Shape separation method - a separation process which utilizes the fact that particles of different shape behave differently in force fields- is regarded as an useful measure for recycling, mineral processing, upgrading powdered material and so on. In this study, a trial was given to shape separation method using fluid field to recover pure diatom skeleton - which is thought to have many uses in itself and potential for various applications -from low grade diatomaceous earth of southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The striking difference of shape between diatom skeleton and other minerals like clay and quartz made it natural to choose shape separation method. Considering the size of particles to be separated, among many possible methods of shape separation, hydrodynamic field using hydrocyclone was adopted. And it resulted in recovery of pure diatom skeleton with high purity
We calculate the evolution of multiple supernova (SN) explosions inside a pre-exiting bubble blown up by winds from massive stars, using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations including radiative cooling and thermal conduction effects. First, the development of the wind bubble driven by collective winds from multiple stars during the main sequence is calculated. Then multiple SN explosion is loaded at the center of the bubble and the evolution of the SN remnant is followed for $10^6$ years. We find the size and mass of the SN-driven shell depend on the structure of the pre-existing wind bubble as well as the total SN explosion energy. Most of the explosion energy is lost via radiative cooling, while about 10% remains as kinetic energy and less than 10% as thermal energy of the expanding bubble shell. Thus the photoionization and heating by diffuse radiation emitted by the shock heated gas is the most dominant form of SN feedback into the surrounding interstellar medium.
The central regions of barred-spiral galaxies contain interesting gaseous structures such as dust lanes and nuclear rings with intense star formation. While our previous studies were useful in understanding the formation of these structures star formation history, they were limited to 2D isothermal galaxies in which the stellar disk and halo are modeled by fixed gravitational potentials. To study the effects of bar growth as well as the vertical dimension, we use the mesh-free hydrodynamic code named GIZMO and run 3D simulations by treating the stellar disk and halo as being live. We find that the new 3D models form the gaseous features similarly to the previous 2D models, although the detailed formation processes are quite different. For example, a ring has a large radius when it first forms and shrinks over time in the previous 2D models. In the 3D live-potential models, however, a ring forms small and grows in size with time. We present the results of the new simulations and discuss them in comparison with the previous 2D results.
This paper is mainly concerned with the interaction effects between two vessels and sidewall with a mound. Experimental study on hydrodynamic forces between ship and sidewall with a mound was already shown in the previous paper, measured by varying the distances between ship and sidewall. The ship maneuvering simulation was conducted to find out the minimum safe distance between vessels, which is needed to avoid sea accident in confined waters. From the inspection of this investigation, it indicates the following result. When and if one vessel passes the other vessel through the proximity of sidewall with a mound, the spacing between two vessels is needed for the velocity ratio of 1.2, compared to the case of 1.5. Also, for the case of ship-size estimation, the ship maneuvering motion is more affected by interaction effects for the overtaken small vessel, compared to the overtaking large vessel.
This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torch. Series resonant half-bridge topology is presented to be a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. The plasma torch rated for 3MW, 2kA and having the physical size of 1m long is selected to be a high enthalpy source in waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. Circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the existence of load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides high enough ignition voltage around 5KA during ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.
Non-equilibrium (irreversible) themodynamics is used to investigate colloidal back-diffusion during crossflow membrane filtration. The chemical potential is generalized as a superposition of equilibrium and irreversible contributions, originating from Brownian and shear-induced diffusion, respectively. As a result, an effective drag force is derived using the irreversible thermodynamics for a particle undergoing both Brownian and shear-induced diffusion in a sheared concentrated suspension. Using the drag force, a hydrodynamic force bias Monte Carlo method is developed for crossflow membrane filtration to determine the critical flux of hard sphere suspensions. Effects of shear rate and particle size on the critical flux are studied, and results show a good agreement with experimental observations reported in the literature.
A simple empirical model with good quantitative prediction of inter-particle and intra-particle distance in a cake layer with respect to ionic strength was developed. The model is an inverse length scale with functions of interaction energy and hydrodynamic factor and it explains that the inter-particle and intra-particle distance in a cake is directly related to the effective size of particles. Particle compressibility with respect to ionic strength was also predicted by the model. The model corroborated very well with experimental results of polystyrene microsphere latex particles microfiltation in a dead end operation. From the results of the model, specific cake resistance could be controlled by the same variables affecting the height of particle energy barrier described by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory.
For the purposes of drilling oil field and extracting oil deep water in more rough weather, the size of drilling rigs must be estimated. In this paper, the three dimensional source distribution method is used and we assume 10 deg. heeling and trimming condition of the drilling rig(SR-192). Also, the effects of the hydrodynamic forces which include the drift forces for field method, and the motion responses are studied with changing the incident wave direction in the assumed inclining condition. The theory and numerical codes used in this thesis appeared to be very useful for the preliminary design of drilling rigs.
Wireless magnet pumps are used in medical applications and are particularly useful as artificial heart ventricular assist devices (VADs). To investigate wireless operation of magnetic pumps, we fabricated three types of magnetic impellers using bonded magnets by blending magnetic powders of SmFeN, NdFeB, and Sr-ferrite. We investigated the magnetic properties of the fabricated magnetic impellers, which are driven by the application of magnetic coupling with an external driving magnet or external coil system, without a driving motor, shaft, or mechanical bearings. The use of wireless magnetic pumps is therefore not complicated by critical issues of size, heat, and vibration, which are very important issues for blood pumps. The magnetic properties of the impellers, such as their rotational speed, driving torque and hydrodynamic performance, determine their wireless driving ranges. We conducted performance evaluations of the impeller's magnetic wireless manipulation, heat, and vibration. In addition, we carried out an animal test to confirm the suitability of the wireless magnetic pumps for use as biventricular assist devices (BiVADs).
Wave overtopping is one of the most important hydraulic responses of breakwater because it significantly affects its functional efficiency, the safety of transit and mooring on the rear side, wave transmission in the sheltered area, rear side armor stones and to some extent, the structural safety itself. The hydrodynamic characteristics of low crest breakwater by the overtopping rate can be summarized as follows: 1. It is better to use maximum overtopping rate than to use mean overtopping rate for design of coastal structures. 2. Maximum overtopping rate was increase with wave steepness (between 0.01 and 0.02). 3. Overtopping rate is decreased when relation length of berm was over wave length.
