  • These should be constructed partially, because many prestressed concrete box girder bridges in situ have large cross section and long span. Therefore, accurate prediction of differences, both elapse time of each construction stage and exposure of atmosphere at each position of cross section, is very important. Though it is importance, engineers are apt to overlook it. This study predicted cracks due to shrinkage and stress concentration phenomenon by each construction stage and then, ascertained reduction of tensile stresses after applying retrofit scheme.

  • Conceptual cost estimates for domestic highway projects have generally been conducted using governmental unit-price references. Inaccuracies in governmental unit-price data has repeatedly addressed in the Korean construction industry which often lead to poor decision making and cost management practices. Thus, needs for developing a better way of conceptual cost estimating has been widely recognized. This research is considered as the first step in developing such model using real-world cost data based on actual construction activities. The data analyzed in this paper includes 41 P.S.C (Prestressed Concrete) Box bridges which broke into 4 categories based on construction methods such as I.L.M(Incremental Launching Method), M.S.S(Movable Scaffolding System), F.S.M(Full Staging Method), and F.C.M(Free Cantilever Method). Actual design documents; including actual cost estimating documents, drawings and specifications were carefully reviewed to effectively break down cost structures for PSC girder bridges. Among more than 40 cost categories for each P.S.C girder bridge type, 7 of them were identified which accounted for more than 95% of total construction cost (ILM: 99.47%, MSS: 99.22%, FSM: 98.18%, and FCM: 98.12%). In order to validate the clustering of cost categories, the variation of each cost category has been investigated which resulted in between -1.16 % and 0.59%.

  • Recently, various and new special methods of construction about steel bridges have been tried, and the study about local buckling under this methods have been performed too. But because of various cases, structural analysis is performed to check safety for each step of construction, and this is not efficient and economical method for time and manpower. So, for solution of this problems, general method about checking safety needs to he developed. In this study, local buckiling of web of girder due to various load cases under construction by ILM(Incremental Launching Method) will be studio considering various parameters such as forces, aspect ratio, boundary condition and so on. Also interaction curve will he plotted for each case.

  • This research focuses on development of the conceptual cost estimation models for I.L.M box girder bridge. The current conceptual cost estimation for public construction projects is dependent on governmental average unit price references which has been regarded as inaccurate and unreliable by many experts. Therefore, there have been strong demands for developing a better way of conceptual cost estimating methods. This research has proposed three different conceptual cost estimating method for a P.S.C. girder bridge built with the I.L.M method. Model (I) attempts to seek the proper breakdown of standard works that are accountable for more than 95 percentage in total cost and calculates the amount of standard work's materials from the standard section and volume of I.L.M box girder bridge. Model (II) utilizes a correlation analysis (coefficient over 0.6 or more) between breakdown of standard works and input data that would be considered available information in preliminary design phase. Model(III) obtains conceptual estimating through multiple-regression analysis between the breakdown of standard works and all of input data related to them. In order to validate the clustering of coverage in the preliminary design phase, the variation of I.L.M cost coverage from multiple-regression analysis[model(III)] has been investigated which result in between -3.76% and 11.79%, comparing with AACE(Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering) which informs its variation between -5% and +15% in the design phase. The model proposed from this research are envisioned to be improved to a great distinct if reliable cost date for P.S.C. girder bridges can be continually collected with reasonable accuracies.

  • Friction coefficients of the prestressing tendon are the basic information required to control the prestressing force introduced to PSC structure during jacking. However, the friction coefficients show considerable differences depending on the specifications, causing much confusion to designers. In this study, the ranges of the friction coefficients presented in domestic and foreign specifications are compared together to clarify the differences. Then, a procedure is proposed that can be used to estimate the wobble and curvature friction coefficients from field data such as elongation and prestressing force and from theory related to the friction. The procedure is applied to various tendon profiles of several PSC bridges constructed by ILM, FCM and MSS. The resulting values are compared with those presented in some specifications and assumed in jacking and a reasonable range of the friction coefficient is discussed. Lift-off tests are also performed in some bridges to further verify the results. The resulting wobble friction coefficients are not as small as those presented in AASHTO specifications but range from the lower limit to mid point of domestic specifications, while the curvature friction coefficients approach or slightly exceed the upper limit.

