Inverse analysis of non-linear reinforced concrete bridge pier using recursive Gaussian filtering for in-situ condition assessment is the main theme of this work. For this purpose, minimum variance unbiased estimation using unscented sigma points is adopted here. The uniqueness of this inverse analysis lies in its approach for strain based updating of engineering demand parameters, where appropriate bound and constrained conditions are introduced to ensure numerical stability and convergence. In this analysis, seismic input is also identified, which is an added advantage for the structures having no dedicated sensors for earthquake measurement. First, the proposed strategy is tested with a simulated example whose hysteretic properties are obtained from the slow-cyclic test of a frame to investigate its efficiency and accuracy. Finally, the experimental test data of a full-scale bridge pier is used to study its in-situ condition in terms of Park & Ang damage index. Overall the study shows the ability of the augmented minimum variance unbiased estimation based recursive time-marching algorithm for non-linear system identification with the aim to estimate the engineering damage parameters that are the fundamental information necessary for any future decision making for retrofitting/rehabilitation.

A micro positioning system using piezoelectric actuators have very wide application region such as ultra-precision machine tool, optical device, measurement systen. In order ro keep a high precision displacement resolution, they use a position sensor and feedback the error. From the practical point of view, a high-resolution displacement sensor system are very expensive and difficult to guarantee such sensitive sensors work properly in the hard opera- tion environment of industry. In this study, a micro-positioning grinding table which does not require position sensor but uses piezoelectric voltage feedback, has been developed. It is driven by hystersis-considering reference input voltage which calculated from computer and then uses actuator/sensor characteristics of piezoelectric materials. From the result of experiments we proved a fast and stable response of micro-positioning system and suggested efficient technique to control the piezoelectric actuator. And through grinding experiments, it is revealed that a characteristics of ground surfaces transient to plastic deformation as extremely small depth of grinding.
A new, automated apparatus is proposed for calculating the Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC), representing a simple and easily applied testing device for continuous measurements of the volumetric water content and suction of unsaturated soils. The use of this apparatus helps to avoid the errors that arise when performing experiments. Consequently, the apparatus provides greater accuracy in calculating the SWCC of unsaturated soils. The apparatus is composed of a pressure panel, flow cell, water reservoir, air bubble trap, balance, sample-preparation accessories, and measurement system, among other components. The air pressure can attain 300 kPa, and a general test can be completed in a short time. The apparatus can simply control the drying process and wetting process. The changes in volumetric water content that occur during the drying and wetting processes are shown directly in the SWRC program, in real time. As a case study, we performed an SWCC test of Joomunjin sand (75% relative density) to measure matric suction and volumetric water content during both the drying and wetting processes. The test revealed hysteresis behavior, whereby the water content on the wetting curve is always lower than that on the drying curve for a specific matric suction, during the wetting and drying processes. Based on the test results, SWCCs were estimated using the Brooks and Corey, van Genuchten, and Fredlund and Xing models. The van Genuchten model performed best for the given soil conditions, as it yielded the highest coefficient of determination.
In the last decades, the decrease in biological or chemical availability of sorbed contaminants as contact time passed, is generally accepted. This phenomenon so called as "aging" or "sequestration" is known to directly affect risk of the contaminats. This was observed for mainly for hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), but also reported for heavy metals. Aging is known to be directly related to sorption-desorption hysteresis, irreversible sorption, desorption-resistance, nonequilibrium sorption, etc. The decrease in bioavailability due to aging or sequestration indicates realistic decrease in risk potential. Recently a risk-based management concept by scientific evidences but not the simple measurement of contaminant concentration has been attempted to determine environmentally acceptable remedial endpoint. This is because selection of remedial endpoint based on not total concentration but the bioavailability and toxicity of contaminants can reduce both the treatment cost and remedial activities of the contaminated sites. The bioavailability and toxicity of the residual contaminants are highly affected by the fate and transport and also directly affect the exposure pathways and bioaccumulation of contaminants in the living biota. In this paper, scientific feasibility on the risk-based clean-up and management of contaminated sites is reviewed.

Graphene is a carbon based material and it has great potential of being utilized in various fields such as electronics, optics, and mechanics. In order to develop graphene-based logic systems, graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) has been extensively explored. GFET requires supporting devices, such as volatile memory, to function in an embedded logic system. As far as we understand, graphene has not been studied for volatile memory application, although several graphene non-volatile memories (GNVMs) have been reported. However, we think that these GNVM are unable to serve the logic system properly due to the very slow program/read speed. In this study, a GVM based on the GFET structure and using an engineered graphene channel is proposed. By manipulating the deposition condition, charge traps are introduced to graphene channel, which store charges temporarily, so as to enable volatile data storage for GFET. The proposed GVM shows satisfying performance in fast program/erase (P/E) and read speed. Moreover, this GVM has good compatibility with GFET in device fabrication process. This GVM can be designed to be dynamic random access memory (DRAM) in serving the logic systems application. We demonstrated GVM with the structure of FET. By manipulating the graphene synthesis process, we could engineer the charge trap density of graphene layer. In the range that our measurement system can support, we achieved a high performance of GVM in refresh (>10 ${\mu}s$) and retention time (~100 s). Because of high speed, when compared with other graphene based memory devices, GVM proposed in this study can be a strong contender for future electrical system applications.

