  • In this study mechanical strength of A53B carbon steel was analyzed using several types of test specimens directly machined from oil recycling pipe experienced a failure due to hydrogen attack in chemical plants. High temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) is the damage process of grain boundary facets due to a chemical reaction of carbides with hydrogen, thus forming cavities with high pressure methane gas. Driven by the methane gas pressure, the cavities grow on grain boundaries forming intergranular micro cracks. Microscopic optical examination, tensile test, Charpy impact test, hardness measurement, and small punch (SP) test were performed. Carbon content of the hydrogen attacked specimens was dramatically reduced compared with that of standard specification of A53B. Traces of decarburization and micro-cracks were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Charpy impact energy in hydrogen attacked part of the pipe exhibited very low values due to the decarburization and micro fissure formation by HTHA, on the other hand, data tested from the sound part of the pipe showed high and scattered impact energy. Maximum reaction forces and ductility in SP test were decreased at hydrogen attacked part of the pipe compared with sound part of the pipe. Finite element analyses for SP test were performed to estimate tensile properties for untested part of the pipe in tensile test. And fracture toughness was calculated using an equivalent strain concept with SP test and finite element analysis results.

  • The physicochemical characteristics such as glass transition temperature (Tg), surface energy, swelling and FT-IR of [P(AA-co-PEGMM)], a copolymer of acrylic acid (AA) and polyethyleneglycol monoethylether mono methacrylate (PEGMM), were evaluated. The Tg of [P(AA-co-PEGMM)] decreased with increasing PEGMM content. [P(AA-co-PEGMM)] with 18 mole% PEGMM had the Tg of about $40^{\circ}C$, the similar physiological temperature of human. Moreover, [P(AA-co-PEGMM)] with lower PEGMM content had higher hydration and expected lower mucoadhesive strengths. To predict the mucoadhesiveness of [P(AA-co-PEGMM)] films, the contact angle of films were measured. With the increasing content of PEGMM of films, the contact angle was increased and the higher mucoadhesive forces was expected. ATR-FTIR studies revealed that the addition of the PEG moiety in AA increased the potential of hydrogen bonding for [P(AA-co-PEGMM)] as compared to cross linking polyacrylic acid (cr-PAA) because the oxygen in the repeat unit of PEG contributed in the formation of hydrogen bonding in the presence of mucin solution.

  • Ni-plated polytetrafluoroethylene(Ni-PTFE) particles($25{\mu}m$, $500{\mu}m$) were prepared by using nickel electroless plating. The Ni content in Ni-PTFE particles increased with increasing the amount of reduction agent. At about 53 wt% Ni content, $25{\mu}m$ Ni-PTFE particles showed conductivity of 320S/m. The Ni-PTFE particles were formed into the Ni-PTFE plate using heat treatment at $350^{\circ}C$ under $10{\sim}1000kg/cm^2$. The Ni-PTFE plate displayed the high conductivity of 5100S/m due to the formation of 3-dimentional Ni network. The plate was used as an electrode in an alkaline fuel cell(AFC). In terms of the current density, the Ni-PTFE electrode having higher Ni content(53 wt%) showed improved performance.

  • Effect of oxygen content in the ultrafine tungsten powder fabricated by electrical explosion of wire method on the behvior of spark plasma sintering was investigated. The initial oxygen content of 6.5 wt% of as-fabricated tungsten powder was reduced to 2.3 and 0.7 wt% for the powders which were reduction-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hour and at $500^{\circ}C$ for 1h in hydrogen atmosphere, respectively. The reduction-treated tungsten powders were spark-plasma sintered at $1200-1600^{\circ}C$ for 100-3600 sec. with applied pressure of 50 MPa under vacuum of 0.133 Pa. Maximun sindered density of 97% relative density was obtained under the condition of $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1h from the tungsten powder with 0.7 wt% oxygen. Sintering activation energy of $95.85kJ/mol^{-1}$ was obtained, which is remarkably smaller than the reported ones of $380{\sim}460kJ/mol^{-1}$ for pressureless sintering of micron-scale tungsten powders.

