Rechargeable battery such as lithium-ion battery has been noticed as a kinds of the energy storage system in the recent energy utilization and widely used actually in various small electronic equipment and electric vehicles. However, many thermal runaway caused battery accidents occurred recently, which still is obstacle for advanced application of lithium ion battery. One of the main differences to general fires is the existence of ionized electrolyte with electron during combustion. Therefore, we simply simulated the ion addition effects of battery fires by introducing an ionized fuel in jet diffusion flames. When the ionized methane through a corona discharge was used as fuel, the overall flame stability and shape such as flame length showed no significant difference from normal methane flame, but NOx and CO emissions measured at the post flame region decreased. The ion addition effect of methane oxidation was also numerically simulated with the modeling of hydrogen addition in the mixture. It was confirmed that the hydrogen addition at a fixed temperature had a similar effects on ionization of methane and hence could be modeled successfully.

In this study, to ensure the safety of the packaged hydrogen refueling system, the improvement plan was derived by using 3-dimensional CFD program (FLACS). We also confirmed the effectiveness of risk reduction and the suitability of safety standard. By ventilation performance evaluation according to the position of the vent, it demonstrated that the vent should be installed at the ceiling to safely ventilate without stagnation of the leaked gas. In case of ventilation system according to KGS standard, risk situation could be resolved after about 5 minutes in the worst leaked condition. The result showed that jet fire and explosion inside the packaged system could affect the surrounding facilities. This proves that the standard for installing flame detectors, emergency shut down system and protection wall is appropriate.
This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the transcritical mixing and reacting flow processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using SRK (Souve-Redlich-Kwong) equation of state model. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent non-premixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the real fluid effects and the precise structure of the transcritical cryogenic liquid nitrogen jet and gaseous hydrogen/liquid oxygen coaxial jet flame.

The extinction of premixed flames under the influence of stretch is studied numerically. A wide range of fuel (hydrogen, ethylene, acetylene, methane, propane and methanol) and air mixtures are established in an opposed jet and their flame properties such as flame speed, flame thickness, thermal diffusivity, and stretch rate at extinction are computed. Computations are made using several chemical kinetic mechanism (Smooke, Kee et al. and Peters). The major result is that, in contrast to the various previous claims of extinction Karlovitz number varying over three orders of magnitude, it is found to be constant around two for all of the mixtures tested. That is, premixed flames are extinguished when the physical flow time decreases (due to increased stretch rate) to the point where it approximately equals the chemical reaction time. Here the relevant chemical reaction time is not the one computed using the one-dimensional flame properties as originally suggested in the formulation of Karlovitz number, but rather it is the one obtained using the stretched flame properties which fully reflect the effect of straining on the flame structure.
The effects of acoustic excitation of coaxial air on mixing enhancement and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission were investigated. A compression driver was attached to the coaxial air supply tube to impose excitation. Measurements of NOx emission with frequency sweeping were performed to observe the trend of NOx emission according to the fuel and air flow conditions and to inquire about the effective excitation frequency for reducing NOx. Then, Schlieren photographs were taken to visualize the flow field and to study the effect of excitation. In addition, phase-locked particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed to acquire velocity field for each case and to investigate the effect of vortices more clearly. Direct photographs and OH chemiluminescence photographs were taken to study the variation of flame length and reaction zone. It was found that acoustic forcing frequencies close to the resonance frequencies of coaxial air supply tube could reduce NOx emission. This NOx reduction was influenced by mixing enhancement due to large-scale vortices formed by fluctuation of coaxial air jet velocity.
This paper is an attempt to give a concise overview of the state-of-the-art in the recent liquid hydrogen safety researches with unwanted event progress. The vessel of liquified hydrogen may fail and liquid hydrogen spilled. The hydrogen will immediately start to evaporate above a pool and make a hydrogen cloud. The cloud will disperse and can produce a vapor cloud explosion. The vessel containing the liquid hydrogen may not be able to cope with the boil-off due to heat influx, especially in case of a fire, and a BLEVE may occur. In equipment where it exists as compressed gas, a leak generates a jet of gas that can self-ignite immediately or after a short delay and produce a jet flame, or in case it ignites at a source a certain distance from the leak (delayed ignition), a flash fire occurs in the open and with confinement a deflagration or even detonation may develop. The up-to-date knowledge in these events, recent progress and future research are discussed in brief.

