This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of Modified Ludzsck Etinger (MLE) process with waste oyster shell media in aerobic tank. Influent flow was 36 L/d and the order of reactor was anoxic, aerobic and sedimentation tank and unit hydraulic retention time was 2 hr, 6 hr and 4 hr, respectively. Sludge recycling rate in sedimentation tank and internal recycling rate were 100%. Media fill rate in aerobic tank was 5%, 10% and 17% and fluid MLSS concentration in aerobic tank was 3000~4000 mg/L. Average TCOD removal rate was 91~93%, TBOD 92~96%, SS 95~96% and when media fill rate was 10% or more, in organic compound removal it could satisfy with wastewater discharge standard. Average total nitrogen removal rate was 70~76% and average total phosphorous removal rate was 58~65%. With media fill rate increasing, total phosphorous average removal rate also increased. For it was that released calcium ion from waste oyster shell reacted with soluble phosphorous. From these experiment results, the MLE process using waste oyster shell as media is a practical method for advanced sewage treatment in rural area.

Annual sediment deposition in reservoirs behind weirs poses flood risk, while its accurate prediction remains a challenge. Sediment management by hydraulic flushing is an effective method to maintain reservoir storage. In this study, an integrated approach to predict sediment inflow and sediment flushing simulation in reservoirs is presented. The annual sediment inflow prediction was carried out with Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) modelling. RESCON model was applied for quantification of sediment flushing feasibility criteria. The integrated approach was applied on Sangju Weir and also on estuary of Nakdong River (NREB). The mean annual sediment inflow predicted at Sangju Weir and NREB was 400,000 ㎥ and 170,000 ㎥, respectively. The sediment characteristics gathered were used to setup RESCON model and sediment balance ratio (SBR) and long term capacity ratio (LTCR) were used as flushing efficiency indicators. For Sangju Weir, the flushing discharge, Qf = 140 ㎥/s with a drawdown of 5 m, and flushing duration, Tf = 10 days was necessary for efficient flushing. At NREB site, the parameters for efficient flushing were Qf = 80 ㎥/s, Tf = 5 days, N = 1, Elf = 2.24 m. The hydraulic flushing was concluded feasible for sediment management at both Sangju Weir and NREB.
Several methods have been proposed to control the sedimentation process. These include catchment management, flushing, sluicing, density current venting, and dredging. Flushing is used to erode previously deposited sediments. In pressurized flushing, the sediment in the vicinity of the outlet openings is scoured and a funnel shaped crater is created. In this study, the effect of localized vibrations in the sediment layers on the dimensions of the flushing cone was investigated experimentally. For this purpose, experiments were carried out with two bottom outlet diameters, five discharge releases for each desired water depth, and one water depth above the center of the bottom outlets. The results indicate that the volume and dimensions of the flushing cone are strongly affected by localized vibrations.
This study presented a lab-scale apparatus for turbidity control in the lakes or reservoirs. Overall, the filamentous mat had a capture efficiency of 70~90% compared with the control group. Generally, the capture efficiency decreased with improved input turbidity flux. However, the attachment and sedimentation were thought to be the main processes for turbidity water retention and removal. Thus, the increase of hydraulic detention time in the mat zone is very important to improve the capture efficiency of the turbidity water.

The significant sedimentation at the estuary in the eastern coast of Korea frequently causes river mouth occlusion where disconnection between the river and sea is observed. River mouth occlusion causing watershed retention raises the environmental risk of the area as it impairs water quality and threatens the area's safety in the event of floods. This study proposes a plan to maintain stability of river channel and flow of flood discharge at the estuary with loss of its function for disaster prevention. To this end, the study tries to change the location and width of stream path, focusing on the center line of stream near the sand bar of river mouth. This allows to identify a shape of stream path that leads the most stable flow. To review the result, this study uses the SRH-2D, a model for two-dimensional hydraulic analysis, and conduct numeric simulation. The simulation result showed that the most effective plan for maintaining the stable flow of running water without having the area sensitive to changes in hydraulic characteristics is to lower the overall river bed height of the sand bar near the center line of stream to a equal level.