  • In order to save the energy in vehicles using renewable energy, it is necessary to reduce the weight of parts with polymer matrix composites. Carbon nanotube (CNT) is the nano-scale reinforcement used to increase the interlaminar strength of fiber reinforced composites or enhance the fracture toughness of polymer. However, since the degree of improvement in mechanical properties varies according to the various experimental conditions such as shape of reinforcement, types of matrix and dispersion of reinforcement, research to find the optimal conditions is essentially needed. In this study, CNT/epoxy composites with different CNT concentration were fabricated under the same conditions, and the optimal CNT content (2 wt%) was found through Mode 1 fracture toughness test. Furthermore, through optical microscopy, it was confirmed that the fracture toughness was rather decreased due to the CNT aggregation when the CNT content exceeded 2 wt%.

  • Gaseous sulfur compound such as $H_2S$ or COS in coal- or biomass-derived hot syngas can be purified by solid sorbents at high temperatures. In this study, we investigated the physical properties and reactivity of solid regenerable desulfurization sorbents with 37.2, 41.9, and 46.5wt% ZnO to look into the ZnO content effect. The sorbents were produced by spray-drying method to apply to a fluidized-bed process. Sulfidation and regeneration reaction were carried out using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Sorbent prepared with 46.5wt% ZnO had physical properties suitable for a fluidized-bed process applications such as spherical shape, sufficient mechanical strength and density, high porosity and surface area. It showed high sulfur sorption capacity of 10.4wt% (ZnO utilization of 57%) at reaction temperatures of 500 and $650^{\circ}C$ for sulfidation and regeneration, respectively. However, the sulfur sorption capacity and ZnO utilization were significantly reduced and dimple shape appeared when the ZnO content decreased to 37.2 and 41.9wt%. Sulfur sorption capacity and regenerability were improved as reaction temperature increased within the experimental temperatures used in this work. The reaction temperature zones of $1500{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ and $650{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ are recommended for sulfidation and regeneration, respectively, to lead best reaction performances of the ZnO-based spray-dried sorbents developed in this work.

  • The $LaCrO_3$-dispersed Cr alloys for metallic interconnect of solid oxide fuel cell were prepared as a function of $LaCrO_3$ content in the range of 5 to 25 vol.% and were sintered at 1500$^{\circ}C$ under an Ar atmosphere with 5 vol.% $H_2$. The sintering and oxidation behaviors of these alloys were examined. The alloys indicated a good sinterability above 95% relative density at a given sintering condition, and their sintering densities is independent on $LaCrO_3$ content. The $LaCrO_3$ particles of the sintered alloys were concentrated on interfaces of Cr particles, and the size of the Cr particles increased with decreasing $LaCrO_3$ content, which is caused by inhibited grain growth of Cr particle by $LaCrO_3$ particle. The oxidation test showed all $LaCrO_3$-dispersed Cr alloys have good oxidation resistance as compared with pure Cr, which is attributed to presence of $LaCrO_3$ at the interface at which the oxidation reaction occurs rapidly. The Cr alloys with about 15 vol.% $LaCrO_3$ are very resistant to oxidation.

  • Dispersions of fumed silica are made in 6 kinds of mono-solvents and mixed solvents which have hydroxyl group, non hydroxyl group, different polarity, and different molecular size. The viscosity and rheology behaviors of the each dispersion are investigated according to the viewpoint of solvent characteristic. The silica dispersion in polar solvent with hydroxyl group is stable and low viscous sol. The silica dispersion in non-polar solvent with non-hydroxyl group is high viscous gel. When the solvent with hydroxyl group is added to the silica dispersions with non-polar solvents, they show the reduction of viscosity with solvent content. They have minimum critical content which shows no viscosity change. The minimum critical solvent content is decreased according to the polarity of solvents with no hydroxyl group. The solvation layer which is formed on the silica surface through hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl-containing solvent and the silanol group of silica surface is the reason of stable and low viscous sol. In case of non-polar solvent, silanol on adjacent silica particles interacted directly by hydrogen bonding show high viscous and flocculated gel.
