The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous emission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. A better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluorine contents found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The correlation coefficient ranges from 0.807 to 0.978 with an average being 0.922. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluorides have more effects than sulfur oxides. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicle has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on l000-grain weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.
By use of a simple two-point extrapolation scheme estimating the correlation energies of the molecules along with the basis sets specifically targeted for extrapolation, we have shown that the MP2 basis set limit binding energies of large hydrogen-bonded complexes can be accurately predicted with relatively small amount of computational cost. The basis sets employed for computation and extrapolation consist of the smallest correlation consistent basis set cc-pVDZ and another basis set made of the cc-pVDZ set plus highest angular momentum polarization functions from the cc-pVTZ set, both of which were then augmented by diffuse functions centered on the heavy atoms except hydrogen in the complex. The correlation energy extrapolation formula takes the (X+1)-3 form with X corresponding to 2.0 for the cc-pVDZ set and 2.3 for the other basis set. The estimated MP2 basis set limit binding energies for water hexamer, hydrogen fluoride pentamer, alaninewater, phenol-water, and guanine-cytosine base pair complexes of nucleic acid by this method are 45.2(45.9), 36.1(37.5), 10.9(10.7), 7.1(6.9), and 27.6(27.7) kcal/mol, respectively, with the values in parentheses representing the reference basis set limit values. A comparison with the DFT results by B3LYP method clearly manifests the effectiveness and accuracy of this method in the study of large hydrogen-bonded complexes.

Since the number and the amount of toxic substances handled by domestic companies have been increased, the possibility of serious chemical accidents has become severe. According to Chemistry Safety Clearing-house (CSC), the number of chemical accidents for the last five years has been rapidly raised. A representative example which shows the serious impact of a chemical accident is HF (Hydrogen Fluoride) accident generated in Gumi in 2012. In order to make effective responses for mitigating losses of accidents, the most suitable consequence model has to be selected and implemented throughout the considerations of chemical properties and environments. Even if each consequence model has been verified by the results of experiments, it is necessary to analyze and compare the usability of them according to various scenarios. In this study, the Gumi HF accident is simulated by HGSYSTEM, which is the most specialized model for the release and dispersion of HF. It is found that the ending point of ERPG-2 is about 1 km from the accident point. In order to investigate the usability of the most representative consequence models (ALOHA and CARIS), the results of them are compared with one of HGSYSTEM.
E. coli TG1 pBS TOM Green was cultured to produce toluene-o-monooxygenase (TOM). A biosensor system was successfully constructed using purified TOM to effectively detect trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE), which represent some of the major contaminants in groundwater and soil. In order to utilize TOM as a sensor, NADH, a biological oxidizer, was replaced with hydrogen peroxide which is a chemical oxidizing agent. A three-layered sandwich-type sensing tip was fabricated on the outside of the hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride membrane. TCE and PCE were applied to the sensor and the hydrogen ions were measured by a fiber optic fluorometer using fluoresceinamine. Calibration curves were obtained for TCE and PCE in the concentration range of 0.2-100 mg/l, and the detection limit of the system was $10{\mu}g/l$ for TCE and PCE.
The purpose of this research was to develop a flat panel display device's glass etchant which can replace hydrofluoric acid. The glass etchant was composed of 18~19% wt% of ammonium hydrogen fluoride, 24~25 wt% of sulfuric acid, 45~46 wt% of water, 4~5 wt% of sulfate and 7~8 wt% of fluoro-silicate. By replenishing the etchant which has the amount of 5% of initial solution's mass, it was possible to reuse the etchant continuously. The developed etchant showed $5{\mu}m/min$ of etching rate at $30^{\circ}C$. The reusable etchant, with replenishing 5% of initial etchant mass showed the stable etching rate, which has the deviation of less than $0.1{\mu}m/min$ etching rate. The glass surface of flat panel display device created from our etching process was in good condition with any defects such as pin hole and dimple.

Chemical accidents caused by transport vehicles account for 20% of all chemical accidents every year, but there are difficulties in the accident-response process due to repeated situations where the impact assessment information is unknown. In this study, we developed a calculation table and formula for predicting the range of damage for chlorine and hydrogen fluoride, which have a high domestic usage, high risk of accidents, and high accident frequency in the last 7 years. The calculation table is based on the leakage rate, wind speed, and temperature, and the calculation formula was derived using R software for special situations where it is difficult to apply the calculation table. The calculation table and formula could be used on site by related organizations to obtain important information for decision making, which could help in minimizing damage from chemical accidents, setting separation distances, and deciding to evacuate residents.

As a result of the survey on the emission status of fluorine-based chemicals in Korea, 13 kinds of substances, including hydrogen fluoride (91%) and perfluorocarbons (5%), were emitted in workplaces. By regional groups, about 98% was emitted in the Gyeongbuk, Gyeonggi and Chungcheong regions, and about 98% in three sectors of industry related to manufacture of electronic parts, chemicals and non-metallic mineral products. The detection status of PFOS and PFOA in domestic main rivers was continuously detected in the Nakdong River, the Geum River and the Anseong Stream estuary with high fluorine-related chemical emissions, and four sites of PFOS and two sites of PFOA were detected for the first time in 2021. PFOS and PFOA were continuously detected in relatively high concentrations in the rivers where there were many semiconductor and display related sectors of industry.
The electroless deposition of copper on the hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surface was investigated by means of attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The hydrogen-terminated Si(111) surface prepared was stable under air atmosphere for a day or more. It was found from ATR-FTIR that two bands centered at 2000 and 2260 $cm^{-1}$ appeared after the H-Si(111) surface was immersed in 40% $NH_4F$ solution containing 10 mM $Cu^{2+}$. On the other hand, STM image included the copper islands with a height of 5 nm and a diameter of 10-20 nm. The EDS data displayed the presence of copper, silicon and oxygen species. The results were rationalized in terms of the redox reaction of surface Si atoms and $Cu^{2+}$ ions in solutions, which are changed into $Si(OH)_x(F)_y$ containing $SiF_6^{2-}$ ions and neutral copper islands.
