  • Sulfur is an essential element in plants, including amino acids, vitamin synthesis, and acting as an antioxidant. However, the interaction between endogenous sulfur and proline synthesis has not been yet fully documented. White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is known as a species highly sensitive to sulfate supply. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the role of sulfur in regulating proline metabolism in relation to ammonia detoxification and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) accumulation in white clover. The detached leaves of white clover were immersed in solution containing different concentration of sulfate (0, 10, 100, and 1000 mM MgSO4). As MgSO4 concentrations were increased, the concentration of H2O2 increased up to 2.5-fold compared to control, accompanied with H2O2 detection in leaves. Amino acid concentrations significantly increased only at higher levels (100 and 1000 mM MgSO4). No significant difference was observed in protein concentration. Proline and ∆1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) concentrations slightly decreased at 10 and 100 mM MgSO4 treatments, whereas it rapidly increased over 1.9-fold at 1000 mM MgSO4 treatment. Ammonia concentrations gradually increased up to 8.6-fold. These results indicate that exogenous sulfur levels are closely related to H2O2 and ammonia synthesis but affect proline biosynthesis only at a higher level.

  • Two novel copper(II) complexes, [Cu(dmamhp)$(H_2O)_2(SO_4)]_n$ (1) and [Cu(dmamhp)$(NO_3)_2(H_2O)]{\cdot}H_2O$ (2) [dmamhp = 2-dimethylaminomethyl-3-hydroxypyridine] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound 1 displays a double one-dimensional chains structure, in which each chain is constituted with the distorted octahedral copper(II) complex bridged through bidentate sulfate ligands resulting in a coordination polymer. The bifurcated hydrogen bonds and $\pi-\pi$ interactions play important roles in the formation of the double chains structure. On the other hand, compound 2 adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry around copper(II) ion and exists as a discrete monomer. There are intermolecular bifurcated hydrogen bonds and $\pi-\pi$ stacking interactions between the monomeric units. The magnetic properties revealed that the paramagnetic behaviors are dominantly manifested and there are no intermolecular magnetic interactions in both compound 1 and 2.

  • The sensitivity of a mehtanogen and sulfate-reducing bacterium isolated from a sea-based landfill site Cd$^{2+}$ and CU$^{2+}$ was studied. Methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria in leachates of the waste disposal site were enumerated using the MPN method. Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum KHT, isolated from the leachate, could not grow at 0.5 mM Cd$^{2+}$ or 1.0 mM CU$^{2+}$. Desulfotomaculum sp. RHT, isolated from the same leachate, was able to insolubilization 3.0 mM Cd$^{2+}$ or 2.0 mM CU$^{2+}$ by production of hydrogen sulfide. When strains KHT and RHT were cultured together in the presence of the heavy metals, strain KHT could grow at high heavy metal concentrations after insolubilization of the metals by strain RHT. strain RHT.

  • To remove sulfur dioxide from flue gas by the method of metal oxide, copper powder of average diameter $2.4\mu\textrm{m}$and $51\mu\textrm{m}$ were used in a fixed bed reactor over a, temperature range of $300^{\circ}C-500^{\circ}C$. Copper oxide reacts with sulfur dioxide producing cupric sulfate and it can be regenerated from the latter by using hydrogen or methane. Experimental results showed that the reaction rate was increased by the increase of reaction temperature in the range of $300^{\circ}C-422^{\circ}C$ and the removal efficiency of sulfur dioxide was high in case of small size copper particle. However the removal efficiency was decreased at higher temperature due to decomposition of cupric sulfate. The rate controlling step of this reaction was chemical reaction and deactivating catalysts model can be applied to this reaction. The rate constants for this reaction and deactivation are as follows : k=8,367exp(-10,298/RT) Kd=2.23exp(-8,485/RT)

  • Biofiltration of polluted gas streams contained $H_2S$ was studied. The experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale reactor with a porous ceramic media inoculated with sulfur oxidizing bacterium, TAS which was isolated from activiated sludge. The concentration of $H_2S$ in the inlet gas varied from 109 to 3,841 ppm, at the various space velocities(SV) of 50 $h^{-1}$ to 250 $h^{-1}$. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effects of such parameters as pH, concentration of sulfate ion and retention time on the pressure drop and maximum elimination capacity. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ decreased as the $H_2S$ concentration or gas velocity increased in the inlet gas. Pressure drop was insignificant in this system. The maximum elimination capacity could reach up to 16.35g-S/kg-dry packing material/day.

  • The oxide film was formed in hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) environment by potentio-dynamic method. Corrosion potentials and rates of the X-65 and X-80 line pipe steels were -0.3495 $V_{SHE}$, $2.833{\times}10^{-3}A/cm^2$ and 0.2716 $V_{SHE}$ and $2.533{\times}10^{-3}A/cm^2$, respectively. Surface composition analysis of the oxide film contained sulfur. Thermodynamic analysis of the HIC solution chemistry suggested that the oxide phase consisted of iron sulfate. Dynamic nano-indentation method applied to determine nano-hardnesses of the oxide film and base metal hardness.

  • Treatment of wool fabric with aromatic aldehydes followed by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide gave rise to coloring reaction. The colored fabric was bleached by reduction and recovered the color by oxidation. The oxidation in ethanol solution gave higher k/s values than that in aqueous solution. Photo-stability of the colored fabric was improved by treating with nickel sulfate.

  • The axial alcohol in trans-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol was oxidized more readily than the equatorial alcohol in cis-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol by NBS in aqueous dioxane. On the contrary, the equatorial alcohol was preferentially oxidized to the axial one by 10% aqueous sodium hypochlorite in the presence of tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate (TBHS). The specificity indicates the presence of two different mechanism. In acidic medium, the cleavage of C-H bond is rate determining step while the reactivity of the alcohol is important in the presence of TBHS. The mechanism in basic medium without TBHS will be discussed.
