  • A mathematical wetting model is usually used to predict the deformation of core wall rockfill dams induced by the wetting effect. In this paper, a series of wetting triaxial tests on a rockfill was conducted using a large-sized triaxial apparatus, and the wetting deformation behavior of the rockfill was studied. The wetting strains were found to be related to the confining pressure and shear stress levels, and two empirical equations, which are regarded as the proposed mathematical wetting model, were proposed to express these properties. The stress and deformation of a core wall rockfill dam was studied by using finite element analysis and the proposed wetting model. On the one hand, the simulations of the wetting model can estimate well the observed wetting strains of the upstream rockfill of the dam, which demonstrated that the proposed wetting model is applicable to express the wetting deformation behavior of the rockfill specimen. On the other hand, the simulated additional deformation of the dam induced by the wetting effect is thought to be reasonable according to practical engineering experience, which indicates the potential of the model in dam engineering.

  • In this study, the hydraulic channel routing model is applied to analyze water surface elevation pattern on the Nakdong river in flood cases. The procedure to apply FLDWAV model is presented to solve the Saint-Venant Equations by using four points implicit finite differential scheme. And the flood travel time is studied for reasonable dam management. As this results, variable assumption and constraint are followed to evaluate flood travelling time by hydraulic model. A guideline of reasonable dam's decision making considering downstream effect is showed by this constructed model, and scientific hydraulic analysis is possible by it.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigated the change of hydraulic characteristics like water surface profile and rivered section in the down stream of Keum river after the construction of esturary dam. The effect of esturary dam on the flood control in the Keum river was recognized with the data of two flood events happened in July, 1987 before the construction and in August, 1995 after the construction of estuary dam. For example , duration time above the water level of the warning -flood was changed from 46.5 to 42.8 hours and duration time above the eater level of the danger-flood was changed from 24.7 to 19.8 hours at the Kyuam station. The time difference to reach the water level of the designated -flood between Kyuam and Kangkyung was changed from 3 hours in 1987 to 12 hours and 20 minutes in 1995. The water surface slope of river decreased 25.6% between estuary dam and Kangkyung and increased 16.5% between Kangkyung and Kyuam, and decreased 8.8% between Kyuam and Kongju. As the result, velocity was getting faster and river bed was scoured in the reach of Kangkyung and Kyuam, and velocity was getting slower and river bed was sedimented in the reach of Kangkyung and estury dam.

  • Seepage analysis through unsaturated zone based on the theory of unsaturated flow is commonly performed to evaluate dam safety. However, the concepts of unsaturated soil behavior have not been transferred into the hands of practicing geotechnical engineers since the problems involving unsaturated soils often have the appearances of being extremely complex. The behavior of dam such as seepage rate and the pore water pressure distribution is different according to the unsaturated hydraulic properties, but nevertheless simply assumed properties have been used due to insufficient data from domestic soils. In this paper, the effect of unsaturated hydraulic properties on the behavior of dam was studied through a series of numerical analyses, and then the results were discussed. It is observed that water table moves at a (aster rate, as the values of unsaturated soil parameter a and n increase. The value of m showed opposite trend. The sensitivity calculated using the approximation form showed maximum values near the water table. And the value of n that is related to the slope of soil water characteristic curve gives greatest influence on the change of sensitivity with time.

  • Hydraulic analysis in a dam that has a single outlet of water can be made through a simple comparison between the total precipitation and the volume of discharged water. In case of tailing dams this estimation could yield an error because several drainage facilities are worked independently as well as simultaneously. In this research, a capability of the drainage system in the tailing dam of the old Sangdong Mine was analysed by the means of GIS technic. As a result of this study, it was expected that in the normal working condition of the whole drainage system, the flooding of water over the dam should not occur in spite of the consecutive precipitation during one hour with an intensity of 80.31 mm/hr, a probable precipitation within 100 years. It was, however, revealed that, if the drainage system did not work completely, the water could flood over the dam when the total precipitation reached 251.1 mm.

  • For various historical reasons and some technical reasons, the safety of dams has been controlled by an engineering standards-based approach, which has developed over many years, initially for the design of new dams, but increasingly applied over the past few decades to assess the safety of existing dams. And some countries were asked for risk assessment on existing dam, which included structural, hydraulic safety of dam and social risk. So, Many countries were developed and could be adapted as an additional tool to assist in decision-making for dam safety management.

  • Multipurpose Dam, it produces electric energy by converting the potential energy into kinetic energy utilizing its head and quantity of the water. However, in this process, since during the time when the turbine connected to the hydraulic turbine generator revolves, there occurs a ceaseless loud noise, and due to this condition, it is true state that those people who work at inside of the power plant are damaging as hard as they are unable to concentrate on their work. Not only this, because the hydro-electric power generator room that locates at middle section between the hydraulic turbine room and the office is very large space volume, also since it was constructed chiefly by the reflecting material, it is functioning of amplify the noise when operating the generator, the soundproof measure against this condition is necessitated. On such viewpoint, I have presented the problem point of the relevant Hydraulic turbine dynamo and Hydraulic turbine dynamo room, and after improve such problem point, this study has ever investigated the satisfying degree about the noise-reduction at before and after of the improvement of soundproof measure, using the Auralizational technique that can experience virtual acoustic field. It is considering that such result could be utilized usefully as the fundamental material hereafter for the acoustic performance of the hydro-electric power generator room in dam and when its construction.

  • Under the interaction between dam body, dam foundation and external environment, the dam structural behavior presents the time-varying nonlinear characteristics. According to the prototypical observations, the correct identification on above nonlinear characteristics is very important for dam safety control. It is difficult to implement the description, analysis and diagnosis for dam structural behavior by use of any linear method. Based on the rescaled range analysis approach, the algorithm is proposed to identify and extract the fractal feature on observed dam structural behavior. The displacement behavior of one actual dam is taken as an example. The fractal long-range correlation for observed displacement behavior is analyzed and revealed. The feasibility and validity of the proposed method is verified. It is indicated that the mechanism evidence can be provided for the prediction and diagnosis of dam structural behavior by using the fractal identification method. The proposed approach has a high potential for other similar applications.
