Using gas chromatography, the light hydrocarbon emissions were analyzed from SI engine fueled with methane and liquified petroleum gas(LPG), and the effects of fuel and engine operating condition were discussed. For this purpose, 14 species of light hydrocarbon including 1, 3-butadiene were separated, calibrated with standard gas, and measured from undiluted emissions. The brake specific hydrocarbon emission(BSHC) and ozone forming potential(BSO)3 were calculated and discussed with the changes of fuel, engine speed, load, fuel/air equivalence ratio, coolant temperature, and spark timing. As a result, exhaust emission was composed of mainly fuel composed of mainly fuel comp- onent and other olefin components of similar carbon number. The olefin components such as ethylene and propylene determine most of the ozone forming potential. The fraction of fuel component in total hydrocarbon emission was bigger with methane fuel than with LPG fuel. Also fuel fraction increased at high speed or high speed or high temperature of exhaust gas, and to lesser extent with high coolant temperature and retarded spark. However, the effect of equivalence ratio had different tendency according to fuels.

Environmentally friendly refrigerants with zero ozone layer depletion potential are required to be used in refrigerators and air conditioners due to the difficulties related to ozone layer depletion and global warming. A rigorous study for the system performance with new refrigerants having zero ozone layer depletion potential is inevitable before adopting that as a new fluid. The HFC(Hydrofluorocarbon) potential has been recommended as alternatives. In this paper. system performance in the heat pump facilities were studied using R-290, R-600a. R-1270 as an environment friendly refrigerant. R-22 as a HCFC's refrigerant. The experimental apparatus has been set-up as a conventional vapor compression type heat Pump system. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. A tube diameter of 12.70mm with 1.315mm wall thickness is used for this investigation. The test results showed that the COP of hydrocarbon refrigerants were superior to that of R-22 and the maximum increasing rate of COP was found in R-1270. The refrigeration capacity of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. The compressor work was obtained with the maximum value in R-1270 and the minimum one in R-22.
The smoke emission of diesel engines is being recognized as one of the major source of the air pollution problems. This study investigates the potential of esterified rice bran oil to reduce smoke emission as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. Because the esterified rice bran oil has approximately a 10.5% oxygen content, the combustion of the diesel engine improved and exhaust smoke decreased. Gas chromatography was used to analyze not only the total amount of hydrocarbon but also the amount of hydrocarbon components from $C_1$ to $C_6$ in the exhaust gas to determine an exact source responsible for the remarkable reduction in the smoke emission. The number of individual hydrocarbon($C_1{\sim}C_6$) as well as the total amount of hydrocarbon of esterified rice bran oil reduced significantly compared to that of hydrocarbon of diesel fuel.

