The faintest quasar luminosity function at z ~ 5 from Deep Learning and Bayesian Inference

  • To estimate the contribution of quasars on keeping the IGM ionized, building a quasar luminosity function (LF) is necessary. Quasar LFs derived from multiple quasar surveys, however, are incompatible, especially for the faint regime, emphasizing the need for deep images. In this study, we construct quasar LF reaching M1450~-21.5 AB magnitude at z ~ 5, which is 1.5 mag deeper than previously reported LFs, using deep images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). We trained an artificial neural network (ANN) by inserting the colors as inputs to classify the quasars at z ~ 5 from the late-type stars and low-redshift galaxies. The accuracy of ANN is > 99 %. We also adopted the Bayesian information criterion to elaborate on the quasar-like objects. As a result, we recovered 5/5 confirmed quasars and remarkably minimized the contamination rate of high-redshift galaxies by up to six times compared to the selection using color selection alone. The constructed quasar parametric LF shows a flatter faint-end slope α=-127+0.16-0.15 similar to the recent LFs. The number of faint quasars (M1450 < -23.5) is too few to be the main contributor to IGM ionizing photons.

  • 말뭉치 분석기는 언어 연구에 필요한 도구로써 망뭉치 분석을 통한 언어 정보의 추출, 적용 및 확인용으로 사용할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 언어 기술을 국부 문법에 의한 그래픽적인 기술방법으로 처리하는 말뭉치 분석기를 이용하여 한국어 텍스트를 연구하기 위하여 기존의 굴절어 중심으로 구현되어진 다국어 말뭉치 분석기에 한국어와 같은 교착어들의 텍스트 처리를 위한 기능을 구현한다.

Development of Design and Field Quality Control Techniques of Shallow Foundation Resting on Intermediate Geomaterials (중간토에 지지된 직접기초의 설계 및 현장품질관리기법 개발)

  • To suggest a modified shallow foundation design method which can be considered the scale effect of foundation on IGM(intermediate geomaterial) soil layer, the weathered soil layer that is uniformly formed up to 8m(2B) with over 50 N-value is selected and 3 times field loading tests are performed on several sized square-shaped shallow foundations with 30, 75, 150, 240 and 400cm in width respectively. Because the soil modulus of elasticity(Es) calculated by soil investigation and 1st field test(PBT) results showed an underestimated tendency, a modified correlation is required for the reasonable estimation of Es on the weathered soil. Also, the N-value was increased with an increasing in depth. However, the N-values around the test foundations showed the different values even though the foundations on the same level because the test site was arranged by excavation. Therefore, the more detail soil investigations are required for the each test foundations respectively. Since Es based on elasticity theory is determined by the stress distribution shape of the foundation and elasticity modulus of the soil, the scale effect considered pressure-settlement curve can be clearly derived from the correlation on stress distribution shape and the variation of soil elasticity modulus with depth. Therefore, the modified correlation will be suggested to estimate a reasonable Es on the weathered soil, and the scale effect considered shallow foundation design method is also developed based on the elastic theory and field tests in this research.

HIGH REDSHIFT QUASAR SURVEY WITH IMS

  • We describe a survey of quasars in the early universe, beyond z ~ 5, which is one of the main science goals of the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS) conducted by the Center for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe (CEOU). We use multi-wavelength archival data from SDSS, CFHTLS, UKIDSS, WISE, and SWIRE, which provide deep images over wide areas suitable for searching for high redshift quasars. In addition, we carried out a J-band imaging survey at the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope with a depth of ~23 AB mag and survey area of ${\sim}120deg^2$, which makes IMS a suitable survey for finding faint, high redshift quasars at z ~ 7. In addition, for the quasar candidates at z ~ 5.5, we are conducting observations with the Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (CQUEAN) on the 2.1m telescope at McDonald Observatory, which has a custom-designed filter set installed to enhance the efficiency of selecting robust quasar candidate samples in this redshift range. We used various color-color diagrams suitable for the specific redshift ranges, which can reduce contaminating sources such as M/L/T dwarfs, low redshift galaxies, and instrumental defects. The high redshift quasars we are confirming can provide us with clues to the growth of supermassive black holes since z ~ 7. By expanding the quasar sample at 5 < z < 7, the final stage of the hydrogen reionization in the intergalactic medium (IGM) can also be fully understood. Moreover, we can make useful constraints on the quasar luminosity function to study the contribution of quasars to the IGM reionization.

  • Robotized MIG welding of large aluminium components for high speed trains is state-of-the-art. The implementation of online laser cameras enables seam tracking and adoptive modification of welding parameters. A constant fill is achieved regardless of the gap tolerances. Friction Stir Welding has been introduced to the market as a reliable and fast joining technology. The advantages of high welding speeds and the elimination of arc light, fumes and liquefaction in the welding spot lead to economical realisation of heavy-duty gantry systems. FSW robots offer a high flexibility with regard to welding of curved parts, and can be equipped with laser cameras for exact joint tracking.

