The calibrated Andong Reservoir hydro-dynamic module (PART I) of the 2-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 [v3.2], was applied to examine the dynamics of total phosphorus, and chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentration within Andong Reservoir. The modeling effort was supported with the data collected in the field for a five year period. In general, the model achieved a good accuracy throughout the calibration period for both chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ and total phosphorus concentration. The greatest deviation in algal concentration occurred on $10^{th}$ October, starting at the layer just beneath the surface layer and extending up to the depth of 35 m. This deviation is principally attributed to the effect of temperature on the algal growth rate. Also, on the same date, the model over-predicts hypolimnion and epilimnion total phosphorus concentration but under-predicts the high concentrated plume in the metalimnion. The large amount of upwelling of finer suspended solid particles, and re-suspension of the sediments laden with phosphorus, are thought to have caused high concentration in the epilimnion and hypolimnion, respectively. Nevertheless, the model well reproduced the seasonal dynamics of both chlorophyll a and total phosphorus concentration. Also, the model tracked the interflow of high phosphorus concentration plume brought by the turbid discharge during the Asian summer monsoon season. Two different hypothetical discharge scenarios (discharge from epilimnetic, and hypolimnetic layers) were analyzed to understand the response of total phosphorus interflow plume on the basis of differential discharge gate location. The simulated results showed that the hypolimnetic discharge gate operation ($103{\sim}113\;m$) was the most effective reservoir structural control method in quickly discharging the total phosphorus plume (decrease of in-reservoir concentration by 219% than present level).
In this paper, an integrated model for the wave (current)-induced seabed response is presented. The present model consists of two parts: hydrodynamic model for wave-current interactions and poro-elastic seabed model for pore accumulations. In the wave-current model, based on the fifth-order wave theory, ocean waves were generated by adding a source function into the mass conservation equation. Then, currents were simulated through imposing a steady inlet velocity on one domain and pressure outlet on the other side. In addition, both of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokers (RANS) Equations and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model would be applied in the fluid field. Once the wave pressures on the seabed calculated through the wave-current interaction model, it would be applied to be boundary conditions on the seabed model. In the seabed model, the poro-elastic theory would be imposed to simulate the seabed soil response. After comparing with the experimental data, the effect of currents on the seabed response would be examined by emphasize on the residual mechanisms of the pore pressure inside the soil. The build-up of the pore water pressure and the resulted liquefaction phenomenon will be fully investigated. A parametric study will also be conducted to examine the effects of waves and currents as well as soil properties on the pore pressure accumulation.

Non-contact type mechanical face seals installed in mechanical systems prevent leakage of working fluid using thin working fluid film between stator and rotor. For that purpose, various kinds of surface profiles, grooves and conings have been applied on seal surfaces of stator and rotor to generate hydrodynamic and hydrostatic pressure. The thickness distribution of working fluid film is one of important factors which affect the working performances of mechanical face seal, and it is strongly affected by the surface height profiles of stator and rotor. Therefore, appropriate design of surface height profiles of stator and rotor is necessary to optimize the working performances and life of mechanical face seal. In this study, numerical analysis using finite volume method was conducted to estimate the working performances of wavy mechanical face seals which have 36 coning combinations. As results, minimum thickness of working fluid film, leakage volume of working fluid and friction torque in static equilibrium condition of mechanical face seal, and stiffness of working fluid film were obtained. The results show that the working performances of mechanical face seal were affected by the coning combinations which can change the thickness distribution of working fluid film and pressure distribution in sealing region of mechanical face seal.

Water hammer pumps can effectively use the water hammer phenomenon in long-distance pipeline networks that include pumps and allow fluid transport without drive sources, such as electric motors. The results of experiments that examined the effect of the geometric form of water hammer pumps by considering their major dimensions have been reported. In addition, a paper has also been published analyzing the water hammer phenomenon numerically by using the characteristic curve method for comparison with experimental results. However, these conventional studies have not fully evaluated the pump performance in terms of pump head and flow rate, common measures indicating the performance of pumps. Therefore, as a first stage for the understanding of water hammer pump performance in comparison with the characteristics of typical turbo pumps, the previous paper experimentally examined how the hydrodynamic characteristics were affected by the inner diameter ratio of the drive and lifting pipes, the form of the air chamber, and the angle of the drive pipe. To understand the behavior of the components attached to the valve chamber and the air chamber that affects the performance of water hammer pumps, the previous study also determined the relationship between the water hammer pump performance and temporal changes in valve chamber and air chamber pressures according to the air chamber capacity. For the geometry of components attached to the drain valve, which is another major component of water hammer pumps, this study experimentally examines how the water hammer pump performance is affected by the length of the spring and the angle of the drain pipe.
Many successive liquid-liquid extractions occur enabling purification of the crude material to occur. In high performance counter-current chromatography (HPCCC), crude material is partitioned between two immiscible layers of solvent phases. The stationary phase (SP) is retained by hydrodynamic force field effect and the mobile phase (MP) is pumped through the column. Purification occurs because of the different solubility of the components in the liquid mobile and stationary phases. There are many key benefits of liquid stationary phases such as high mass and volume injection loadings, total sample recovery, and easy scale-up. Many researchers showed that predictable scale-up from simple test is feasible with knowledge of the stationary phase retention for the planned process scale run. In this review we review the recent advances in HPCCC research and also describe the key applications such as natural products and synthetics (small or large molecules).

