The hydrogen torch ignition system has been widely used to ignite a pure aluminum for aluminum powder combustion system because of its simple ignition method. However, the conventional hydrogen torch ignition system has a disadvantage that requires a high-pressure tank to supply hydrogen, which leads to the increase of the weight. In order to solve this problem, a hydrogen ignition system using $NaBH_4$, a solid chemical hydride, was designed in this study. The thermal decomposition of $NaBH_4$ was initiated approximately at $500^{\circ}C$ and hydrogen was generated. The parameters affecting the thermal decomposition characteristics of $NaBH_4$ were analyzed and the aluminum combustion test was carried out using $NaBH_4$-based hydrogen ignition system to study the applicability to a practical aluminum-combustion propulsion system.
Hydrogen-dimethy ether (DME) and hydrogen-diesel compression ignition engine combustion were investigated and compared each other in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing, $-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME and diesel were injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME and diesel inejction timing was varied to find the optimum CI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. Fuel consumption, heat release rate, and exhaust emissions were measured to analyze each combustion characteristics of each ignition promoter. Fuel consumption was decreased when diesel was used as an ignition promoter. This is due to the lower volatility of diesel which created more stratified charge than DME.

The aim of this paper is controlling ignition timing and load in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion with low cetane number fuel, hydrogen. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is an advanced combustion technology that achieves higher thermal efficiency and lower $NO_x$ emissions than that of conventional combustion system. Dimethyl ether (DME), which has been researched widely as the most attractive alternative fuel of diesel, is attractive for HCCI combustion because of the easy evaporation. In this study, the single cylinder DME engine operated with a direct injection system has been used to investigate combustion processes and emissions of DME HCCI with a premixed hydrogen supply. The experiment was carried out under various engine speed and fraction rates of hydrogen. As a result, the increase of fraction rates of hydrogen retard the DME ignition timing and eliminated the knocking during high engine speed condition. IMEP was increased with increase of fraction rates of hydrogen by 30%. 40% of the fraction rates of hydrogen resulted in misfiring. The $NO_x$ emission was reduced by increasing the fraction rates of hydrogen, but HC emission was increased.

Ignition of hydrogen and oxygen in the "third limit" is theoretically investigated in the stagnation point flow with activation energy asymptotics. With the steady-state approximations of H, OH, O and HO$_2$, a two-step reduced kinetic mechanism is derived for the regime lower than the crossover temperature T$_{c}$ at which the rates of production and consumption of all radicals are equal. Appropriate scaling of Damkohler number successfully provides the explicit relationship between pressure, temperature and strain rate at ignition. It is shown that, compared with those for the counterflow, ignition temperatures for the stagnation point flow are considerably increased with increasing the system pressure. This is because ignition in the "third limit" is characterized by the production of reduction of $H_2O$$_2$, which is reduced by wall effect. Strain rate substantially affects ignition temperature because key reaction rates of $H_2O$$_2$ are comparably with its transport rate, while the mixture temperature and the hydrogen composition do not significantly affect ignition temperature.e.

New concept ramjet propulsion system with liquid bipropellant rocket using "Green Propellant" hydrogen peroxide for launch stage is proposed. In this novel concept, hydrogen peroxide gas generator produces hot oxygen at launch stage and kerosene injects to this jet in combustor. For basic study of this new concept ramjet system, investigation of auto-ignition characteristics and combustion of decomposed hydrogen peroxide and kerosene was conducted. In various test cases, auto-ignition and stable combustion was verified. The combustion temperature of 400°C and Fuel/Oxidizer mixture ratio of 0.6 were the limit of auto ignition. Through the experiment results, the possibility of novel concept combined propulsion system using hydrogen peroxide gas generator is ascertained.
Hydrogen-dimethy ether(DME) partially premixed compression ignition(PCCI) engine combustion was investigated in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing, $-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME was injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME inejction timing was varied to find the optimum PCCI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. As the DME injection was retarded, the CO and HC emissions were decreased due to high combustion efficiency. NOx emissions were increased due to the high in-cylinder temperature. When DME were injected at $-30^{\circ}CA$ aTDC, reduction of HC, CO and NOx emissions was possible with high value of IMEP.

