A computational method is developed for predicting the steady-state temperature field in an LMR core. Detailed core-wide coolant temperature profiles are efficiently calculated using the simplified energy equation mixing model[1] and the subchannel analysis method. The $\theta$-method is employed for discretizing the energy equations in the axial direction. The interassembly coupling is achieved by interassembly gap flow. Cladding and fuel temperatures are calculated with the one-dimensional conduction model and temperature integrals of conductivities. The accuracy of the method is tested by performing several benchmark calculations for too LMR problems. The results indicate that the accuracy is comparable to the other methods based on ENERGY model. It is also shown that the implicit scheme for the axial discretization is more efficient than the explicit scheme.
A good understanding of the interaction between flow, vegetation, and sediment is required for successful river restoration and sustainable flood management. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of available methods to determine flow resistance of natural rivers with vegetation, and discuss the influence of vegetation on erosion and sedimentation processes. Recently, significant advances have been made, but the effects of vegetation on flow and sediment dynamics are still not fully understood. Possible solutions to close the gaps in the current knowledge are suggested, with special focus directed to the determination of the interactive width between main channel and vegetated floodplains, the flow resistance of flexible vegetation with and without leaves, and the flow over submerged vegetation with low water depth.
Despite extensive research efforts, the mechanism of the nucleate boiling phenomena is still not clear. A direct numerical simulation of the boiling phenomena is one of the promising approaches in order to clarify its heat transfer characteristics and discuss their mechanism. Therefore, many DNS procedures have been developed based on recent highly advancing computer technologies. This brief review focuses on the state of the art in direct numerical simulation of the pool boiling phenomena over the past two decades. In this review, the fundamentals of the boiling phenomena and the bubble departure and micro-layer models are briefly introduced, and then the numerical procedures for tracking or capturing interface/surface shape such as the front tracking method, level set method, volume of fluid treatments, and other methods (Lattice Boltzmann method, phase-field method and so on) are briefly reviewed.
This paper present a procedure of meter-out flow control method for dump valve in full-scale airframe test. Emergency stop, which results in dump state, can be happened during full-scale airframe test by several causes. Because servo valve can't control hydraulics actuator in the dump state, pressure in cylinder chamber may rise abruptly and overload can be acted to the test article. In this paper, the procedure and technology of orifice setting are investigated to protect the test article from unexpected loads by dump. The test results show that the presented methods decrease peak loads and improve unloading characteristics of hydraulic actuators in the dump state.

New generation nuclear reactors are designed using advanced safety analysis methods. A thorough understanding of different interacting physical phenomena is necessary to avoid underestimation and overestimation of consequences of off-normal transients in the reactor safety analysis results. This feature requires a multiphysics reactor simulation model. In this context, a coupled dynamics model based on a multiphysics formulation is developed indigenously for the transient analysis of large pressurized VVER reactors. Major simplifications are employed in the model by making several assumptions based on the physics of individual phenomenon. Space and time grids are optimized to minimize the computational bulk. The capability of the model is demonstrated by solving a series of international (AER) benchmark problems for VVER reactors. The developed model was used to analyze a number of reactivity transients that are likely to occur in VVER reactors.
This paper proposes the adoption of Monte Carlo perturbation theory to approximate the Jacobian matrix of coupled neutronics/thermal-hydraulics problems. The projected Jacobian is obtained from the eigenvalue decomposition of the fission matrix, and it is adopted to solve the coupled problem via the Newton method. This avoids numerical differentiations commonly adopted in Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov methods that tend to become expensive and inaccurate in the presence of Monte Carlo statistical errors in the residual. The proposed approach is presented and preliminarily demonstrated for a simple two-dimensional pressurized water reactor case study.

This study investigated the predicted and abserved outflow of groundwater which occurred during tunnel constructions. Among the 586 road construction projects from 1986 to 2006, 4 route 25 tunnel construction areas and 26 waste water treatment facilities under construction were studied. Most of the tunnel outflow prediction in EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) process have been classified into the 17 types of units depending on the assessor's options, which have not conformed to the request of the residents and non government organizations. The investigation results showed that the outflow of underground water in tunnel construction areas averaged about $0.133m^3/km{\cdot}min$ with the maximum $0.386m^3/km{\cdot}min$, and that the outflow mostly occurred in the early stage of tunnel excavation and diminished gradually. The prediction of outflow of underground water in the EIA process showed excessive results compared to observed outflow, the even 51.7 times. Consequently for more realistic prediction, current EIA method for prediction of outflow of underground water in tunnel construction areas has to adopt numerical methods coupled with hydraulics and geologic informations from unit methods of present time.

An electro-hydraulic manipulator using hydraulic actuators has many nonlinear elements, and its parameter fluctuations are greater than those of an electrically driven manipulator. So it is relatively difficult to obtain stable control performance. In this report, we applied disturbance estimation and compensation type robust control to all axes in a 3-link electro-hydraulic manipulator. From the results of experiment, it was confirmed that the performance of trajectory tracking and attitude regulating is greatly improved by the disturbance observer, which model is the same for each axis. On the other hand, for the autonomous assembly tasks, it is said that compliance control is one of the most available methods. Therefore we proposed compliance control which is based on the position control by disturbance observer for our manipulator system. To realize more stable contact work, the states in the compliance loop are feedback, where not only displacement but also velocity and acceleration are considered. And we applied this compliance control to Peg-in-Hole insertion task and analyzed mechanical relation between peg and hole. Also we proposed new method of shifting the position of end-effector periodically for the purpose of smooth insertion. As a result of using this method, it is experimentally confirmed that Peg-in-Hole insertion task with a clearance of 0.05[mm]can be achieved.

System thermal-hydraulic codes have been used in the past decades in the areas of design, operation, licensing and safety of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). The development and validation of these codes have reached a high degree of maturity, through the consideration of huge experiments and advanced numerical models. Nowadays, the analyses are based upon realistic approaches rather than the conservative evaluation models. However the applications of these computational tools require preliminary qualification issues. Although huge amounts of financial and human resources have been invested for the development and improvement of codes, the calculation results are still affected by errors. In the sophisticated nuclear technology, design and safety of NPP, these errors must be quantified. An overview of the state of the art of the current thermal-hydraulic system code is developed and the need of uncertainty analysis in code calculations is emphasized. Several sources of uncertainty have been classified and commented, and typical applications of such methods are shown.
