  • PEAT(Procedure/airspace Efficiency Assessment Tool) evaluates the efficiency of the flight procedures designed by Procedure and Airspace Design Program, such as fuel consumption fight time, flyability, noise footprint and etc. For noise footprint analysis among the efficiency metrics, the input generation module for INM(Integrated Noise Model) was designed in this research. The INM input files shall contain the information about aircraft types, noise model, airport and runway configuration, number of flights, flight routes, and also should be satisfied with the exact file formats for input data, since INM is not originally executable with file inputs. Therefore, it has been designed to convert the input data given in XML file to DBF. In this paper, the design result of the module which has functionalities to generate appropriate input file for INM, and to convert and save the analysis results from INM, is presented.

  • Aircraft noise is a important problem to inhabitants near airports. INM is one of programs for determining the predicted noise impact in the vicinity of airports. It has been widely using for engineers to evaluate aircraft noise. However it is difficult to predict aircraft noise in case of lack of exact INM input data. The exact informations about a fighter plane are not known well for a security problem. This study presents methods of reducing errors between measurement and simulation when the exact INM input data is not known. Especially we adjusted the thrust force of aircraft engine and reduced the error.

  • Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (INM) ensures the stability and safety of specific surgeries in high-risk groups. As part of INM, intensive tests are conducted during the surgical process. When INM tests are applied during surgery, a delay in notifying the operating surgeon in cases of neurological defects can cause serious irreversible sequelae to the patient. Aortic replacement, which is necessitated due to aortic aneurysms and aortic dissection, is a complicated procedure that blocks the blood flow to the heart. When arteries that branch out from the aorta and supply blood to the spinal cord are replaced, blood flow to the spinal cord decreases, resulting in spinal ischemia. In aortic surgery, INM plays an important role in preventing spinal ischemia and serious complications by quickly detecting the early signs of spinal ischemia during cross-clamping and reporting it to the surgeon. Therefore, this paper was prepared to help examiners who conduct INM by detailing the process, method, time, and warning criteria for INM. This paper identifies the need for INM in aortic surgery and the process flow for a smooth test, accurate and rapid examination, and subsequent reporting.

  • In this study, a novel actuator was developed by employing the newly-synthesized ionic networking membrane (INM) of poly (styrene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PSMAn)-incorporated poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Based on the same original membrane, various samples of INM actuator were prepared through different reduction times with the electroless-plating technique. The as-prepared INM actuators were tested in terms of surface resistance, platinum morphology, resonance frequency, tip displacement, current and blocked force, and their performance was compared to that of the widely-used traditional Nafion actuator. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that much smaller and more uniform platinum particles were formed on the surfaces of the INM actuators as well as within their polymer matrix. Although excellent harmonic response was observed for the newly-developed INM actuators, this was found to be sensitive to the applied reduction times during the fabrication. The mechanical displacement of the INM actuator fabricated after optimum reduction times was much larger than that of its Nafion counterpart of comparable thickness under the stimulus of constant and alternating current voltage.

  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring (INM) is well known to be useful method to reduce intraoperative complications during the surgery of nervous system lesions. Evoked potentials are most commonly used among the electrophysiological tests. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials are for detecting the problems along the auditory pathways including the eighth cranial nerve and brainstem. Somatosensory evoked potentials are applied for preventing the spinal cord lesions. The INM is affected by many factors. In order to perform an optimal INM, the confounding factors including technical, anesthetical, and individual factors should be kept well under control. INM has frequent electrophysiologic changes during the surgery and it might be helpful to keep one's eyes on which monitoring modalities are reluctant to change during each operation. The skillful monitoring and timely interpretation of electrophysiologic changes can drive the patient to be undergone surgery, even in high surgical risk group.

  • The purpose of spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF) ligation is to prevent neurological injury and the poor blood supply through ligation of arteriovenous fistula. Therefore, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (INM) is required via multimodal neurological examination for minimizing the side effects after surgery based on the patient's symptoms. Transcranial electric motor-evoked potentials (TceMEP) help to check the condition of the corticospinal tract. Whenever ligation is performed, TceMEP should be performed every minute to check for abnormalities. However, an examiner's lack of knowledge about the operation procedure and examination and also poor communication between the examiner and surgeon can cause incorrect timing of the stimulation of TceMEP that interferes with the procedure and causes side effects such as paralysis and motor weakness. As a result of this SDAVF ligation survey, it is believed that for proper INM, case reports will be needed along with further research and the examiner will also have to work closely with the surgeon to minimize neurological damage to patients.

  • Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is due to the vascular compression of the facial nerve at its root exit zone (REZ). Microvascular decompression (MVD) of the facial nerve near the REZ is an effective treatment for HFS. In MVD for HFS, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (INM) has two purposes. The first purpose is to prevent injury to neural structures such as the vestibulocochlear nerve and facial nerve during MVD surgery, which is possible through INM of brainstem auditory evoked potential and facial nerve electromyography (EMG). The second purpose is the unique feature of MVD for HFS, which is to assess and optimize the effectiveness of the vascular decompression. The purpose is achieved mainly through monitoring of abnormal facial nerve EMG that is called as lateral spread response (LSR) and is also partially possible through Z-L response, facial F-wave, and facial motor evoked potentials. Based on the information regarding INM mentioned above, MVD for HFS can be considered as a more safe and effective treatment.