  • Faint z ~ 5 quasars with M1450 ~ -23 mag are known to be the potentially important contributors to the ultraviolet ionizing background in the post-reionization era. However, their number density has not been well determined, making it difficult to assess their role in the early ionization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). In this work, we present the updated results of our z ~ 5 quasar survey using the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), a near-infrared imaging survey covering an area of 85 square degrees. From our spectroscopic observations with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on the Gemini-South 8 m Telescope, we discovered eight new quasars at z ~ 5 with -26.1 ≤ M1450 ≤ -23.3. Combining our IMS faint quasars with the brighter Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars, we derive, for the first time, the z ~ 5 quasar luminosity function (QLF) without any fixed parameters down to the magnitude limit of M1450 = -23 mag. We find that the faint-end slope of the QLF is very flat (-1.2) with a characteristic luminosity of -25.7 mag. The number density of z ~ 5 quasars from the QLF gives lower ionizing emissivity and ionizing photon density than those in previous works. These results imply that quasars are responsible for only 10-20% of the photons required to completely ionize the IGM at z ~ 5, disfavoring the idea that quasars alone could have ionized the IGM at z ~ 5.

Development of an Integrated General Model (IGM) System for Comparison of Genetic Gains from Different Bull Selection Strategies for Korean Brown Cattle (Hanwoo)

  • To advance the effectiveness of the current Hanwoo improvement system, we developed a general simulation that compared a series of breeding schemes under realistic user circumstances. We call this system the Integrated General Model (IGM) and it allows users to control the breeding schemes and selection methods by manipulating the input parameters. The Current Hanwoo Performance and Progeny Test (CHPPT) scheme was simulated with a Modified Hanwoo Performance and Progeny Test (MHPPT) scheme using a Hanwoo Breeding Farm cow population of the Livestock Improvement Main Center (LOMC) of the National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation (NACF). To compare the two schemes, a new method, the Simple Hanwoo Performance Test (SHPT), which uses ultrasound technology for measuring the carcass traits of live animals, was developed. These three models, including the CHPPT, incorporated three types of selection criteria: phenotype (PH), true breeding value (TBV), and estimated breeding value (EBV). The simulation was scheduled to mimic an actual Hanwoo breeding program; thus, the simulation was run to include the years 1983-2020 for each breeding method and was replicated 10 times. The parameters for simulation were derived from the literature. Approximately 642,000 animals were simulated per replication for the CHPPT scheme; 129,000 animals were simulated for the MHPPT scheme and 112,000 animals for the SHPT scheme. Throughout the 38-year simulation, all estimated parameters of each simulated population, regardless of population size, showed results similar to the input parameters. The deviations between input and output values for the parameters in the large populations were statistically acceptable. In this study, we integrated three simulated models, including the CHPPT, in an attempt to achieve the greatest genetic gains within major economic traits including body weight at 12 months of age (BW12), body weight at 24 months of age (BW24), average daily gain from 6 to 12 months (ADG), carcass weight (CWT), carcass longissimus muscle area (CLMA), carcass marbling score (CMS), ultrasound scanned longissimus muscle area (ULMA), and ultrasound scanned marbling score (UMS).

  • 최근 텍스트와 같은 비정형 데이터의 생성 속도가 급격하게 증가함에 따라, 이를 분석하기 위한 기술들의 필요성이 커지고 있다. 텍스트 마이닝은 자연어 처리기술을 사용하여 비정형 텍스트를 정형화하고, 문서에서 가치있는 정보를 획득할 수 있는 기법 중 하나이다. 텍스트 마이닝 기법은 일반적으로 각각의 분서별로 특정 용어의 사용 빈도를 나타내는 문서-용어 빈도행렬을 사용하여 용어의 중요도를 나타내고, 다양한 연구 분야에서 이를 활용하고 있다. 하지만, 문서-용어 빈도 행렬에서 나타내는 용어들의 빈도들은 문서들의 차별성과 그에 따른 용어들의 중요도를 나타내기 어렵기때문에, 용어 가중치를 적용하여 문서가 가지고 있는 특징을 분류하는 방법이 필수적이다. 다양한 용어 가중치를 적용하는 방법들이 개발되어 적용되고 있지만, 환경 분야에서는 용어 가중치 기법 적용에 따른 효율성 평가 연구가 미비한 상황이다. 또한, 환경 이슈 분석의 경우 단순히 문서들에 특징을 파악하고 주어진 문서들을 분류하기보다, 시간적 분포도에 따른 각 문서의 특징을 반영하는 것도 상대적으로 중요하다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 텍스트 마이닝을 이용하여 2015-2020년의 서울지역 환경뉴스 데이터를 사용하여 환경 이슈 분석에 적합한 용어 가중치 기법들을 비교분석하였다. 용어 가중치 기법으로는 TF-IDF (Term frequency-inverse document frquency), BM25, TF-IGM (TF-inverse gravity moment), TF-IDF-ICSDF (TF-IDF-inverse classs space density frequency)를 적용하였다. 본 연구를 통해 환경문서 및 개체 분류에 대한 최적화된 용어 가중치 기법을 제시하고, 서울지역의 환경 이슈와 관련된 핵심어 추출정보를 제공하고자 한다.
