A bi-modal tram has been developed to offer an advanced transportation service compared with existing vehicles. The All-Wheel-Steering system is applied to the bi-modal tram to satisfy the required steering performance because the bi-modal tram has extended length and articulated mechanism. An ECU for the steering system is essential to steer wheels on 2nd and 3rd axles by the specific AWS algorithm with the prescribed driving condition. The Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation(HILS) system is planned for the purpose of evaluating the steering system of the bi-modal tram. There are kinematic links with the hydraulic actuator to steer wheels on each 2nd and 3rd axles and also same steering mechanism as the actual vehicle is in the HILS system. Controlling the movement of hydraulic actuator which reflects the lateral steering reaction force on each wheel is the key to realize the HILS system, but the reaction force is continuously changed according to various driving conditions. Therefore, the simulation through the multi-body dynamics model is used to obtain the required forces.
The pressurized light water cooled, medium power (330 MWt) SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) has been under development at KAERI for a dual purpose : seawater desalination and electricity generation. The SMART design verification phase was followed to conduct various separate effects tests and comprehensive integral effect tests. The high temperature / high pressure thermal-hydraulic test facility, VISTA(Experimental Verification by Integral Simulation of Transient and Accidents) has been constructed to simulate the SMART-P (the one fifth scaled pilot plant) by KAERI. Experimental tests have been performed to investigate the thermal-hydraulic dynamic characteristics of the primary and the secondary systems. Heat transfer characteristics and natural circulation performance of the PRHRS (Passive Residual Heat Removal System) of SMART-P were also investigated using the VISTA facility. The coolant flows steadily in the natural circulation loop which is composed of the steam generator (SG) primary side, the secondary system, and the PRHRS. The heat transfers through the PRHRS heat exchanger and ECT are sufficient enough to enable the natural circulation of the coolant.
The pressurized water reactor APR1400 adopts DVI (Direct Vessel Injection) for the emergency cooling water in the upper downcomer annulus. The International Standard Problem number 50 (ISP-50) was launched with the aim to investigate thermal hydraulic phenomena during a 50% DVI line break scenario with best estimate codes making use of the experimental data available from the ATLAS facility located at KAERI. The present work describes the calculation results obtained for the ISP-50 using the RELAP5/MOD3.3 system code. The work aims at validation and assessment of the code to reproduce the observed phenomena and investigate about its limitations to predict complicated mixing phenomena between the subcooled emergency cooling water and the two-phase flow in the downcomer. The obtained results show that the overall trends of the main test variables are well reproduced by the calculations. In particular, the pressure in the primary system show excellent agreement with the experiment. The loop seal clearance phenomenon was observed in the calculation and it was found to have an important influence on the transient progression. Moreover, the collapsed water levels in the core are accurately reproduced in the simulations. However, the drop in the downcomer level before the activation of the DVI from safety injection tanks was underestimated due to multi-dimensional phenomena in the downcomer that are not properly captured by one-dimensional simulations.
Nuclear accidents such as Fukushima Daiichi have highlighted the potential of passive safety systems to replace or complement active safety systems as part of the overall prevention and/or mitigation strategies. In addition, passive systems are key features of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), for which they are becoming almost unavoidable and are part of the basic design of many reactors available in today's nuclear market. Nevertheless, their potential to significantly increase the safety of nuclear power plants still needs to be strengthened, in particular the ability of computer codes to determine their performance and reliability in industrial applications and support the safety demonstration. The PASTELS project (September 2020-February 2024), funded by the European Commission "Euratom H2020" programme, is devoted to the study of passive systems relying on natural circulation. The project focuses on two types, namely the SAfety COndenser (SACO) for the evacuation of the core residual power and the Containment Wall Condenser (CWC) for the reduction of heat and pressure in the containment vessel in case of accident. A specific design for each of these systems is being investigated in the project. Firstly, a straight vertical pool type of SACO has been implemented on the Framatome's PKL loop at Erlangen. It represents a tube bundle type heat exchanger that transfers heat from the secondary circuit to the water pool in which it is immersed by condensing the vapour generated in the steam generator. Secondly, the project relies on the CWC installed on the PASI test loop at LUT University in Finland. This facility reproduces the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of a Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) mainly composed of a CWC, a heat exchanger in the containment vessel connected to a water tank at atmospheric pressure outside the vessel which represents the ultimate heat sink. Several activities are carried out within the framework of the project. Different tests are conducted on these integral test facilities to produce new and relevant experimental data allowing to better characterize the physical behaviours and the performances of these systems for various thermo-hydraulic conditions. These test programmes are simulated by different codes acting at different scales, mainly system and CFD codes. New "system/CFD" coupling approaches are also considered to evaluate their potential to benefit both from the accuracy of CFD in regions where local 3D effects are dominant and system codes whose computational speed, robustness and general level of physical validation are particularly appreciated in industrial studies. In parallel, the project includes the study of single and two-phase natural circulation loops through a bibliographical study and the simulations of the PERSEO and HERO-2 experimental facilities. After a synthetic presentation of the project and its objectives, this article provides the reader with findings related to the physical analysis of the test results obtained on the PKL and PASI installations as well an overall evaluation of the capability of the different numerical tools to simulate passive systems.
