Semi-active suspension systems are greatly expected to be in the mainstream of future controlled suspensions fur passenger cars. In this study, a continuous variable damper for a passenger car suspension is developed. It is controlled actively and exhibits high performance with light weight, low cost, and low energy consumption. To get fast response of the damper, reverse damping mechanism is adapted, and to get small pressure change rate after blow-off, a pilot controlled proportional valve is designed and analyzed. The reverse continuous variable damper is designed as a HS-SH damper which offers good body control with reduced transferred input force from tire, compared with any other type of suspension system. The damper structure is designed, so that rebound and compression damping force can be tuned independently, of which variable valve is placed externally. The rate of pressure change with respect to the flow rate after blow-offbecomes smooth when the fixed orifice size increases. Damping forces are measured with the change of the solenoid current at the different piston velocities to confirm the maximum hysteresis of 20N, linearity, and variance of damping farce. The damping farce variance is wide and continuous, and is controlled by the spoof opening, of which scheme is usually adapted in proportional valves. The reverse continuous variable damper developed in this study is expected to be utilized in the semi-active suspension systems in passenger cars after its performance and simplicity of the design is confirmed through real car test.
Concentrically braced frames (CBFs) possess high stiffness and strength against lateral loads; however, they suffer from low energy absorption capacity against seismic loads due to the susceptibility of CBF diagonal elements to bucking under compression loading. To address this problem, in this study, an innovative damper was proposed and investigated experimentally and numerically. The proposed damper comprises main plates and includes a flange plate angled at θ and a trapezius-shaped web plate surrounded by the plate at the top and bottom sections. To investigate the damper behaviour, dampers with θ = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° were evaluated with different flange plate thicknesses of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm. Dampers with θ = 0° and 90° create rectangular-shaped and I-shaped shear links, respectively. The results indicate that the damper with θ = 30° exhibits better performance in terms of ultimate strength, stiffness, overstrength, and distribution stress over the damper as compared to dampers with other angles. The hysteresis curves of the dampers confirm that the proposed damper acts as a ductile fuse. Furthermore, the web and flange plates contribute to the shear resistance, with the flange carrying approximately 80% and 10% of the shear force for dampers with θ = 30° and 90°, respectively. Moreover, dampers that have a larger flange-plate shear strength than the shear strength of the web exhibit behaviours in linear and nonlinear zones. In addition, the over-strength obtained for the damper was greater than 1.5 (proposed by AISC for shear links). Relevant relationships are determined to predict and design the damper and the elements outside it.
In this study, the effectiveness of a multi-action hybrid damper (MHD) composed of lead rubber bearing (LRB) and friction pad was verified in terms of seismic performance improvement of a frame structure. The LRB and the friction elements are connected in series, so the LRB governs the intial small deformation and the friction determines large deformation behavior. Cyclic loading tests were conducted by using a half scale steel frame structure with the MHD, and the results indicated that the structure became to have the stable trilinear hysteresis with large initial stiffness and first yielding due to the LRB, and the second yielding due to the friction. The MHD could significantly increase the energy dissipation capacity of the structure and the hysteresis curves obtained by tests were almost identical to the analytically estimated ones.
The clutch with torsional damper is installed on a passenger car with manual transmission, which not only transmits the power generated by engine to the transmission but also absorbs the shock and vibration from the engine. The torsional damper in the clutch dissipates the torsional vibration energy and eliminates the resonance in the driveline but high damping in the damper causes the increase of the vibration level which is against the comfort and durability. In this study, a dynamic model for the passenger car driveline with manual transmission was developed to investigate the vibration and the effects of characteristics of the driveline. With the dynamic model, the vibration characteristics of driveline were examined by the mode analysis and driving simulation, and the effects of hysteresis torque and spring constant were investigated. The vehicle tests with prototype torsional dampers were preformed and the test results showed good agreements with the simulation.