In this study, we propose a signal processing algorithm to measure the arousal level of a human subject using a PPG(Photoplethysmography) sensor. From the measured PPG signals, the arousal level is determined by PPI(Pulse to Pulse Interval) and discrete-time signal processing. We ran psychophysical experiments displaying visual stimuli on TV display while measuring PPG signal from a finger, where the nature landscape scenes were used for restorative effect, and the urban environments were used to stimulate the stress. However, the measured PPG signals may include noise due to subject movement and measurement error, which results in incorrect detections. In this paper, to mitigate the noise impact on stimulus detection, we propose a detecting algorithm using digital signal processing methods and statistics of measured signals. A filter is adopted to remove a high frequency noise and adaptively designed taking into account the statistics of the measured PPG signals. Moreover we employ a hysteresis method to reduce the distortion of PPI in decision of emotional. Via experiment, we show that the proposed scheme reduces signal noise and improves stimulus detection.

Thin film $LiNbO_3$MFS (metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor) capacitor showed improved characteristics such as low interface trap density, low interaction with Si substrate, and large remanent polarization. This paper reports ferroelectric $LiNbO_3$thin films grown directly on p-type Si (100) substrates by 13.56 MHz RF magnetron sputtering system for FRAM (ferroelectric random access memory) applications. RTA (rapid thermal anneal) treatment was performed for as-deposited films in an oxygen atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ for 60sec. We learned from X-ray diffraction that the RTA treated films were changed from amorphous to poly-crystalline $LiNbO_3$which exhibited (012), (015), (022), and (023) plane. Low temperature film growth and post RTA treatments improved the leakage current of $LiNbO_3$films while keeping other properties almost as same as high substrate temperature grown samples. The leakage current density of $LiNbO_3$films decreased from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-7}$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ after RTA treatment. Breakdown electric field of the films exhibited higher than 500 kV/cm. C-V curves showed the clockwise hysteresis which represents ferroelectric switching characteristics. Calculated dielectric constant of thin film $LiNbO_3$illustrated as high as 27.9. From ferroelectric measurement, the remanent polarization and coercive field were achieved as 1.37 $\muC/\textrm{cm}^2$ and 170 kV/cm, respectively.

$K_2CoCl_4$, single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method in Ar atmosphere. The thermal hysteresis of the dielectric constant at $T_c$ was investigated. $K_2CoCl_4$ crystal shows ionic hopping mechanism due to $K^+$ ion and the activation energy is nearly 0.62 eV. Thermal expansions along a-, b-, and c-axis of $K_2CoCl_4$, were measured on heating and the thermal expansion coefficients in each phase were calculated. From the result of the optical absorption measurement, we interpreted the absorption peak as transition energy between the splitted energy levels of the Co ion in the crystal field and it showed the possibility of the application to the optical band filter between 800 nm and 1200 nm.
$BiFeO_3$ (BFO) thin films were prepared on $Pt/TiO_2/Si$ substrate by r.f. magnetron sputtering. The effects of deposition pressure on electrical properties were investigated using measurement of dielectric properties, leakage current and polarization. When BFO targets were prepared, Fe atoms were substituted with Mn 0.05% to increase electrical resistivity of films. (Fe+Mn)/Bi ratio of BFO thin films increases with increasing partial pressure of $O_2$ gas. The deposited films showed the only BFO phase at 10 mTorr, the coexistence of BFO and $Bi_2O_3$ phase at 30-50 mTorr, and the only $Bi_2O_3$ phase at 70 mTorr. The crystallinity of BFO films was reduced due to the higher Bi contents and the decrease of surface mobility of atoms at high temperature. The porosity and surface roughness of films increased with the increase of the deposition pressure. The films deposited at high pressure showed low dielectric constant and high leakage current. The dielectric constant of films deposited at various deposition pressures was 84${\sim}$153 at 1 kHz. The leakage current density of the films deposited at 10${\sim}$70 mTorr was about $7{\times}10.6{\sim}1.5{\times}10.2A/cm^2$ at 100 kV/cm. The leakage current was found to be closely related to the morphology and composition of the BFO films. BFO films showed poor P-E hysteresis loops due to high leakage current.

The integrity of the turbine rotors can be assessed by the coercive force and Vickers hardness of the aged rotors at service temperature. The coercive force measurement system was constructed in order to evaluate material degradation nondestructively. The test specimen was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel used widely for turbine rotor material, and then the seven kinds of specimens with different degradation levels were prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. The coercive force of the test materials was measured at room temperature. Vickers hardness and coercive force decreased with the increase of degradation. The relationship between Vickers hardness and coercive force was investigated. The degradation of test material may be determined nondestructively by the relationship between Vickers hardness and coercive force.