Rayleigh scattering and laser induced predissociative fluorescence are employed for capturing two-dimensional images of temperature and species concentration in a laminar nonpremixed flame of a diluted hydrogen jet. Rayleigh scattering cross-sections are experimentally obtained ar 248nm. Dispersed LIPF spectra of OH and O$_2$ are also measured in a flame in order to confirm the excitation of single vibronic state of OH and O$_2$ .OH and O$_2$ are excited on the P$_1$(8) line of the A $^2\Sigma ^+(v^`=3) - X^2\pi (V^"=0)$ band and R(17) line of the Schumann-Runge band B $^3\Sigma _u^-(v^`=0) - X ^3\Sigma _g^-(v^"=6)$, respectively. Fluorescence spectra of OH and Hot O$_2$ are captured and two-dimensional images of the hydrogen flame field are successfully visualized.

An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of shock waves on the supersonic hydrogen-air jet flames stabilized in the Mach 2.5 model scramjet combustor. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Two identical $10^{\cire}$ wedges were mounted on the diverging sidewalls of the combustor in order to produce oblique shock waves that interacted with the flame. Schlieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and combustion efficiency at two different air stagnation temperatures were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock wave-flame interaction. It was observed that shock waves significantly altered the shape of supersonic jet flames, but had different effects on combustion efficiency depending on air temperatures. At the higher air stagnation temperature and higher fuel flow rates, combustion of efficiency showed a better result.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of laminar syngas/air mixture with 10% hydrogen content impinging normally to a flat plate of cylinder. Effects of impinging distance, Reynolds number and equivalence ratio as major parameters on heat fluxes of stagnation point and radial direction were examined experimentally by the direct photos and data acquisitions from heat flux sensor. In this work, we could find the incurved flame behavior of line shaped inner top-flame in very closed distance between flat plate and burner exit, which has been not reported from general gas-fuels. There were 3 times of maximum and 2 times minimum heat flux of stagnation point with respect to the impinging distance for the investigation of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio effect. It was confirmed that the maximum heat flux of stagnation point in 1'st and 2'nd peaks increased with the increase of the Reynolds number due to the Nusselt number increment. There was a third maximum rise in the heat flux of stagnation point for larger separation distances and this phenomenon was different each for laminar and turbulent condition. The heat transfer characteristics between the stagnation and wall jet region in radial heat flux profiles was investigated by the averaged heat flux value. It has been observed that the values of averaged heat flux traced well with the characteristics of major parameters and the decreasing of averaged heat flux was coincided with the decreasing trend of adiabatic temperature in spite of the same flow condition, especially for impinging distance and equivalence ratio effects.

A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of shock waves on the mixing and the recirculation zone of a hydrogen jet diffusion flame in a supersonic combustor. The general trends are compared with the experimental results obtained from the supersonic combustor at the University of Michigan. For the numerical simulation of supersonic diffusion flames, multi-species Navier-Stokes equations and detailed chemistry reaction equations of $H_2$-Air are considered. The $K-{\omega}/k-{\varepsilon}$ blended two equation turbulent model is used. Roe's FDS method and MUSCL method are used for convection fluxes in governing equations. Numerical results show that when slender wedges are mounted at the combustor wall the mixing and the combustion are enhanced and the size of recirculation zone is increased . The flame shape of supersonic flames is different in the flame-tip; it is not closed but open. The flame shape is shown to be greatly affected by shock waves.
