Experimental Study on Regenerator Under Cryogenic Temperature and Pulsating Pressure Conditions (극저온 맥동 압력 조건에서의 재생기에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental apparatus was prepared to investigate thermal and hydrodynamic characteristics of regenerator at cryogenic temperature under pulsating pressure condition. The regenerator was pressurized and depressurized by a compressor with various operating frequencies. Cold end of the regenerator was maintained around 100 K by means of a liquid nitrogen heat exchanger. Instantaneous gas temperature and mass flow rate were measured at both ends of the regenerator during the whole pressure cycle. Pulsating pressure drop across the regenerator was also measured to see if it could be predicted by a friction factor at steady flow condition. The operating frequency of pressure cycle was varied between 3 and 60 Hz, which are typical operating frequencies of Gifford-McMahon, pulse tube, and Stilting cryocoolers. First, the measured friction factor for typical wire screen mesh regenerator was nearly same as steady flow friction factor for maximum oscillating Reynolds number up to 100 at less than 9 Hz. For 60 Hz operations, however, the discrepancy between oscillating flow friction factor and steady flow one was noticeable if Reynolds number was higher than 50. Second, the ineffectiveness of regenerator was directly calculated from experimental data when the cold-end was maintained around 100 K and the warm-end around 293 K, which simulates an actual operating condition of cryogenic regenerator. Influence of the operating frequency on ineffectiveness was discussed at low frequency range.

Optimizing the Configurations of Cooling Channels with Low Flow Resistance and Thermal Resistance (냉각유로 형상변화에 따른 유동 및 열저항 최적화 연구)

  • In this study, we investigated the hydrodynamic and thermal performance of constructal architectures on the basis of the mass flow rates for a given pressure drop, and we determined the thermal resistance and flow uniformity. The five flow configuration used in this study were the first construct with optimized hydraulic diameter, the second construct with optimized hydraulic diameter, the first construct with non-optimized hydraulic diameter, second construct with non-optimized hydraulic diameter, and a serpentine configuration. The results of our study suggest that the best fluid-flow structure is the second constructal structure with optimized constructal configurations. We also found that in the case of the optimized structure of cooling plates, the heat transfer was remarkably higher and the pumping power was significantly lower than those of traditional channels.

CFD Analysis on the Flow Characteristics of Ejector According to the Position Changes of Driving Nozzle for F.W.G (수치해석을 이용한 담수장치용 이젝터의 노즐위치 변화에 따른 이젝터 유동특성 연구)

  • In this study, the ejector design was modeled using Fluent 6.3 of FVM(Finite Volume Method) CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) techniques to resolve the flow dynamics in the ejector. A vacuum system with the ejector has been widely used because of its simple construction and easy maintenance. Ejector is the main part of the desalination system, of which designs determine the efficiency of system. The effects of the ejector was investigated geometry and the operating conditions in the hydraulic characteristics. The ejector consists mainly of a nozzle, suction chamber, mixing tube (throat), diffuser and draft tube. Liquid is supplied to the ejector nozzle, the fast liquid jet produced by the nozzle entrains and the non condensable gas was sucked into the mixing tube. The multiphase CFD modeling was carried out to determine the hydrodynamic characteristics of seawater-air ejector. Condition of the simulation was varied in entrance mass flow rate (1kg/s, 1.5kg/s, 2kg/s, 2.5kg/s, 3kg/s), and position of driving nozzle was located from the central axis of the suction at -10mm, 0mm, 10mm, 20mm, 30mm.. Asaresult, suction flow velocity has the highest value in central axis of the suction.

Analysis of Dynamic Behavior of Flexible Rectangular Liquid Containers by the Coupled Boundary Element-Finite Element Method (경계요소-유한요소 연계법에 의한 구형 수조구조물의 동적거동 특성해석)

  • Dynamic behavior of flexible rectangular liquid containers is analyzed by a two-dimensional coupled boundary element-finite element method. The irrotational motion of inviscid and incompressible ideal fluid is modeled by boundary elements and the motion of structure by finite elements. A singularity free integral formulation is employed for the implementation of boundary element method. Coupling is performed by using compatibility and equilibrium conditions along the interface between the fluid and structure. The fluid-structure interaction effects are reflected into the coupled equation of motion as added fluid mass matrix and sloshing stiffness matrix. By solving the eigen-problem for the coupled equation of motion, natural frequencies and mode shapes of coupled system are obtained. The free surface sloshing motion and hydrodynamic pressure developed in a flexible rectangular container due to horizontal and vertical ground motions are computed in time domain.

Seismic and Structure Analysis of a Temporary Rack Construction in a Nuclear Power Plant (원자력 발전소 공사용 임시받침대의 내진 및 구조해석)

  • In this study, the safety of a rack structure was evaluated through seismic analysis considering fluid-structure interactions using a finite-element model. The rack structure was immersed under water, so it was influenced by the water. The fluid-structure interaction can be specified in terms of the hydrodynamic effect, which is defined as the added mass per unit length. Modal analysis and seismic analysis using the Floor Response Spectrum (FRS) were carried out under Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) conditions. The analytical maximum displacements of the rack structure were 0.29 and 0.36 mm under OBE and SSE conditions, respectively. The maximum stresses were 17.9 MPa under OBE conditions and 19.6 MPa under SSE conditions; these results corresponded to 23 % and 14% of the yield strength of the applied material, respectively.