KAERI has been operating an integral effect test facility, ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-Hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation), for accident simulations of advanced PWRs. Regarding integral effect tests, a database for major design basis accidents has been accumulated and a Domestic Standard Problem (DSP) exercise using the ATLAS has been proposed and successfully performed. The ATLAS DSP aims at the effective utilization of an integral effect database obtained from the ATLAS, the establishment of a cooperative framework in the domestic nuclear industry, better understanding of thermal hydraulic phenomena, and an investigation of the potential limitations of the existing best-estimate safety analysis codes. For the first ATLAS DSP exercise (DSP-01), integral effect test data for a 100% DVI line break accident of the APR1400 was selected by considering its technical importance and by incorporating comments from participants. Twelve domestic organizations joined in this DSP-01 exercise. Finally, ten of these organizations submitted their calculation results. This ATLAS DSP-01 exercise progressed as an open calculation; the integral effect test data was delivered to the participants prior to the code calculations. The MARS-KS was favored by most participants but the RELAP5/MOD3.3 code was also used by a few participants. This paper presents all the information of the DSP-01 exercise as well as the comparison results between the calculations and the test data. Lessons learned from the first DSP-01 are presented and recommendations for code users as well as for developers are suggested.
Machine tool vibration is well known for reducing machining accuracy. Because vibration response of a linear structure generally depends on its transfer function if the magnitude of excitation were kept constant, this study introduces a RET(Random Excitation Test) based on FRF method to evaluate stiffness of a prototype HDMTL(Heavy-Duty Multi-Tasking Lathe) for large crankshaft of marine engine. Firstly, two force loops of the lathe and corresponding structural loops were identified:1) workpiece - spindle - head stock - main bed, 2) workpiece - tool post - carriage bed. Secondly, compliances of each structural loop were measured respectively using RET with a hydraulic exciter and then converted into stiffness. Finally, the measured stiffness was compared with that obtained previously by FEM analysis. As the result, both measured and computed stiffness were closely in agreement with each other. And the prototype HDMTL has evidently sufficient rigidity above ordinary heavy-duty lathes.
Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22 and R134a were measured on a horizontal 9 hole aluminum multi-channel tube. The main test section in the refrigerant loop was made of a flat multi-channel aluminum tube of 1.4 mm hydraulic diameter and 0.53 m length. Refrigerant was cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Data were obtained in the vapor qualities of 0.1∼0.9 at mass flux of 200∼400 kg/$m^2$s and heat flux of 7.3∼7.7 ㎾/$m^2$ at the saturation temperature of 4$0^{\circ}C$. All popular correlations in single-phase subcooled liquid and flow condensation originally developed for large single tubes predicted the present data of the flat tube within 20% deviation when effective heat transfer area is used in determining experimental data. This suggests that there is little change in flow characteristics and patterns when the tube diameter is reduced down to 1.4 mm diameter range. Thermal insulation for the outer tube section surrounding the test tube for the transport of heat transfer fluid is very important in fluid heat-ing or cooling type heat transfer experimental apparatus.
In this study, strain-controlled low cycle fatigue test for hot rolled STS304 steel was carried out at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. High temperature fatigue test was done using an electric furnace attached on the hydraulic fatigue test machine. The results of this study show that STS304 hot rolled steel has excellent static strength and fatigue characteristics. The hysteresis loop at half life was obtained in order to calculate the elastic and plastic strain. Also, Relationship between strain amplitude and fatigue life was examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of STS304 steel by Coffin-Manson equation.
In our previous research, we proposed a robust saturation controller which involves both control input saturation and structured real parameter uncertainties. This controller can analytically prescribed the upper and lower bounds of parameter uncertainties, and guarantee the closed-loop robust stability of the system in the presence of actuator's saturation. And the availability and the effectiveness of the proposed robust saturation controller were verified through numerical simulations. In this paper, we verify the robust stability of this controller through experimental tests. Expecially, we show unstable cases of other controllers in comparison with this controller. Experimental tests are carried out in the laboratory using a two-story test structure with a hydraulic-type active mass damper.