Since hydrogen has the lower minimum ignition energy than that of gasoline, hydrogen could be also appropriate for the IC engine systems. However, due to the low ignition energy, there might be a 'back-fire' and 'pre-ignition' problems with hydrogen SI(Spark-ignition) combustion. In this research, cooling effects of intake gas mixture on the improvement of the maximum power output were evaluated in a 2.4 L SI engine. There were two ways to cool intake gas mixtures. The first one was cooling intake fresh air by adjusting inter-cooler system after turbocharger. The other one was cooling hydrogen fuel before supplying by using heat ex-changer. Cooling hydrogen was performed under natural aspired condition. The result showed that cooling fresh air from 40 ℃ to 20~30 ℃ improved the maximum brake power up to 6.5~8.6 % and cooling hydrogen fuel as -6 ℃ enhanced the maximum brake power likewise.

Due to the rapid spread and low minimum ignition energy of hydrogen, rupture is highly likely to cause fire, explosion and major accidents. The self-ignition of high-pressure hydrogen is highly likely to ignite immediately when it leaks from an open space, resulting in jet fire. Results of the diffusion and leakage simulation show that jet effect occurs from the leakage source to a certain distance. And at the end of location, the vapor cloud explosion can be occurred due to the formation of hydrogen vapor clouds by built-up. In the result, it is important that depending on the time of ignition, a jet fire or a vapor cloud explosion may occur. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account jet effect by location of leakage source and establish a damage minimizing plan for the possible jet fire or vapor cloud explosion. And it is required to any kind of measurements such as an interlock system to prevent hydrogen leakage or minimize the amount of leakage when detecting leakage of gas.
This study measured the ignition limits of methane-air, propane-air, ethylene-air, and hydrogen-air mixture gases by discharge spark of D.C. power resistive circuit. The used experimental device is the IEC type spark ignition test apparatus, it consists of explosion chamber and supply -exhaust system of mixture gas. Mixture gases (methane-air, propane-air, ethylene-air, and hydrogen-air) were put into explosion chamber of IEC type spark ignition test apparatus, then it was confirmed whether ignition was made by 3,200 times of discharge spark between tungsten electrode and cadmium electrode. The ignition limits were found by increasing or decreasing the value of current. For the exact experiment, the ignition sensitivity was calibrated before and after the experiment in each condition. The ignition limits were found by changing the value of concentration of each gas-air mixture in D.C. 24 [V] resistive circuit. As the result of experiment, it was found that the minimum ignition limit currents exist at the value of methane-air 8.3 [$Vol\%$], propane-air 5.25[$Vol\%$], ethylene-air 7.8 [$Vol\%$], and hydrogen-air 21[$Vol\%$] mixture gases. For each the minimum ignition concentration of gases, the relationships between voltage and minimum ignition current were found. The results are as follows. - The minimum ignition limits are decreasing in the order of methane, propane, ethylene, and hydrogen. - The value of ignition current is inversely proportional to the value of source voltage. - The minimum ignition limit currents increase sharply at more than 2 [A]. The reason is caused by overheating the electrode.

Because of low flame ion density in hydrogen-air mixture, many residual electric energy could be existed in the ignition system of hydrogen engine, If these residual energy discharged abnormally during intake stroke, it may be the cause of backfire occurrence which is serious problem in development of hydrogen fueled engine but unsolved in spite of many concerned research on it. In this study, the possibility of backfire occurrence by abnormal electric discharge and countermeasure of that were investigated by using the experimental single cylinder hydrogen fueled engine with two types of ignition system. The results show that abnormal electric discharge appeared in low load with low ion density and then results in back fire occurrence, It is also seen that countermeasure method installing larger earth resistance in high tension code is effective to control abnormal electric discharge.