Unlike spherical drop impact, ellipsoidal drop impact can control the bouncing height on a heated surface by significantly altering impact behavior. To scrutinize the effect of the aspect ratio (AR) of the drop on the bounce suppression, in this study, non-axisymmetric spreading behaviors are observed from two side views and characterized based on the spreading width of the drop for horizontal principal axes. In addition, the maximum spreading width is investigated for various ARs. The results show that as the AR increases, the maximum spreading width of the minor axis increases, whereas that of the major axis shows no significant variation. In the regime of high AR and high impact velocity, liquid fragmentations by three parts are observed during bouncing. These fragmentations are discussed in this work. The hydrodynamic features of ellipsoidal drop impact will help understand bouncing control on non-wetting surfaces for several applications, such as self-cleaning and spray cooling.
We carry out experiments to characterize textured bearing steel with varying hole density and depth. Textured surface is believed to reduce the friction coefficient, and improve performance and wearing caused by third-body contact. We employ three lubrication regime conditions based on the Stribeck curve: boundary lubrication, mixed lubrication, and hydrodynamic lubrication. Ultrasonic machining is an untraditional machining method wherein abrasive grit particles are used. The hammering process on the work piece surface by abrasive provides the desired form. In this study, we create multi-holes on the bearing steel surface for texturing purposes. Holes are formed by an ultrasonic machine with a diameter of 0.534 mm and a depth of about 2-4 mm, and they are distributed on the contact surface with a density between 1.37-2.23%. The hole density over the surface area is an important factor affecting the friction. We test nine types of textured specimens using four times replication and compare them with the untextured specimen using graphs, as well as photographs taken using a scanning electron microscope. We use Analyzes variant in this experiment to find the correlation between each pair of treatments. Finally, we report the effect of hole density and depth on the friction coefficient.
In this study, optimal parameters of diffusion-analogy GIUH were calculated by separating channel and hillslope from drainage structures in the basin. Parameters of the model were composed of channel and hillslope, each velocity($u_c$, $u_h$) and diffusion coefficient($D_c$, $D_h$). Tanbu subwatershed in Bocheong river basin as a target basin was classified as 4th rivers by Strahler's ordering scheme. The optimization technique was applied to the SCE-UA, the estimated optimal parameters are as follows. $u_c$ : 0.589 m/s, $u_h$ : 0.021 m/s, $D_c$ : $34.469m^2/s$, $D_h$ : $0.1333m^2/s$. As a verification for the estimated parameters, the error of average peak flow was about 11 % and the error of peaktime was 0.3 hr. By examining the variability of parameters, the channel diffusion coefficient didn't have significant effect on hydrological response function. by considering these results, the model is expected to be simplified in the future.
During the loading/offloading operation of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) that is moored in a side-by-side configuration with an offshore plant, sloshing that occurs due to the partially filled LNG tank and the interactive effect between the two floating bodies are important factors that affect safety and operability. Therefore, a time-domain software program, called CHARM3D, was developed to consider the interactions between sloshing and the motion of a floating body, as well as the interactions between multiple bodies using the potential-viscous hybrid method. For the simulation of a floating body in the time domain, hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces were calculated in the frequency domain using the 3D radiation/diffraction panel program based on potential theory. The calculated values were used for the simulation of a floating body in the time domain by convolution integrals. The liquid sloshing in the inner tanks is solved by the 3D-FDM Navier-Stokes solver that includes the consideration of free-surface non-linearity through the SURF scheme. The computed sloshing forces and moments were fed into the time integration of the ship's motion, and the updated motion was, in turn, used as the excitation force for liquid sloshing, which is repeated for the ensuing time steps. For comparison, a sloshing motion coupled analysis program based on linear potential theory in the frequency domain was developed. The computer programs that were developed were applied to the side-by-side offloading operation between the offshore plant and the LNGC. The frequency-domain results reproduced the coupling effects qualitatively, but, in general, the peaks were over-predicted compared to experimental and time-domain results. The interactive effects between the sloshing liquid and the motion of the vessel can be intensified further in the case of multiple floating bodies.
This study evaluates the effect of grooves on the stem part of a plunger on the lubrication characteristics of a fuel injection pump (FIP) by using hydrodynamic lubrication analysis. The current study uses the two-dimensional Reynolds equation to evaluate the changes in lubrication characteristics with variations in clearance, viscosity, and grooves for a laminar, incompressible, and unsteady state flow. This study investigates the lubrication characteristics by comparing the dimensionless minimum film thickness or the film parameter, which is the ratio of the minimum film thickness to surface roughness. The analysis method for the groove section differs depending on the depth of the groove. For instance, in the case of a shallow groove, the film thickness equation considers the depth of the groove, while in the case of a deep grove, it considers the flow continuity. The lubrication characteristics of the FIP are more sensitive to changes in the groove width than to changes in other design variables. Moreover, the application of a groove is more effective under low viscosity conditions. The smaller the distance from the edge of the stem part to the first groove in the case of shallow grooves, the better are the lubrication characteristics of the FIP. In contrast, in the case of deep grooves, the lubrication characteristics of the FIP improve as the distance increases. The application of shallow grooves is more effective for improving the lubrication characteristics than the application of deep grooves.
