A Federation Policy Development Method for Generating Domestic ID Federation (국내 ID 연합 생성을 위한 연합 정책 개발 방안)

  • ID federation provides users various benefits such as employing multiple services with only single authentication and mitigating management burden of service providers that individually preserve account information of users. To keep up with this international trend, efforts for making the domestic ID federation is ongoing to provide users in the domestic research and education community seamless network connectivity and to support tetherless extension of research environment. In this paper, we analyze the foreign ID federation policies and compare them as a underlying work for making the domestic ID federation. Besides, we suggest some contents that should be included in the domestic ID federation policy. To activate the coming domestic ID federation, we need to first have a well-made federation policy. Then, we need to aggressively promote the domestic ID federation, develop various and fascinating services, and build a convenient support system for technology and service.

  • Currently, almost of all the Internet users have as many IDs as the number of sites they have subscribed for, The users should memorize and input every independent ID and password whenever they want to login to the system. Although ID management system is used to solve this problem, 10 and password management will become more complicated in the forthcoming ubiquitous computing environments because so many computers will be interconnected on various kinds of wired and wireless networks, Furthermore, it is not enough to use the existing single Circle of Trust (COT) ID management system for the forthcoming computing environments. To solve this problem, the paper proposes ID federation models in multiple COT domain and implements an ID federation system that can be scaled to mobile computing environment as well as wired computing environment. The proposed ID federation models has been verified to operate with no problem between the systems in different trust domains by doing the ID scaability test.

  • In order to use an Internet service, it is a general procedure that user subscribes to the service and then registers her or his id(identifier). As Internet has been more widely used, however, user has more and more ids than ever before. In this environments, whenever user uses an Internet service, she or he must authenticate to the service provider, which makes her or him inconvenient. As user's data is scattered and unmanaged on various web sites, user privacy has been revealed more often. This paper specifies e-IDMS which ETRI has been developing to solve such problems. e-IDMS is an Internet ID(IDentity) management system based on ID Federation Mechanism e-IDMS provides ID Federation-based facilities such as composite authentication, Internet SSG, ID information management, privacy protection and interactive query. e-IDMS is used in establishing integrated ill management system for public institutions.

  • The study concluded that in order to achieve a single sign-on through the federation ID management method must be used among many other methods so to establish a combined approval service that gives access to education related information provided by the 16 city and provincial offices of education and the KERIS(Korea Education & Research Information Service). The federation ID management method allows the usage of authentication policy and enables transfer of ID information to other institutions through standardized processing. Therefore by establishing single sign-on through the federation ID management method allows individual city and provincial office of education to maintain the already existing approval services while combining user identification database.

  • While the current world wide network offers an incredibly rich base of information, it causes network management problem because users should have many independent IDs and passwords for accessing different sewers located in many places. In order to solve this problem users have employed single circle of trust(COT) ID management system, but it is still not sufficient for clearing the problem because the coming ubiquitous network computing environment will be integrated and complex networks combined with wired and wireless network devices. The purpose of this paper is to describe the employment and evaluation of federated ID interoperability method for solving the problem. The use of the proposed model can be a solution for solving network management problem in the age of mobile computing environment as well as wired network computing environment.

  • Federated authentication (FA) is a multi-domain authentication and authorization infrastructure that enables users to access nationwide R&D resources with their home-organizational accounts. An FA-enabled user is redirected to his/her home organization, after selecting the home from an identity-provider (IdP) discovery service, to log in. The discovery service allows a user to search his/her home from all FA-enabled organizations. Users get troubles to find their home as federation size increases. Therefore, a discovery service has to provide an intuitive way to make a fast IdP selection. In this paper, we propose a discovery system which leverages geographical information. The proposed system calculates geographical proximity and text similarity between a user and organizations, which determines the order of organizations shown on the system. We also introduce a server redundancy and a status monitoring method for non-stop service provision and improved federation management. Finally, we deployed the proposed system in a real service environment and verified the feasibility of the system.

  • Until today, the personal information of subjects has been centralized in many companies or institutions. However, in recent days, the paradigm has gradually changed in the direction that subjects control their personal information and persue their self-sovereignty. Globally, individual data sovereignty is strengthened by the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR) and the US California Consumer Privacy Act(CCPA). In Korea, a few alliances consist of various companies are creating technology research and service application cases for decentralized ID service model. In this paper, the current decentralized ID service model and its limitations are studied, and a improved decentralized ID service model that can solve them is proposed. The proposed model has a function of securely storing decentralized ID to the third party and a linkage function that can be interoperated even if different decentralized ID services are generated. In addition, a more secure and convenient model by identifying the security threats of the proposed model and deriving the security requirements, is proposed. It is expected that the decentralized ID technology will be applied not only to the proof of people but also to the device ID authentication management of the IoT in the future.

  • This paper introduces an online collaboration infrastructure in order to build a nationwide collaboration ecosystem in research and education areas. The proposed infrastructure involves domestic research institutes, education institutions and related commercial service vendors. It also includes various systems and services which can promote their online collaboration. Especially it provides the user authentication framework based on identity federation which facilitates the share of various ICT resources across different organizations, thereby enabling the efficient R&D collaboration. We deploy and validate the user authentication framework of the infrastructure on KREONET.

  • This paper introduces technical methods to improve the accessibility and usability of a WebRTC video conference (VC) application. Simplified login is essential, by applying such as single sign-on (SSO) to improve the accessibility of VC applications. High usability and manageability are also necessary to attract more users, enhance user experiences, and save service management cost. The proposed VC application leverages SAML-based federated identity management (FIM) to enable higher service accessibility. Users can access the application with their organizational ID and SSO authentication. The FIM eases user ID management and indirectly strengthens privacy information protection. Proposed web application has high usability and manageability because users and/or administrators can easily create, join, monitor, or tear down VC sessions through RESTful web service (REST API). We verify the feasibility of the VC application after illustrating the SAML-based identity federation and the designed REST API.

Real-Time User Login Account Access Management Using Mobile App (모바일 앱을 이용한 실시간 사용자 계정 접근 관리)

  • Spill of personal information using a stolen ID and password that recently occurred in large enterprises and portal web site such as Nate, Auction, National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, suggesting the importance of protecting personal information. By managing access to user accounts in real time, users will be able to block access before personal information is leaked. Therefore, In this paper, we propose a method to prevent spill of personal information that may occur when connected to others by using an authorized ID and password from portals. Specifically, we offer a mobile status control app that controls the logged status of user account in real time to view login status information to user by visualization and information about specific time and IP address. Also, we propose a method for detecting and blocking duplicated login that connect via IP address change.
