  • Recently, a study on alternative and renewable energy is being conducted due to energy depletion and environmental problems. In particular, a hydrogen has the advantage of converting and storing the remaining energy into water-electrolyzed hydrogen through renewable energy generation. In general, due to reasons such as insulation problems, a study on high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks and related parts has recently been conducted. However, in the case of liquid hydrogen, the volume can be reduced by about 800 times or more compared to high-pressure hydrogen gas, so the study on this is needed as a technology that can increase energy density. In this study, the evaporation characteristics were analyzed under fixed heat flux conditions for liquid hydrogen storage tanks and the change in thermal stratification according to sloshing was analyzed. The heat flux condition was fixed at 250 W/m2 and the horizontal resonance frequency of the primary mode was applied to the storage tank. As a result, it was confirmed that the thermal stratification phenomenon decreased compared to the case where the slashing was not present due to forced convection when the slashing was present.

  • In connecting parts of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, since the rubber ring is permeable to hydrogen, it is necessary to use a metal sealing structure which ensures leakage stability. Finite element analysis was performed to verify the fitting characteristics of the metal sealing structure, which is used to connect the pipe to a high pressure hydrogen FCEV tank. Deformation shape, contact distance and axial load were compared experimentally and these values were in agreement with each other. In the contact surface, between the pipe and the fitting body, the stress at the edge of the contact surface was higher than the center point, which was considered to be a good characteristic in view point of the leakage. The location of the contact points has almost no change in the upper part of the fitting, but that of the lower parts move downward as the fastening amount increases. The contact pressure at the lower part is maintained at the same constant level.

  • It is not easy to fully fuel high pressure(70 MPa) hydrogen in a hydrogen vehicle tank quickly. This is because the temperature inside the tank rises rapidly due to heat caused by the Joule-Thomson effect, etc. So fueling protocols such as SAE J2601 in the U.S. and JPEC-S 0003 in Japan appeared. However, there is a problem with these protocols that a number assumption are introduced and the content is too complex and limited in scope. This study was conducted to develop a new protocol based on complete real-time communication. In this study, the hydrogen fueling simulation program were used to examine how the pressure ramp rate affects the temperature and pressure rise in the tank and the fueling flow rate. The results confirmed that the first parameter to be considered in determining the pressure ramp rate is the temperature of the tank.

  • Given the inadequate regulatory framework for liquefied hydrogen gas storage tanks on ships and the limitations of the IGC Code, designed for liquefied natural gas, this study introduces a critical assessment procedure to ensure the safety and suitability of such tank designs. This study performed a heat transfer analysis for boil-off gas (BOG) calculations and established separate design load cases to evaluate the yielding and buckling strength. In addition, the study assessed methodologies for both high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue assessments, complemented by comprehensive structural integrity evaluations using finite element analysis. A comprehensive approach was developed to assess the structural integrity of Type C tanks by conducting crack propagation analysis and comparing these results with the IGC Code criteria. The practicality and efficacy of these methods were validated through their application on a 23K-class liquefied hydrogen carrier at the concept design stage. These findings may have important implications for enhancing safety standards and regulatory policies.

  • In the present study, the frequency of the undesired accident was estimated for a quantitative risk assessment of a large-scale hydrogen liquefaction plant. As a representative example, the hydrogen liquefaction plant located in Ingolstadt, Germany was chosen. From the analysis of the liquefaction process and operating conditions, it was found that a $LH_2$ storage tank was one of the most dangerous facilities. Based on the accident scenarios, frequencies of possible accidents were quantitatively evaluated by using both fault tree analysis and event tree analysis. The overall expected frequency of the loss containment of hydrogen from the $LH_2$ storage tank was $6.83{\times}10^{-1}$times/yr (once per 1.5 years). It showed that only 0.1% of the hydrogen release from the $LH_2$ storage tank occurred instantaneously. Also, the incident outcome frequencies were calculated by multiplying the expected frequencies with the conditional probabilities resulting from the event tree diagram for hydrogen release. The results showed that most of the incident outcomes were dominated by fire, which was 71.8% of the entire accident outcome. The rest of the accident (about 27.7%) might have no effect to the population.

  • During the hydrogen fueling process, hydrogen temperature inside the compressed tank were limited below 85℃ due to the allowable pressure of tank material. The chiller system to cool compressed hydrogen used R407C, greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential (GWP), as a refrigerant. To reduce greehouse gas emission, it should be replaced by refrigerant with a low GWP. This study proposes a chiller system for fueling hydrogen with R290, consisted in propane, by applying the C3 pre-cooled system use d in the LNG liquefaction process. The proposed system consisted of hydrogen compression and cooling sections and optimized the operating pressure through exergy analysis. It was also compared to the exergy efficiency with the existing system at the optimal operating pressure. The result showed that the optimal operating pressure is 700 kPa in 2-stage, 840 kPa/490 kPa in 3-stage, and the exergy efficiency increased by 17%.

  • Urban air mobility (UAM) has recently attracted lots of attention as a solution to urban centralization and global warming. Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) is a concept that emerges as one of the promising and clean technologies for UAM. There are two difficult challenges for eVTOL aircraft to solve. One is how to improve the weight efficiency of aircraft, and the other is how to complete long-range missions for UAM's flight scenarios. To approach these challenges, we propose a consolidated concept design of battery-fuel cell hybrid tiltrotor aircraft with a liquid hydrogen (LH2) fuel tank. The efficiency of a battery-fuel cell hybrid powertrain system on the designed eVTOL aircraft is compared to that of a battery-only powertrain system. This paper shows how much payload can increase and the flight scenario can be improved by hybridizing the battery and fuel cell and presenting a detailed concept of a cryogenic storage tank for LH2.

  • Owing to advantages of polymeric materials for hydrogen tank liner like light-weight property and high specific strength, polymer based composites have gained much attention. Despite of many benefits, polymeric materials for fuel cell tank cause problems which is critical to applications as low gas barrier property, and poor processability when adding fillers. For these reasons, improving gas barrier property of polymer composites is required to study for expanding application fields. This work presents impermeable polymer nanocomposites by introducing thin barrier coating using layer by layer (LBL) deposition method. Also, bi-layered and quad-layered nanocomposites were fabricated and compared for identifying relationship between deposition step and gas barrier property. Reduction in gas permeability was observed without interrupting mechanical property and processability. It is discussed that proper coating conditions were suggested when different coating materials and deposition steps were applied. We investigated morphology, gas barrier property and mechanical properties of fabricated nanocomposites by FE-SEM, Oxygen permeation analyzer, UTM, respectively. In addition, we revealed the mechanism of barrier performance of LBL coating using materials which have high aspect ratio.