The adhesion of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria(HDB) differing in surface hydrophobicity was investigated. Cell wall hydrophobicity was modified chemically and physiologically. Modified adhesion deficient mutant of HDB was selected in a soil column assay Physiologically and chemical modification increased cell surface hydrophobicity. Cell surface charcteristis including BATH and zeta potential were measured. Physiological modification using ampicillin was not stable, but chemical modification was stabel. Hydrocarbon degrading potential was measured for modified and unmodifed HDB.
The timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion from source rocks can be evaluated by reconstructing the geohistory of the basin using petroleum system modeling. The Tyee basin is generally considered having a high hydrocarbon generation potential For the southern part of the basin, the basin evolution from a structural and stratigraphic points of view, the thermal history, and the burial history were reconstructed and simulated using numerical tools of basin modeling. An evaluation of organic geochemistry for the potential source rocks and the possible petroleum systems were analysed to improve the understanding of the hydrocarbon charge of the basin. Organic geochemical data indicate that the undifferentiated Umpqua Group, mudstones of the Klamath Mountains, and coals and carbonaceous mudstones in the Remote Member and the Coquille River Member are the most potential gas-prone source rocks in the basin. The relatively high maturity of the southern Tyee basin is related to deep burial resulting from loading by the Coos bay strata. And the heating by intrusion from the western Cascade arc also affects to the high maturity of the basin. The maturation of source rocks, the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion were evaluated by means of basin modeling. The modeling results reveal that the hydrocarbon was generated in all potential source rocks and an expulsion only occurred from the Remote Member.
In order to evaluate the potential of partial hydrocarbon substitution to improve the safety of hydrogen use in general and the performance of internal combustion engines in particular, the outward propagation and development of surface cellular instability of spark-ignited spherical premixed flames of mixtures of hydrogen, hydrocarbon, and air were experimentally studied at NTP (normal temperature and pressure) condition in a constant-pressure combustion chamber. With propane being the substituent, the laminar burning velocities, the Markstein lengths, and the propensity of cell formation were experimentally determined, while the laminar burning velocities and the associated flame thicknesses were computed using a recent kinetic mechanism. Results show substantial reduction of laminar burning velocities with propane substitution, and support the potential of propane as a suppressant of both diffusional-thermal and hydrodynamic cellular instabilities in hydrogen-air flames.
Piston cores retrieved from the western Ulleung Basin, East Sea were analyzed to examine the potential for hydrocarbon generation and to determine the hydrocarbon indicators. 2D multi-channel reflection seismic and Chirp data were also investigated for mapping and characterizing the geophysical hydrocarbon indicators such as BSR (bottom simulating reflector), blank zone, pock-mark etc. High organic carbon contents and sedimentation rates that suggest good condition for hydrocarbon generation. High pressure and low temperature condition, and high residual hydrocarbon concentrations are favor the formation of natural gas hydrate. In the piston cores, cracks generally oriented to bedding may indicate the gas expansion. The seismic data show several BSRs that are associated with natural gas hydrates and underlying free gas. A number of vertical to sub-vertical blank zones were well identified in the seismic sections. They often show the seismic pull-up structures, probably indicating the presence of high velocity hydrates. Numerous pockmarks were also observed in the Chirp profiles. They may indicate the presence of free gas below the hydrate stability zone as well.
Because the exhaust emissions from automobiles are increased, our environment is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized main cause which influenced environment strong. Lots of researcher have been attempted to develop various alternative fuel on purpose to reduce these harmful emissions. In this study, the potential possibility of esterfied rice bran oil which is a kind of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for diesel engine. And, we tried to analysis not only total hydrocarbon but hydrocarbon components from $C_1$ to $C_6$ in exhaust gas using gas chromatography to seek the reason for remarkable reduction of exhaust emission. Individual hydrocarbon$(C_1\simC_6)$ as well as total hydrocarbon of biodiesel fuel is reduced remarkably than that of diesel fuel in this experiment.

In this digest, we briefly review our current molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that utilize both the reactive empirical bond order potential (REBO) and the adaptive intermolecular REBO (AIREBO) potential energy functions. The AIREBO potential includes intermolecular interactions, so that self·assembled monolayers, and liquids, can be modeled. We have examined the mechanical and tribological properties of model self assembled monolayers and amorphous carbon films. Self-assembled monolayers are modeled by covalently bonding hydrocarbon chains to diamond substrates. Because the REBO potentials can model chemical reactions, specific compression and sliding induced chemical reactions were identified.
Piston cores retrieved from the eastern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed to access the potential of hydrocarbon gas generation and natural gas hydrate (NGH) formation. Seismic data acquired in the study area were also analyzed to determine the presence of hydrocarbon gas and/or NGH, and to map their distribution. Core analyses revealed high total organic carbon (TOC) contents which favor hydrocarbon generation. The cores recovered from the southern study area showed the sufficient residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of significant NGH. These cores also showed the cracks developed parallel to the bedding that suggest significant gas content in situ. A number of seismic blanking zones were observed on seismic data. They are identified as vertical to sub-vertical chimneys caused by the upward migration of pore fluid or gas, and containing of free gas and/or NGH. Often, they are associated with velocity pull-up structures that are interpreted to be the result of high-velocity NGH. The seismic data also showed several bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) that are associated with overlying NGH and underlying free gas. The distribution of blanking zones and BSRs would be impacted by the lateral differences of upward methane fluxes.
