  • In structures excavated in rock mass, load progressively increases to a level and remains constant during the construction. Rocks display different elastic properties such as Ei and ʋ under different loading conditions and this requires to use the true values of elastic properties for the design of safe structures in rock. Also, rocks will undergo horizontal and vertical deformations depending on the amount of load applied. However, under constant loads, values of Ei and ʋ will vary in time and induce variations in the behavior of the rock mass. In some empirical equations in which deformation modulus of the rock mass is taken into consideration, elastic parameters of intact rock become functions in the equation. Hence, the use of time dependent elastic properties determined under constant loading will yield more reliable results than when only constant elastic properties are used. As well known, rock material will play an important role in the deformation mechanism since the discontinuities will be closed due to the load. In this study, Ei and ʋ values of intact rocks were investigated under different constant loads for certain rocks with high deformation capabilities. The results indicated significant time dependent variations in elastic properties under constant loading conditions. Ei value obtained from deformability test was found to be higher than the Ei value obtained from the constant loading test. This implies that when static values of elastic properties are used, the material is defined as more elastic than the rock material itself. In fact, Ei and ʋ values embedded in empirical equations are not static. Hence, this workattempts to emerge a new understanding in designing of safer structures in rock mass by numerical methods. The use of time-dependent values of Ei and ʋ under different constant loads will yield more accurate results in numerical modeling analysis.

  • A number of different methods have been used for modeling the sorption of volatile organic chlorinated compounds such as tetrachloroethylene/perchloroethylene (PCE). In this study, PCE was adsorbed in several natural sorbents, i.e., Pahokee peat, vermicompost, BionSoil®, and natural soil, in the batch experiments. Several sorption models such as linear, Freundlich, solubility-normalized Freundlich model, and Polanyi-Manes model (PMM) were used to analyze sorption isotherms. The relationship between sorption model parameters, organic carbon content (foc), and elemental C/N ratio was studied. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficient values (log Koc = 1.50-3.13) in four different sorbents were less than the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow = 3.40) of PCE due to high organic carbon contents. The log Koc decreased linearly with log foc and log C/N ratio, but increased linearly with log O/C, log H/C, and log (N+O)/C ratio. Both log KF,oc or log KF,oc decreased linearly with log foc (R2 = 0.88-0.92) and log C/N ratio (R2 = 0.57-0.76), but increased linearly with log (N+O)/C (R2 = 0.93-0.95). The log qmax,oc decreased linearly as log foc and log C/N increased, whereas it increased with log O/C, log H/C and log (N+O)/C ratios. The log qmax,oc increased linearly with (N+O)/C indicating a strong dependence of qmax,oc on the polarity index. The results showed that PCE sorption behaviors were strongly correlated with the physicochemical properties of soil organic matter (SOM).

  • To establish area specific control strategy for ambient ozone in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), the maximum ozone concentration in each local government district in the SMA were estimated by using the OZone Isopleth Plotting Package for Research (OZIPR) model. The modeling period was June 2000 and the emission inventory data used were from National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER). Except the islands of Incheon, whole Seoul and Incheon areas were volatile organic compounds (VOCs) limited, i.e., decreasing the oxides of nitrogen ($NO_X$) emission alone may increase the maximum ozone concentration upto certain point. In Gyeonggi, 12 areas were VOCs limited while 12 areas were in between VOCs limited and $NO_X$ limited, i.e., decreasing both $NO_X$ and VOCs emission may decrease the maximum ozone concentration. Majority of the estimated ozone values were lower than the measured values. The reason could be inaccuracy in emission inventories and/or transport from other areas. The same calculation was carried out for June 2004 and it was found that Seoul was still in the VOCs limited condition.

  • This paper analyzes La Rumorosa I Wind Farm's wind states and their characteristics in the operation of two wind turbines over the course of one year of records. This information identifies the impact of wind states on wind power output. The study used the Gaussian Mixture Model to classify the occurrence and frequency of the dominant wind states in the generation of energy from the turbines. Results were obtained for mesoscale wind states and local scale wind states, such as cold fronts and Santa Ana winds, as well as daytime, nighttime and hot days, respectively, which were statistically analyzed to determine their relationship to power output by generating power and power coefficient curves. Between the cut-in speed and the rated speed of the wind turbines, cold fronts show higher efficiency, unlike nighttime wind states, which are the most efficient past the rated speed. In addition, cold fronts are also those that occur to the greatest extent, contributing 31.26% of the energy produced per year, compared with the Santa Ana winds, which occur to a lesser extent; however, they contribute 22.11% of the energy produced per year.

  • This paper applies the FE analysis procedure, developed in the Part I of the companion article, to the three-dimensional rubber pad deformation during rubber-pad forming process. Effects of different algorithms corresponding to incompressibility constraint and time integration methods on numerical solution responses are investigated. Laboratory scale experiments support the validity of the developed FE procedure an demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical models. Full scale model responses are also predicted using the reasonable method and parameters obtained in laboratory modeling.

  • In this paper, the Multi-FNNs(Fuzzy-Neural Networks) architecture is identified and optimized using HCM(Hard C-Means) clustering method and genetic algorithms. The proposed Multi-FNNs architecture uses simplified inference and linear inference as fuzzy inference method and error back propagation algorithm as learning rules. Here, HCM clustering method, which is carried out for the process data preprocessing of system modeling, is utilized to determine the structure of Multi-FNNs according to the divisions of input-output space using I/O process data. Also, the parameters of Multi-FNNs model such as apexes of membership function, learning rates and momentum coefficients are adjusted using genetic algorithms. An aggregate performance index with a weighting factor is used to achieve a sound balance between approximation and generalization abilities of the model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model we use the time series data for gas furnace and the NOx emission process data of gas turbine power plant.

  • Q-learning is a recent reinforcement learning algorithm that does not need a modeling of environment and it is a suitable approach to learn behaviors for autonomous agents. But when it is applied to multi-agent learning with many I/O states, it is usually too complex and slow. To overcome this problem in the multi-agent learning system, we propose the successive Q-learning algorithm. Successive Q-learning algorithm divides state-action pairs, which agents can have, into several Q-functions, so it can reduce complexity and calculation amounts. This algorithm is suitable for multi-agent learning in a dynamically changing environment. The proposed successive Q-learning algorithm is applied to the prey-predator problem with the one-prey and two-predators, and its effectiveness is verified from the efficient avoidance ability of the prey agent.
