  • Five hypotrichs inhabiting the representative aquatic and terrestrial habitats of Chindo Island, Strongylidium muscorum, Gonostomum affine, Histriculus cavicola, H. muscorum, Steinia quadrinucleata are discovered from Chindo Island. Of these, two species, Strongylidium muscorum Kahl, 1932 and Steinia quadrinucleata Dragesco and Njine, 1971 are newly recorded from Korea.

  • The morphology and ecology of the marine hypotrichous ciliate, Oxytricha saltans (Cohn, 1866) Kahl, 1932 collected from shrimp culturing pond of Qingdao (Tsingtao, 36$^{\circ}$08'N : 120$^{\circ}$43'E) , P.R. China were investigated. collected samples were observed directly and we also observed cultured ones and stained specimens. In relation to this species were described the morphology and infraciliature in detail using protargol method, presented a new diagnosis and discussed some synonyms and the related species, Actinotricha saltans sensu Dragesco, 1963.

  • Some hypotrichous ciliates collected from the Han River and the Mountain Kwank were cultured at laboratory. They were identified as Paruroleptus lepisma Wenzel, 1953 and Euplotes aediculatus Pierson, 1943. These two species are reported for the first from Korea. Morphological and biometrical studies of them were carried out by observing both wild and cultured cells and the infraciliature of silver stained specimens. The two speices were redesribed and analyzed biometrically for their taxonomic characters.

Of these, two species of eonostomum affine (Stein, 1859) and fupfotes muscicofc Kahl, 1932 are newly recorded from Korea. The total seven species are listed and two newly recorded species from Korea are redescribed with illustrations.

  • The euplotid hypotrich collected from a puddle, Jeju-do in 2002 and cultured in the laboratory was identified as Euplotes muscorum Dragesco, 1970. The species is reported for the first time from Korea. The description was based on the observation of living specimens, protargol impregnation and biometrical analysis. This species is characterized by following diagnosis: 63-78 ${\mu}m$ in length, 40-52 ${\mu}m$ in width in vivo, 9 frontoventral cirri, 5 transverse cirri,4 caudal cirri, 1 micro- and macronucleus, adoral zone of membranelles with 32-36 adoral membranelles covering approximately 2/3 of body length, 8 dorsal kineties, mid-dorsal kinety with 20-24 cilia 3nd dargyrome complex type. This species with 9 frontoventral cirrotype is very similar to E. muscicola Kahl, 1932. The differences between these two species are: E. muscorum has 8 dorsal kineties and complex dargyrome type, while E. muscicola 9 dorsal kineties and multiple dargyrome type.

  • Two hypotrichous ciliates inhabiting the representative terrestrial habitats of Jindo Island, Holostichides chardezi Foissner, 1987 and Rigidocortex octonucleatus (Foissner, 1988) are found from Jindo Island. These two species are newly recorded from Korea. The description was based on the observation of living specimens, protargol impregnated specimens and biometric analysis. The morphological variations among the populations of these species were investigated with morphometry. The diagnostic characteristics of these species are as follows: Holostichides chardezi : elongate body flexible and twisted, yellowish subpellicular granules scattered entire cortex, adoral zone of membranelles covering about $28\%$ of body length, left and right rows of mid-ventral cirri paired, left row ended at buccal vertex and right row extending to center of body, no transverse cirri, both marginal rows of cirri not confluent at posterior end, 28-42 macronuclei and 1-5 micronuclei scattered entire body. 3 caudal cirri and 4 dorsal kineties. Rigidocortex octonucleatues: elongate-oval body rigid and not contractile, yellowish cytoplasmic crystals and fat globules densely packed, adoral zone of membranelles covering about $40\%$ of body length, 5 transverse cirri, both marginal rows of cirri not confluent at posterior end, 8 macronuclei longitudinally arranged in median of cell, 3 caudal cirri and 7-10 fragmented dorsal kineties.
