The applicability of in situ biobarrier or microbial filter technology for the remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvent was investigated through column study. In this study, the effect of packing materials on the reductive dechlorination of PCE was investigated using Canadian peat, Pahokee peat, peat moss and vermicompost (or worm casting) as a biobarrier medium. Optimal conditions previously determined from a batch microcosm study was applied in this column study. Lactate/benzoate was amended as electron donors to stimulate reductive dechlorination of PCE. Hydraulic conductivity was approximately $6{\times}10^{-5}-8{\times}10^{-5}\;cm/sec$ and no difference was found among the packing materials. The transport and dispersion coefficients determined from the curve-fitting of the breakthrough curves of $Br^-$ using CXTFIT 2.1 showed no difference between single-region and two-region models. The reductive dechlorination of PCE was efficiently occurred in all columns. Among the columns, especially the column packed with vermicompost exhibited the highest reductive dechlorination efficiency. The results of this study showed the promising potential of in situ biobarrier technology using peat and vermicompost for the remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents.
The present study numerically investigates the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rib-induced secondary flow in a cooling channel with staggered V-shaped ribs, extruded on both walls. The rib-height-to-hydraulic diameter ration (h/$D_h$) is 0.17; the rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/h) equals 2.8; the Reynolds number is 50,000. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. The present results are compared with those for a continuous V-shaped rib. Computational results show that, for average heat transfer rate the staggered V-shaped rib gives about 2.5 times higher values than the continuous V-shaped rib, while, for the streamwise pressure drop the former gives about 5 times higher values than the latter. Consequently, for the thermal performances, based on the equal pumping power condition, the staggered one gives about 2 times higher values than the continuous one. Also, for the staggered V-shaped rib, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to the snaking flow in the streamwise direction, and more uniform heat transfer distributions are obtained.
Thermalhydraulic reactor simulation of tomorrow will require a new generation of codes combining at least three scales, the CFD scale in open medium, the component scale and the system scale. DNS will be used as a support for modelling more macroscopic models. NEPTUNE is such a new generation multi-scale platform developed jointly by CEA-DEN and EDF-R&D and also supported by IRSN and FRAMATOME-ANP. The major steps towards the next generation lie in new physical models and improved numerical methods. This paper presents the advances obtained so far in physical modelling for each scale. Macroscopic models of system and component scales include multi-field modelling, transport of interfacial area, and turbulence modelling. Two-phase CFD or CMFD was first applied to boiling bubbly flow for departure from nucleate boiling investigations and to stratified flow for pressurised thermal shock investigations. The main challenges of the project are presented, some selected results are shown for each scale, and the perspectives for future are also drawn. Direct Numerical Simulation tools with Interface Tracking Techniques are also developed for even smaller scale investigations leading to a better understanding of basic physical processes and allowing the development of closure relations for macroscopic and CFD models.
Groundwater flow in fractured rocks generates many challenging problems to scientist and engineers in the projects related to oil and geothermal reservoirs, subsurface contaminations and underground openings. To circumvent these problems, the numerical simulation of groundwater system is used as an established tool in these days. Discrete modelling approach emphasizes geometric parameters, aperture and transport properties of fracture. On the other hand, continuum modelling approach uses the parameters formulated in a way of average hydraulic property. In recent years, the results of field observations from underground opening indicate that groundwater in rock mass flows in a channel form. The channel flow is postulated as the result of the combined effects of geometric pattern and aperture variation.
A case study is presented where a fluvial system is modeled in three dimensions and compared to data gathered from a study of the Arkansas River. The data is unique in that it documents changes that affected a straight channel that was excavated within the river by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Excavation plan maps and sequential aerial photographs show that the channel underwent massive deposition and channel migration as it returned to a more natural, meandering path. These records illustrate that stability of fluvial system can be disrupted either by catastrophic events such as floods or by subtle events such as the altering of a stream's equilibrium base level or sediment load. SEDSIM, Stanford's Sedimentary Basin Simulation Model, is modified and used to model the Arkansas River and the geologic processes that changed in response to changing hydraulic and geologic parameters resulting from the excavation of the channel. Geologic parameters such as fluid and sediment discharge, velocity, transport capacity, and sediment load are input into the model. These parameters regulate the frequency distribution and sizes of sediment grains that are eroded, transported and deposited. The experiments compare favorably with field data, recreating similar patterns of fluid flow and sedimentation. Therefore, simulations provide insight for understanding and spatial distribution of sediment bodies in fluvial deposits and the internal sedimentary structure of fluvial reservoirs. These techniques of graphic simulation can be contributed to support the development of the new design criteria compatible with natural stream processes, espacially drainage problem to minimize environmental disruption.

