In this paper, a modified PCF (Point Coordination Function) MAC (Medium Access Control) Protocol is proposed to support the multiple direct link communication between STAs (STAtions) in infrastructure mode IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. By the proposed MAC protocol, the direct link communication between STAs, which are located within the communication range of each other, is allowed without the use of AP (Access Point) as a relay. Moreover, when multiple direct data communication between STAs can be simultaneously performed with a sufficiently small interference, multiple simultaneous direct link communication is allowed for the efficient use of radio bandwidth. AP polls STAs to grant the transmission opportunities using the direct link communication by transmitting the polling frames to STAs. An efficient polling method for granting the transmission opportunities to STAs is proposed to reduce the number of the polling frame transmissions and enhance the PCF MAC performance.
IEEE 802.11n supports two frame aggregation schemes, aggregation for MAC service data unit (A-MSDU) and aggregation for MAC protocol data unit (A-MPDU), to improve throughput at the MAC layer. In this paper, we propose a cooperative frame aggregation (CoFA), which can recover erroneous frames in a cooperative manner based on A-MPDU. Specifically, CoFA receive multiple frames from direct and relay paths, and combined multiple frames jointly. Numerical results show that CoFA outperforms direct transmission and relay transmission over diverse channel conditions.

Wireless sensor networks consist of sensor nodes which are expected to be battery-powered and hard to replace or recharge. Thus, reducing the energy consumption of sensor nodes is an important design consideration in wireless sensor networks. For the implementation of energy-efficient MAC protocol, Sensor-MAC based on IEEE 802.11 protocol. In this paper, which has energy efficient scheduling, was proposed. In this paper, we propose Dynamic S-MAC that is dynamically operated by network-traffic states. Dynamic S-MAC protocol improves energy consumption of S-MAC due to change the frame length according to network-traffic states. Using NS-2 Simulation, we compare the performance of Dynamic S-MAC with S-MAC protocol.

A new backoff scheme for infrastructure mode in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs is proposed to improve a performance. Each station generates a unique backoff number using total number of stations, fairness parameter included in beacon frame and an user's ID that is assigned by AP. The station sends a packet after its own backoff number of idle slots, which makes a collision free access among stations within AP's coverage. The proposed method shows better performance in the view of channel utilization and packet delay than an original IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA backoff scheme.

In this paper, IEEE 802.11 MAC layer protocol is modeled by p-persistent CSMA method. And We introduce performance analysis model based on Basic CSMA/CA protocol, CTS/RTS protocol and hidden node effect reflected Basic CSMA/CA Protocol, Which is mathematically assayed by renewal theory. In this throughput, the result shown that Basic CSMA/CA protocol is profitable when the number of active node is smaller, or the length of packet is shorter, and CTS/RTS protocol is lucrative when the number of active node is larger, or the length of packet is longer. Also the result shown that hidden node less affected when the active node has small one, rather than when the active node has larger one.

Recently, a basic access method about IEEE 802.11 MAC layer protocol using IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs is the DCF thatis based on the CSMA/CA. But, cause of IEEE 802.11 MAC layer uses original backoff algorithm (exponential backoff method), when collision occurred, the size of contention windows increases the double size. Also, a time of packet transmission delay increases and efficiency is decreased by original backoff scheme. In this paper, we have analyzed TCP packet transmission time of IEEE 802.11 MAC DCF protocol for wireless LANs a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm. It is considered the transmission time of transmission control protocol (TCP) packet on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rician fading channel. From the results, a proposed enhanced backoff algorithm produces a better performance improvement than an original backoff in wireless LAN environment. Also, in OFDM/quadrature phase shift keying channel (QPSK), we can achieve that the transmission time in wireless channel decreases as the TCP packet size increases and based on the data collected, we can infer the correlation between packet size and the transmission time, allowing for an inference of the optimal packet size in the TCP layer.

VANET(Vehicular Ad-hoc Network), standardization of IEEE 802.11p specification is in process. 802.11 MAC protocol grants all nodes equal opportunity to acquire channel without regard to their bit-rates, making it possible for lower bit-rate nodes to occupy communication channel for a fair amount of time thus keeping the higher bit-rate nodes from acquiring connection channel which downward-equalize the overall network performance. Also with the 802.11p MAC protocol, the probability of collision occurring increases as the number of nodes grow. The proposed algorithm is a new MAC protocol that guarantees nodes with acquired channel a firm priority over other nodes for a fixed amount of time with TXOP concept added to 'packet burst' according to the current transmitting speed. This newly designed algorithm allows the construction of wireless network with enhanced network throughput, decreased probability of collisions as well as providing the means to grant each node a fair chance of acquiring connection according to their channel conditions. The algorithm sets the CW's (Contention Window) width wider than the standard's and modulates the continuous transmitting threshold value depending on channel acquired time, thus improving the overall performance of the network.

This paper presents a transmission power control MAC protocol that allows terminals to vary transmit power level on data frame basis in ad hoc network. Unlike the IEEE 802.11 approach, we do not use the RTS/CTS packets to silence the neighboring nodes. Instead, channel gain and distance information between transmitter and receiver terminal are inserted in the RTS/CTS packets. These informations are used to dynamically bound the transmission power. Simulation results indicate that, compared to the GMAC, the proposed MAC protocol achieves a increase in the average frame delivery ratio and a decrease in the average frame delay.