In this study, we proposed modified settling basins transformed by substituting the downstream sill for low head weirs such as generic labyrinth weir and inclined crest labyrinth weir worked as internal baffles. Laboratory experiments were carried out to understand hydraulic characteristics inside of the settling basin to improve the efficiency of sedimentation rate. For a quantitative analysis, we suggested the headwater ratio($H_t/P$), the magnification ratio(L/W) and the inflow rate per total crest length($q_L$) as primary analysis indexes for sedimentation efficiency. Six different types of settling basin were used for labscaled pilot tests by distinguishing with internal structures. Based on results, the variation of headwater ratio with the change of magnification ratio would highly affect the deposition efficiency(%) and it was improved under specific condition that repeating arrange number(N) of labyrinth weir was between 2 and 4. Also, the regression analysis showed that initial condition and shape for improving sedimentation efficiency were plotted on the graph for both $q_L{\geq}3.5cm^2/s$ and $L/W{\leq}3.5$. It would be expected that the geometrically optimized labyrinth settling basin could be designed with proper deposition efficiency for inflow rates of influent and required area of settling basin utilizing the proposed analysis index in this study.

Flow distribution of water and sedimentation rate were investigated to understand the hydrodynamics and settling characteristics of particulate materials in a constructed wetland for treatment of non-point sources pollutants, the Sihwa constructed wetland, Korea. The Sihwa constructed wetland is divided into three sub-wetlands(the Banwol, the Donghwa and the Samhwa wetlands) to treat the polluted water from three streams, the Banwol stream, the Donghwa stream and the Samhwa stream. From the results of water flow experiment using dye(Rhodamine 50WT Red), it was found that the water flow in the wetland was prevailing at the waterway and open water. Dye was spread slowly in the closed water area planted by plants. The mean hydraulic retention time(HRT) at the upper area of high wetland and lower wetland of Banwol, was found to be 34.1 hr at the upper area and 74.6 hr at the lower area respectively, totaling approximately 108.7 hr(4.5 days). The sedimentation rate was higher at lower area(sites of B, C and D) of the wetland than upper area(site of A which is settling zone). Based on the forecast for 20 years as to the amount of sediment that can be deposited in the open water in the future, the sediment depth of each area would be like this: A: 6.3 cm, B: 8.3 cm, C: 7.0 cm, D: 9.5 cm. The contents of organic materials in the sediment deposited within the sediment trap were found to be higher overly in the first investigation period which had much rainfall, and B, C and D areas were found to have an increased COD accumulation than A area. Also, nitrogen and phosphorus were found to increase in the down-stream of the wetland. The results of this study suggest that a sustainable research and management for the characteristics of water flow pattern and sedimentation changeable as time passes is needs to maintain or improve the efficiency of water treatment in the constructed wetland.
Among government projects for reduction of coastal disaster, coastal maintenance project stage 1(2000~2009) and stage 2(2010~2019) to reduce coastal erosion and sedimentation are currently under process. In performing the coastal maintenance projects, it is necessary to install artificial concrete armor units for coastal protection. Presently in Korea, products manufactured in Japan are applied to the site, or blocks self-developed by the construction firms are installed. However, there is a lack of technical reviews such as verification of hydraulic characteristics, securing the stability and design techniques. This study is intended to develop waterfront shore protection blocks with good accessibility of people and excellent coastal disaster reduction and protection capability. Through this study, hydraulic characteristics and stability coefficients of shore protection blocks could be drawn.
A novel system to thicken the concentrated colloidal solution from membrane water treat-ment processes was developed. A hollow-fiber microfilter(hydrophilic polyethylene nominal pore size 0.1 μm total surface area 0.42 m2) was installed in an acrylic housing that has an aeration port 5 cm below the membrane and a clarifier in the bottom. The concentrate was uniformly supplied from the top of the housing. Bacuum filtration caused downward flow of concentrate and as a result thickening interface. The addition of poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) resulted in rapid increase of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) and in no improvement of the filtered water turbidity and thickening process. Two types of con-centrate and concentrate turbidity had little effect on the increase of TMP and concentrate thickening. It was observed that for the same height of membrane housing membrane surface area to housing volume (A/V) ratio had significant effect on the increase of TMP. When the housing volume was increased ten times the increasing rate of TMP was three times faster as compared to the original housing. A hydraulic model successfully simulated the formation and sedimentation of thickening interface.

The behavior and influence of EPS on membrane fouling by changing of hydraulic retention time was investigated, using lab. scale submerged membrane bio-reactor, which was operated with gravitational filtration and fed supernatant of primary sedimentation in waste water treatment plant as influent. The membrane was adopted micro-filter of polyethylene hollow fiber. EPS was analysed as polysaccharides and protein especially, into soluble and bound EPS separately. The concentration of soluble EPS was increased at short HRT, then membrane fouling was rapidly progressed and flux was depressed. The most of EPS clogged membrane pore were polysaccharides, while protein was important parameter affected on membrane fouling because of it's more accumulating in the more term operating.