For the SAT modeling system considering the reaction module which consists of nitrification, denitrification and organic oxidation, an imaginary cross-sectional 2-dimensional model simulation was carried out to analyze the sensitivity of the model. Four parameters, such as hydraulic conductivity, source water loading rate, ground surface pavement and operation schedule, were considered for the sensitivity analysis. Most factors considered in model development step were well reflected in the simulation results.
The force of a direct current (DC) electromagnetic pump used to transport liquid lithium was analyzed to optimize its geometrical and electrical parameters by numerical simulation. In a heavy-ion accelerator, which is being developed in Korea, a liquid lithium film is utilized for its high charge-stripping efficiency for heavy ions of uranium. A DC electromagnetic pump with a flow rate of $6cm^3/s$ and a developed pressure of 1.5 MPa at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ was required to circulate the liquid lithium to form liquid lithium films. The current and magnetic flux densities in the flow gap, where a $Sm_2Co_{17}$ permanent magnet was used to generate a magnetic field, were analyzed for the electromagnetic force distribution generated in the pump. The pressure developed by the Lorentz force on the electromagnetic force was calculated by considering the electromotive force and hydraulic pressure drop in the narrow flow channel. The opposite force at the end part due to the magnetic flux density in the opposite direction depended on the pump geometrical parameters such as the pump duct length and width that defines the rectangular channels in the nonhomogeneous distributions of the current and magnetic fields.
In offshore engineering, lateral cyclic loading may induce excessive lateral movement and bending strain in pile foundations. Previous studies mainly focused on deformation mechanisms of single piles due to lateral cyclic loading. In this paper, centrifuge model tests were conducted to investigate the response of a $2{\times}2$ pile group due to lateral cyclic loading in clay. After applying each loading-unloading cycle, the pile group cannot move back to its original location. It implies that residual movement and bending strain are induced in the pile group. This is because cyclic loading induces plastic deformation in the soil surrounding the piles. As the cyclic load increases from 62.5 to 375 kN, the ratio of the residual to the maximum pile head movements varies from 0.30 to 0.84. Moreover, the ratio of the residual to the maximum bending strains induced in the piles is in a range of 0.23 to 0.82. The bending strain induced in the front pile is up to 3.2 times as large as that in the rear pile. Thus, much more protection measures should be applied to the front piles to ensure the serviceability and safety of pile foundations.

This paper presents a high-efficiency design technique for developing the serialized models of a single-channel pump based on the diameter, flow rate and head as the main performance parameters. The variation in pump performance by changing of the single-channel pump geometry was predicted based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Numerical analysis was conducted by solving three-dimensional steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The tendencies of the hydraulic performance depending on the pump geometry scale were analyzed with the fixed rotational speed. These performances were expressed and evaluated as the functionalization for designing the serialized models of a single-channel pump in this work.

Bentonite is the most probable candidate to be used as a buffer in a deep geological repository with high swelling properties, hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, and radionuclide sorption ability. Among them, the radionuclide sorption ability prevents or delays the transport of radionuclides into the nearby environment when an accident occurs and the radionuclide leaks from the canister, so it needs to be strengthened in terms of long-term disposal safety. Here, we proposed a surface modification method in which some inorganic additives were added to form NaP zeolite on the surface of the bentonite yielded at Yeonil, South Korea. We confirmed that the NaP zeolite was well-formed on the bentonite surface, which also increased the sorption efficiency of Cs and Sr from groundwater conditions. Both NaP and NaX zeolite can be produced and we have demonstrated that the generation mechanism of NaX and NaP is due to the number of homogeneous/heterogeneous nucleation sites and the number of nutrients supplied from an aluminosilicate gel during the surface modification process. This study showed the potential of surface modification on bentonite to enhance the safety of deep geological radioactive waste repository by improving the radionuclide sorption ability of bentonite.
