposed Design Space formulation, an effective computation method to predict IPM machine performance factors, such as the current and power factor in a full range of speeds, is proposed. A systematic methodology is summarized, which translates the full speed range machine design procedure into the region determination on the so-called Design Space. The effect of dc-link voltage is also analyzed in a similar manner with the current and power factor. A series of IPM motors have been designed, and a preferred motor is selected with the help of the proposed Design Space Methodology (DSM), which has the best tradeoff between the nominal voltage and the dropped voltage condition. Experiment results show that the selected motor satisfies the machine requirements and all the design constrains, such as the current and back-EMF limitations.

  • Recently, Interior Permanent Magnet Machine(IPM) is widely used for traction motor in the high speed train. Due to the high efficiency and high power density of the IPM, it has lots of heat sources such as iron loss and copper loss. These heat sources can cause the demagnetization of permanent magnet, losses in output power and even irreversible defect of the IPM. To prevent the power loss caused by heat sources, the accurate thermal analysis has to be carried out. For the thermal analysis of the IPM, the thermal network is designed for this traction motor. The thermal analysis has executed at rated speed operation. The result of thermal network analysis can be used for the IPM design process.

  • This paper proposes a novel asymmetrical interior permanent magnet (IPM) brushless DC (BLDC) motor structure, which utilizes half-type permanent magnet (PM) configuration and has asymmetrical side gaps (slot next to the PMs) for reducing torque ripples. This structure uses 24% less volume of PMs than conventional IPM BLDC motor with a full set of magnets. The characteristics of the proposed motor are compared with three other half-type IPM BLDC motors through finite elements method (FEM) analysis, and the usefulness of the proposed motor was verified through experimental evaluation on prototypes of the conventional motor and proposed motor under various torque load conditions. This research obtained a high-performance IPM BLDC motor while decreasing manufacturing cost at the same time.

  • The current control for interior permanent magnet machines is more complicate than surface permanent magnet machine because of its torque characteristic depending on the reluctance. For high performance torque control, it requires state decoupling between the d-current and q-current dynamics. However the variation of the inductances, which couples the state dynamics of the currents, makes the state decoupling difficult. So some decoupling methods have developed to cope this variations and each current can be regulated independently. This paper presents a novel approach for fully decoupling the states cross-coupling using parameter adaptation. The adaptation method is based on the error between reference currents and the currents with state decoupling which have to follow the references. This method is more object-oriented than the other online parameter estimation methods in IPM machine and other electrical machines

  • This paper presents performance evaluation of an Integrated Starter-Alternator (ISA) prototype with an Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) synchronous machine under sensor-less operation. To attain a high starting torque at zero speed and in subsequent extremely low speed range, a hybrid signal injection method is proposed. At higher speed, an improved stator flux observer is used for the stator flux estimation. This observer is able to produce accurately-estimated stator flux linkage for high performance Direct Torque and Flux Control (DTFC) implementation. The sensor-less DTFC IPM synchronous machine drive takes full advantage of the capacity of the power converter and fulfills the control specifications for the ISA. The trajectory control algorithm responds rapidly and in a well behaved manner over a wide range of operating conditions. The experimental results verify the feasibility and advantages of the system.

  • The performance of direct torque controlled (DTC) interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines is poor at low speeds due to a few reasons, namely limited accuracy of stator voltage acquisition and the presence of offset and drift components in the acquired signals. Due to factors such as forward voltage drop across switching devices in the three phase inverter and dead-time of the devices, the voltage across the machine terminals differ from the reference voltage vector used to estimate stator flux and electromagnetic torque. This can lead to instability of the IPM drive during low speed operation. Compensation schemes for forward voltage drops and dead-time are proposed and implemented in real-time control, resulting in improved performance of the space vector modulated DTC IPM drive, especially at low speeds. No additional hardware is required for these compensators.

  • IPM(Interior Permanent Magnet) Machine의 전류 제어는 자기저항에 의존하는 토크특성 때문에 SPM(Surface Permanent Ma- gnet) Machine보다 복잡하다.

  • This paper shows the characteristics of performance for interior permanent magnet machine (IPM) considering driving conditions such as maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) and flux-weakening control especially in terms of harmonic loss. In particular, based on finite element analysis (FEA), permanent magnet (PM) eddycurrent loss and the harmonic iron loss have been computed where the models have been intentionally designed to identify the effects of pole-slot combinations on the loss while maintaining the required power for electric vehicle. From the analysis results, it was shown that the rotor iron loss and PM eddy-current loss of machine employing fractional slot winding are extremely large at load condition. Furthermore, it was revealed that the harmonic iron loss at high-speed operation is mainly distributed over stator teeth and rotor surface, which may aggravate cooling system of the rotor structure in the vehicle.

  • This paper shows a new magnetic field analysis of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines with an axial overhang structure wherein the rotor axial length exceeds that of the stator. The rotor overhang used to increase torque density of the radial flux machine is difficult to analyze because of extra consideration of axial direction, and thus it is general for machine designer to take 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) capable of considering both radial and axial complicated geometry in the machine. However, it requires too much computing time for preliminary design especially for optimization process. Therefore, in this paper a 2-D analytic method using a lumped magnetic circuit model (LMCM) is proposed to overcome the problem. For the analysis of overhang effect, the magnetic circuit is separated and solved from overhang and non-overhang regions respectively. For the validation of proposed concept, 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) is performed. From the analysis results, it is shown that our new proposed method presents good performance in terms of calculating electromotive force (EMF) and torque within a short time. Therefore, the proposed model can be useful in design of IPM with an overhang structure.

  • In this paper, the vibration source of IPM type BLDC motor was analyzed by finite element method. The main causes of the electrical vibration were RMF(Radial magnetic force) and cogging torque. It was designed model of minimized cogging torque and RMF equilibrium. Design models were selected the optimum model using the design of experiment method. And, the vibration experiment was carried out through prototype machine of each model. Finally, the experimental results were compared with the analysis ones.
