  • Recently power plants and oil refineries are focusing on capacity enlargement for better efficiency through higher temperature and higher pressure. Thickness of boiler tubes becomes lessened due to oxidation and erasion caused by high temperature bums gas flowing over tubes outside. Accordingly, mechanical stress of tubes is increasing and that is a critical factor to make a crack and fracture. To prevent those sorts of accidents, aging assessment for proper periodic repair and replacement should be conducted reliably and reasonably. We performed IIT test on Cr-Mo steel, one of the most heat-resistant materials for facilities in power plants, and we report the test result and the considerable effectiveness of IIT test.

  • Unsteady 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver is used to simulate the turbulent flow past an isolated prismatic cylinder at Re=37,400. The aspect ratio of height to base width of the body is 5. The turbulence closure is achieved through a non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The applicability of this model to predict unsteady forces associated with this flow is examined. The study shows that the present URANS solver with standard wall functions predicts all the major unsteady phenomena showing closer agreement with experiment. This investigation concludes that URANS simulations with the non-linear $k-{\varepsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure provides a promising alternative to LES with view to study flows having complex features.

  • Non-functional requirements plays a critical role in designing variety of applications domain ranges from safety-critical systems to simple gaming applications. Performance is one of the crucial non-functional requirement, especially in control and safety systems, that validates the design. System risk can be quantified as a product of probability of system failure and severity of its impact. In this paper, we devise a technique to do the performance analysis of safety critical and control systems and to estimate performance based risk factor. The technique elaborates Petri nets to estimate performability to ensure system dependability requirements. We illustrate the technique on a case study of Nuclear Power Plant system. The technique has been validated on 17 safety critical and control systems of Nuclear Power Plant.

  • Radioactive materials are released from the molten core into the containment at the time of a severe accident in a nuclear power plant (NPP). Filtered containment venting system is a popular and effective safety measure installed to obstruct the uncontrolled escape of radioactive materials due to the over pressurization of the containment. Different designs of filtered containment venting system (FCVS) are available today, each being the result of extensive research and development varying in one way or the other. This paper gives an elaborate description of the different types of FCVS currently being used, the current usage status in over 17 countries and the legislations regarding it. The recent researches being carried out in this field has also been discussed in detail. This present paper focuses on the critical review of existing FCVS, reports the challenges faced by it and highlights the potential developments to overcome the difficulties.

  • This paper describes experimental studies of impact pressure generated by breaking regular waves in shallow water on a vertical cylinder. Experimental work was carried out in a shallow water flume using a 1:30 - scale model of a vertical rigid circular hollow cylinder with a diameter 0.2 m. This represents a monopile for shallow water offshore wind turbines, subjected to depth induced breaking regular waves of frequencies of 0.8 Hz. The experimental setup included a 1 in 10 sloping bed followed by horizontal bed with a constant 0.8 m water depth. To determine the breaking characteristics, plunging breaking waves were generated. Free surface elevations were recorded at different locations between the wave paddle to the cylinder. Wave impact pressures on the cylinder at a number of elevations along its height were measured under breaking regular waves. The depth-induced wave breaking characteristics, impact pressures, and wave run-up during impact for various cylinder locations are presented and discussed.

  • Basic problem of pile foundation is three dimensional in nature. Three dimensional finite element formulation is employed for the analysis of pile groups. Pile, pile-cap and soil are modeled using 20 node element, whereas interface between pile or pile cap and soil is modeled using 16 node surface element. A parametric study is carried out to consider the effect of pile spacing, number of piles, arrangement of pile and soil modulus on the response of pile group. Results indicate that the response of pile group is dependent on these parameters.

  • In this paper, we show that under certain conditions the Wedderburn decomposition of a finite semisimple group algebra 𝔽qG can be deduced from a subalgebra 𝔽q(G/H) of factor group G/H of G, where H is a normal subgroup of G of prime order P. Here, we assume that q = pr for some prime p and the center of each Wedderburn component of 𝔽qG is the coefficient field 𝔽q.

  • A purely extending module is a generalization of an extending module. In this paper, we study several properties of purely extending modules and introduce the notion of purely essentially Baer modules. A module M is said to be a purely essentially Baer if the right annihilator in M of any left ideal of the endomorphism ring of M is essential in a pure submodule of M. We study some properties of purely essentially Baer modules and characterize von Neumann regular rings in terms of purely essentially Baer modules.
