Qualitative study of software ILS application: Comparison analysis of maintenance types in software and hardware (소프트웨어 ILS 적용방안 연구 : 소프트웨어와 하드웨어의 유지보수 특성을 고려한 비교 분석을 중심으로)

  • The increasing importance of software has highlighted the need for the proper application of software ILS. On the other hand, the development of ILS has been somewhat limited to the area of hardware development. Therefore, this study examined the potential difficulties in applying software ILS to practical uses, and analyzed the drawbacks by reporting several domestic or foreign regulation cases. In addition, the differences between hardware and software ILS were examined by considering their characteristics of maintenance. Eventually, by establishing the proper range, this study proposes a development plan that is suitable for domestic weapon systems. The proposed research is expected to be helpful for offering specific plans for designing software ILS.

  • This study reviews the concept of Integrated Logistic Support(ILS), ILS standards, ILS elements, and the processes of developing ILS elements and Logistics Support Analysis(LSA). It also examines the potentials of applying ILS development process to building CALS systems in commercial sectors in order to accomplish business process innovation and achieve life-cycle cost savings in product and equipment management. In order to utilize the ILS approach for commercial industries, we need customizing the process of Logistics Support Analysis defined in MIL-STD-1388-lA. The success of ILS implementation depends on the determination of the range of ILS elements in relation with the application environment, and the appropriate development of those elements. During the development process, in order to analyze and design logistics flow processes and supporting activities, we suggest the object-oriented logistics process modeling approach with basic concepts and constructs embedded in objects. Several diagrams including Class Diagram, Class-Instance Diagram, and Integrated Instance Diagram, are provided. Simple Steps to follow are suggested for the analysis and design of inter-organizational logistics flow and support processes. The outcomes of the study are expected to contribute to stimulating the utilization of ILS concepts and development process during building commercial CALS systems.

  • The scheduling of planned maintenance problem of a system consisting of a number of components was studied. The purpose of maintenance scheduling is to minimize the cost of maintaining long-term operations. On the system side, the cost of a system shutdown can be minimized by grouping and inspecting a number of components. In addition, proper inspection cycles can be selected for each component to identify the failure sufficiently early to minimize the cost of the failure. To reduce the complexity of the calculations, the 'base interval approach' used in previous studies was applied and, in addition, the inspection cost savings from simultaneous inspections of multiple components were considered. To compare the effectiveness of inspection cost savings, this paper presents the results of simulation analysis performed by referring to the cases in the existing studies.

  • Although the weapon systems are becoming more diverse and complex, they are progressing in a short development period and a longer test and evaluation period. The more difficult the given environment is, the more efforts and performance of quantitative target values can be made by development agencies to carry out stable projects. However, these target values of the Integrated Logistics Support are not specified in the requirements and being set during the system development phase. In this paper, application of MOEs, MOPs and TPMs for ILS are presented and provided the basis for carrying out systematic Verification & Validation activities. As a result that MOEs of the ILS were chosen as Availability and MOPs as Mission Reliability, Logistics Reliability, Maintainability and Supportability and TPMs as MTBF, MTBCF, MTTR and so on. In particular, it is appropriate tailoring and apply the TPMs considering the cost, schedule, scope of work and characteristics of the project.

  • An efficient R&D Methodology with minimized development period and cost needs to be developed due to advanced performance requirements of weapon systems. This will require the performance of logistics support analysis and design verification in the development stages of weapon systems through VR technology. VR technology has been applied to the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) process as a part of collaborative system. In this study, we propose a development and application plan of ILS based on VR technology during the total life cycle of weapon systems. Moreover Digital Maintenance System (DMS) is introduced as a VR tool with key functions. finally, applications and improvement topics of DMS are suggested for use in ILS development.

  • Integrated Logistics Support can effectively respond to future wars and through the smooth logistics support activities bring a win in wars. Future warfare is very complex compare to Modern Warfare and required high level of strategies and tactics. Also, it is expected that the future war will be high-intensity war using high-tech weapon systems. Therefore, in this study, I look forward to the effective logistic support through the development of ammunition integrated logistics support which is a part of integrated logistics support(ILS). In addition, by studying a step-by-step system and supporting element of ammunition integrated logistics support, we can find the errors related to ammunition integrated logistics support system and suggest the direction to improve the system.

Optimal Preventive Maintenance Period in Complex Systems in Considering Components Reliability Characteristic (하부 구성품의 신뢰도 특성을 고려한 복합 시스템의 최적 예방정비 주기 산출)

  • Generally the life-cycle cost of complex systems composed of several sub systems or equipments such as train, aircraft weapon systems is spent much more during operation and maintenance phase than development phase. The maintenance cost for maintaining the availability and extending the life span of systems comprise a large proportion of systems operation cost. The cycle of preventive maintenance affects operation and maintenance cost a lot. In this study we introduce a way minimizing life-cycle cost of systems by calculating more reliable preventive maintenance period than the results of previous study using systems reliability data considered the reliability and failure effect ratio of sub-systems or components. We can solve the preventive maintenance period problem known as NP-Hard as quick as possible by using modified genetic algorithm than using other models introduced in previous study.

  • The configuration such as series, parallel and k-out-of-n of a repairable system directly affects its reliability. The maintenance strategy can also affect the overall performance of the system. The objective of this work is to investigate the possible trade-off between the configuration of a repairable k-out-of-n system and its maintenance strategy. The redundancy is considered to be the design decision variables, whereas the preventive maintenance period is considered to be the maintenance decision variables. The optimization model is used to minimize the overall life cycle cost associated with the system, considering constraint on reliability. Finally, genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal values for the decision variables. The result is compared with optimal values for considering redundancy and maintenance respectively.

Lean Maintenance Framework, Maintenance Strategy for ILS and Case Study on Lean PM (종합군수지원(ILS) 측면의 린 메인터넌스 프레임워크, 정비 전략 제시 및 린 예방정비(PM) 사례 연구)

  • Until recently, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) focused mainly on the development and acquisition of supportability factors (maintenance planning, maintenance tools, support equipment, supply support, maintenance training, etc.). In the long term, supportability strategies and policies are needed in terms of LEAN-like cost reduction, efficiency in the field of weapon systems. This study first introduces the concept of Lean, theory of Lean Maintenance and suggests Lean maintenance framework, maintenance strategy for ILS. The case studies were analyzed in terms of the maintenance time, maintenance man-hours, maintenance cost for Lean PM in a radar system. The direction of LEAN on supportability in a weapon system is suggested.

A Study of Domestic Application of U.S. LPD(Logistics Product Data) (미국 군수체계데이터(LPD) 국내 적용방안 연구)

  • Since the early 2000s, the United States has applied TLCSM to reduce life cycle costs while maintaining the weapons system's combat readiness. With the application of TLCSM, the ILS concept centered on the acquisition stage shifted to IPS, a concept that manages life cycle costs throughout the entire life cycle. In addition, LSAR for developing ILS has switched to LPD for developing IPS. In this study, LSAR in Korea and LPD in the United States were compared and analyzed, and policies necessary for the introduction of LPD in Korea were proposed.