  • The cylindrical Upper Guide Structure assembly of the reactor intervals wish the Core Support Barrel and the Inner Barrel Assembly is subjected to flow induced loads horizontally which include random pressure fluctuation due to turbulent flow and pump pulsation pressures. The purpose of this papers is to perform random vibration and harmonic response analyses fort flow induced loads. The dynamic response characteristics due to random turbulence and pump pulsation loads were evaluated using the lumped mass beam model. Especially the model considered the annulus effects due to water gaps existing between cylindrical structures such as the Upper Guide Structure Barrel, the Core Support Barrel, and the Inner Barrel Assembly. The effect of the Inner Barrel Assembly inside the Upper Guide Structure assembly was studied. The peak dynamic responses lot each loading condition due to the addition of IBA were affected by the natural frequencies of the structures. Therefore the peak dynamic responses of the structures should be conservatively obtained from evaluation of dynamic analysis for various loading conditions.

Destruction of Giant Molecular Clouds by UV Radiation Feedback from Massive Stars

  • Star formation in galaxies predominantly takes place in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). While it is widely believed that UV radiation feedback from young massive stars can destroy natal GMCs by exciting HII regions and driving their expansion, our understanding on how this actually occurs remains incomplete. To quantitatively assess the effect of UV radiation feedback on cloud disruption, we conduct a series of theoretical studies on the dynamics of HII regions and its role in controlling the star formation efficiency (SFE) and lifetime of GMCs in a wide range of star-forming environments. We first develop a semi-analytic model for the expansion of spherical dusty HII regions driven by the combination of gas and radiation pressures, finding that GMCs in normal disk galaxies are destroyed by gas-pressure driven expansion with SFE < 10%, while more dense and massive clouds with higher SFE are disrupted primarily by radiation pressure. Next, we turn to radiation hydrodynamic simulations of GMC dispersal to allow for self-consistent star formation as well as inhomogeneous density and velocity structures arising from supersonic turbulence. For this, we develop an efficient parallel algorithm for ray tracing method, which enables us to probe a range of cloud masses and sizes. Our parameter study shows that the net SFE, lifetime (measured in units of free-fall time), and the importance of radiation pressure (relative to photoionization) increase primarily with the initial surface density of the cloud. Unlike in the idealized spherical model, we find that the dominant mass loss mechanism is photoevaporation rather than dynamical ejection and that a significant fraction of radiation escapes through low optical-depth channels.   • A floating crane is a crane-mounted ship and is used to assemble or to transport heavy blocks in shipyards. In this paper, the static and dynamic response of a floating crane and a heavy block that are connected using elastic booms and wire ropes are described. The static and dynamic equations of surge, pitch, and heave for the system are derived on the basis of flexible multibody system dynamics. The equations of motion are fully coupled and highly nonlinear since they involve nonlinear mass matrices, elastic stiffness matrices, quadratic velocity vectors, and generalized external forces. A floating frame of reference and nodal coordinates are employed to model the boom as a flexible body. The nonlinear hydrostatic force, linear hydrodynamic force, wire-rope force, and mooring force are considered as the external forces. For numerical analysis, the Hilber-Hughes-Taylor method for implicit integration is used. The dynamic responses of the cargo are analyzed with respect to the results obtained by static and numerical analyses.

Fragility Assessment of Offshore Wind Turbine by Ship Collision (선박충돌에 의한 해상풍력발전기의 취약도 평가)

  • Offshore wind turbines has to be proved against accidental events such as ship collision. In this study, ship collision fragility analysis of offshore wind turbine is done. Dynamic collision analysis is accomplished by considering soil foundation interaction and fluid structure interaction. Uncertainties due to ship weight and speed, angle are also considered. By analyzing dynamic response of offshore wind turbine, fragility curves are obtained for different damage levels. They can be used for restricting boat speed around the wind turbine and allowable size of the boat for inspection and for other purposes. Results of the fragility, it was confirmed fragility of collision speed of bulk ship of 30,000DWT and 850ton barge ship.

Natural Frequency of 2-Dimensional Cylinders in Heaving; Frequency-Domain Analysis (상하동요하는 2차원 주상체의 고유진동수; 주파수 영역 해석)

  • Following the previous works on the natural frequency of heaving circular cylinder, i.e. Lee and Lee (2013) and Kim and Lee (2013), an investigation of the same spirit on the 2-dimensional cylinder of Lewis form has been conducted. As before, the natural frequency is defined as that corresponding to the local maximum of the MCFR (Modulus of Complex Frequency Response), which is given by the equation of motion in the frequency domain analysis. Hydrodynamic coefficients were found by using the Ursell-Tasai method, and numerical results for them were obtained up to much higher frequencies than before, for which the method was known as numerically unstable in the past. For a wide range of H, the beam-draft ratio, and ${\sigma}$, the sectional area coefficient, including their practical ranges for a ship, results for the natural frequency were computed and presented in this work. Two approximate values for the natural frequency, one proposed by Lee (2008) and another one by the damped harmonic oscillator, were also compared with the current results, and for most cases it was observed that the current result is between the two values. Our numerical results showed that the values of the local maximum of MCFR as well as the natural frequencye increase as ${\sigma}$ increases while H decreases. At present, extension of the present finding to the 3-dimensional ship via the approximate theory like the strip method looks promising.