In near-fault earthquake prone areas, the velocity pulse-like seismic waves often results in excessive horizontal displacement for structures, which may result in severe structural failure during large or near-fault earthquakes. The recently developed isolator-gap damper (IGD) systems provide a solution for the large horizontal displacement of long period base-isolated structures. However, the hysteresis characteristics of the IGD system are significantly different from the traditional hysteretic behavior. At present, the hysteretic behavior is difficult to be reflected in the structural analysis and performance evaluation especially under random earthquake excitations for lacking of effective analysis models which prevent the application of this kind of IGD system. In this paper, we propose a mathematical hysteretic model for the IGD system that presents its nonlinear hysteretic characteristics. The equivalent linearization is conducted on this nonlinear model, which requires the variances of the IGD responses. The covariance matrix for the responses of the structure and the IGD system is obtained for random earthquake excitations represented by the Kanai-Tajimi spectrum by solving the Lyapunov equation. The responses obtained by the equivalent linearization are verified in comparison with the nonlinear responses by the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) analysis for random earthquake excitations.
In this study, an incremental loading test of the HRS(Hybrid Rubber Slit) damper was additionally performed to define the physical characteristics according to the incremental test results, and an analytical study was performed according to the damping design procedure by selecting an example structure. As a result of performing seismic performance evaluation before reinforcement by selecting a RC structure similar to an actual school structure as an example structure, the story drift ratio was satisfied, but some column members collapsed due to bending deformation. In order to secure the seismic performance, the damping design procedure of the HRS damper was presented and performed. As a result of calculating the amount of damping device according to the expected damping ratio and applying it to the example structure, the hysteresis behavior was stable without decrease in strength, and the story drift ratio and the shear force were reduced according to the damping effect. Finally the column members that had collapsed before reinforcement satisfied the LS Level.
Data acquisition system and computer program developed in this study could be well used in engine vibration analysis. The system and program developed were also operated to be able to control measuring interval, number of channels, number of data. The flywheel was specially studied to provide the proper weight with rubber damper for the engine design at low level of vibration. This study was conducted to obtain basic data which affect the engine vibration. The experiment of this study was performed on original weight flywheel, weight-reduced flywheel, weight-reduced and rubber-coated flywheel, weight-reduced and damper-attached flywheel. Avarage of peak value, maximum vibration, power spectrum density based on FFT analysis are major factors of this experiment. Results were obtained as follows : 1. When rubber was inserted in the flywheel rim of which weight was reduced from 32.2kgf to 24.4 kgf, maximum vibration of the engine was decreased 48.3% at X axis, 35.5% at Y axis and 34.6% at Z axis in comparison with the flywheel of original weight. 2. When the flywheel of rubber damper was compared with the original flywheel, the average of absolute vibration for rubber damped flywheel was decreased at X, Y, Z axis and especially its decreasing rate was so high at X-axis comparing with the other flywheel, which implied that rubber damper was very useful to reducing the vibration of the engine at X axis. 3. Hysteresis losses of X, Y, Z axis were greatly decreased in the flywheel with rubber damper on rim. 4. Damped oscillation effect on X and Y axis vibration above average peak vibration by the flywheel of rubber damper on rim was larger than those by the other flywheels. 5. Power spectrums of vibration at real and imaginery part were bi-mode type. The vibration frequency of rubber dampered flywheel which weight is decreased was slightly increased as compared with original flywheel.

This paper presents the dynamic behavior of stay cable with Lead-Shear damper( LSD) near the support. This kind of research about the dynamic behavior of LSD is essential to design LSD in order to mitigate the ambient vibration of stay cable. The hysteresis curve of LSD was assumed to be perfect elasto-plastic behavior based on the real hysteretic behavior of such lead-based dampers. Mechanical model of LSD was equivalent Kelvin model and sag effect of stay cable was considered. Yielding force (also referred as size) of LSD was selected as a design parameter. Effects of tension of stay cable and installation point of LSD were studied. It was found that optimal size of LSD exists for each case of stay cable.
