  • The growth, yield and quality of Sedum sarmentosum between soil and hydroponic cultivation were compared to produce high-quality shoots in summer season. The plants were collected from four places in Korea and cultivated in a plastic film house with 50% shading. A 1:1:1 mixtures of sand, upland soil and substrate (N-P-K: 330-220-400 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) was used for soil cultivation, and a nutrient film technique (NFT) with Yamazaki-lettuce nutrient solution used for hydroponics. After 30 days of cultivation, plant height ranged from 18.4 to 21.8 cm and showed no significant difference between soil and hydroponic cultivation. Number of shoot, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaf, fresh weight, and dry weight significantly increased in hydroponics compared to those in soil cultivation. Fresh and dry weights in hydroponics were greater in 'Gunsan' and 'Wando' collections than those in other collections. Stem diameter and compression-force significantly increased in soil cultivation rather than hydroponics with significant differences among collections. However there were no significant differences in shoot bitterness and vitamin C content between cultivation methods or among the collections. Most mineral contents except Fe in hydroponics were higher than those in soil cultivation. K, Na, Zn contents in hydroponics were over 2 times higher than those in soil cultivation.

  • The importance of plant factory which blend agriculture and manufacture has been discussed widely. This company has researched hydroponics technique for cultivation which has been mainly developed in the sites of Okinawa and Hyougo Prefecture. In 1987, we stopped the previous research there, and started a new one far plant factory at the Agricultural Research Center of Chiba Prefecture. In 1989, we built four experimental plant factories (120㎡) at Chiba Oil Factory Refinery in Ichihara-city, developing techniques of cultivation, equipment production and environmental control for cultivation system of tomato, strawberry and leaf vegetables. • Effect of potassium phosphonate on control of potato basal stem rot caused by Pythium myriotylum in hydroponics system was evaluated at spring and fall cultivation in Jeju island in 2001. Potassium phosphonate 200 ppm treatment, which was directly supplemented into the nutrient solution, showed 90.5%, and 100 ppm treatment showed 50.5% control value in spring cultivation. Fall cultivation, potassium phosphonate 200 ppm treatment showed 100%, and 100 ppm treatment showed 69.9% control value. Potassium phosphonate 200 ppm treatment, basal stem rot of potato started to develop 10 days ofter inoculation into the hydroponics system showed 8.0% in infection rate. Potassium phosphonate 100 ppm treatment, after 5 days showed 10.0%, and after 10 days showed 20.0% infection rate, but the non-treated was after 5 days showed 56.7%, and after 10 days showed 96.9% infection rate.

  • In this paper, a closed hydroponics device was designed and fabricated to grow and harvest plants in a small space for safe consumption, which enables horticultural activities that are difficult to perform due to space constraints from urbanization. This device also aimed to minimize the air pollution of crops. To obtain data for the optimal growth conditions for crops in this intelligent plant-growing system, sensors were used to measure and control the growth conditions. To investigate the optimal growth conditions, blue lettuce and crown daisy were selected as representative crops. The growth rates were comparatively analyzed through four experiments for each plant. This hydroponics device was used to collect data on growth rates that are altered depending on cultivation conditions, which can then be used to study methods to control the growth rate of crops.

  • Optimmum cultivation period was determined for producing seed bulb of Korean native Allium wakegi Araki in vitro in hydroponic culture. The growth gradually increased during cultivation period. In general, plants grown for 5 months produced significantly the highest bulb number and bulb fresh weight per plant. Raising the cultivation period from 1 to 5 months remarkably increased seed bulb yield.

  • The research was aimed to improve pre-harvest methods to maintain marketability in postharvest leaf lettuce. In this study, the effect of hydroponics on the growth and post-harvest storage characteristics of 'Chongchima' lettuce grown in peat mass medium hydroponic system using a non-powered culture device or deep water culture (DWC) was evaluated. There was no difference in fresh weight, leaf number, SPAD, moisture content, and C/N ratio between peat moss growing medium hydroponic and DWC methods except plant height. It was found that lettuce cultivation by a nonpowered hydroponics method is easier than the existing DWC. The quality parameters, such as fresh weight loss, SPAD value, and general appearance of lettuce were investigated after harvest. There was no significant difference in fresh weight loss and general appearance during storage of lettuce by the hydroponics methods. However, with the increased storage time of SPAD, which is related to chlorophyll content, was slightly higher in peat moss medium hydroponic was than DWC. When crops such as lettuce are grown under favorable conditions without any agronomic abnormalities, it is suggested that post-harvest storage is not significantly affected by peat moss growing medium hydroponic and DWC.

  • This study was carried out to establish the hydroponics production method for year-round cultivation of yam and to establish the mass production system of disease-free seed tubers from the superior yam species through water culture. There were no difference in tuber weight between 9 hr photoperiod(640mg) and natural photoperiod(600mg). However, longer photoperiod such as 12hr and 15hr decreased tuber weight to 490 and 500g, respectively, indicating that long photoperiod effects adversely tuber enlargement. Dioscorea opposita which was grown with hydroponics effected markedly tuber enlargement at 50% nutrient of Sanyak's standard solution. Hormone treatment of NAA 100ppm resulted in the best tuber growth(560mg) while control showed a relatively lower tuber growth(350mg).

  • This study was conducted to investigated the changes in the nutrient components ($NO_3{^-}-N$, $NH_4{^+}-N$, $PO_4{^{3-}}P$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$) and environmental parameters (electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and pH) on the leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown with hydroponics. Recirculating hydroponic cultivation system was consisted of planting port, LED lamp, water tank, and circulating pump for hydroponic. Nutrient solution was used in the standard solution for Japan vegetables experimental station and commercial hydroponic. The result showed that electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS) and pH, depending on the growth of lettuce decreased continuously. With the growth of the lettuce, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, phosphate phosphorus were required for periodic replacement. The number of pH compensation due to the growth of lettuce are the most high. The concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ during the lettuce growth showed no significant change. However, $K^+$ concentration increased due to the replacement with nitrogen and phosphorus. Electric conductivity and total dissolved solids with total nutrient concentration showed the linear relationship and the correlation coefficient $R^2$ were 0.8601 and the 0.827, respectively.

  • Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) cultivation methods are rapidly changing from traditional soil cultivation to high bed hydroponics, which are easy to agricultural working. The objective was to evaluate the growth characteristics of three strawberry cultivars cultivated high bed system. The "Seolhyang", "Altaking", and "Keumsil" strawberry plants were transplanted in a glass-type greenhouse at Kyungpook National University Gunwi Agricultural Field. The cultivation period was approximately seven months from September 17, 2021 to April 21, 2022. Growth parameters measured including the number of leaves, plant height, petiole length, leaf length, leaf width, and crown diameter at two-week intervals. The environmental parameters for each location in the greenhouse were collected. Plant height in all cultivars continued to decrease from the early stage to the late stage of growth. The crown diameter was increased by 50 DAT, and then gradually decreased until late growth stage in all cultivars. Results indicated that the growth parameters represented to vary according to the cultivar of strawberry plants.