  • Recently, prestressed concrete(PSC) bridge structures with many repetitive spans have been widely constructed using the segmental construction method in many countries. In these segmentally constructed PSC bridges, there exist many construction joints which is required coupling of tendons or overlapping of tendons to introduce continuous prestress through several spans of bridges. The purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail the complicated stress distributions around the tendon coupled joints in prestressed concrete girders. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and a series of specimens have been tested to identify the effects of tendon coupling. The present study indicates that the longitudinal and transverse stress distributions of PSC girders with tendon couplers are quite different from those of PSC girders without tendon couplers. It is seen that the longitudinal compressive stresses introduced by prestressing are greatly reduced around coupled joints according to tendon coupling ratios. The large reduction of compressive stresses around the coupled joints may cause deleterious cracking problems in PSC girder bridges due to tensile stresses arising from live loads, shrinkage and temperature effects. The analysis results by finite element method correlate very well with test results observed complex strain distributions of tendon coupled members. It is expected that the results of this paper will provide a good basis for realistic design guideline around tendon coupled joints in PSC girder bridges.

  • The PSC bridge being built by ILM may have greater bending moment during its construction rather than after completion. When it occurs, Engineer should suggest to reduce stress-resultants than to make bigger cross-section with considering stability ,economics, and proper span-to-depth ratio. The used method is to install extruded nose at the end of girder. It substitutes the weighted segment for the light. From the reference, the stiffness of extruded nose, is 1/10 of the main girder, and the length is 60 to 70% of the length of the span, with little justification. In this study, the proper length and stiffness of the nose element is determined by the parametric study and idealizing procedure. The results about the extruded nose through the mixing of the parameter of its stiffness and length, the proper length of extruded nose is 80% of the longest span and the proper stiffenss is 13% of the bending stiffness of the superstructure and the proper length of extruded nose is 70% of the longest span and the proper stiffness is 9.5% of the bending stiffness of the superstructure.

  • The Ilsun Bridge is the world's longest box girder bridge(801m) with corrugated steel webs and has the widest width($21.2{\sim}30.9m$: tri-cellular cross section) among these kinds of composite girder bridges. It has fourteen spans(50m, 10 at 60m, 50m, 2 at 50.5m) where twelve spans are erected by the incremental launching method and two spans by full staging method. Special topics related to the structural safety of prestressed concrete box girder bridge with corrugated steel web in construction stage and service were reviewed. Investigations focus on the span-to-depth ratio, shear stress of corrugated steel webs and optimization of tile length of steel launching nose. The span-to-depth ratio of Ilsun bridge has been found to be well-planned while the corrugated steel web has been designed highly conservative and it has been observed that the conventional nose-deck interaction equation do not fit well with corrugated steel web bridges. As a result, detailed construction stage analysis was performed to check the stress levels and the safety of preceding design conditions. Finally, from the design review of Ilsun bridge, this study suggests optimal design issues which should be of interest in designing a prestressed concrete box girder bridge with corrugated steel webs.

  • In order to manage the deflection of a curved PCT girder bridge during construction, a GPS receiver was installed at the spot predicted to be the weak point during the incremental launching so as to measure the deflection at each construction stage. The deflections obtained in the experiment were compared with those derived from the monitoring of stress, temperature and inclination. The comparative analysis of the GPS measurement and analytical values obtained from finite element modeling with respect to the launching distance showed that the measured values differ by 0.6 to 1.6 times to the analytical results. This difference could be significantly reduced by thermal calibration. From the analysis of the behavioral pattern of the bridge, deflection occurred during construction in the concrete tip due to the deflection at the head of the nose at the 95m and 75m-spots, and compression and tension developed respectively at the compression weak zone and tension weak zone. The application of GPS appeared to enable more efficient management of the deflection during the erection of the curved PCT girder bridge and is expected to be helpful for the prediction and management of the behavior in future ILM construction sites.
