Novel Hybrid Content Synchronization Scheme for Augmented Broadcasting Services

  • As a new hybrid broadcasting service, augmented broadcasting shows enhanced broadcasting content on a large TV screen, while augmented reality (AR) on a mobile device augments additional graphical content onto an input image from the device's own camera to provide useful and convenient information for users. A one-sided broadcasting service using AR has already been attempted in virtual advertisements during sport broadcasts. However, because its augmentation is preprocessed before the video image is transmitted, the viewer at home may have no influence on this formation; and no interaction for the user is possible unless the viewer has a direct connection to the content provider. Augmented broadcasting technology enables viewers to watch mixed broadcasting content only when they want such service and to watch original broadcasting content when they do not. To realize an augmented broadcasting service, the most important issue is to resolve the hybrid content synchronization over heterogeneous broadcast and broadband networks. This paper proposes a novel hybrid content synchronization scheme for an augmented broadcasting service and presents its implementation and results in a terrestrial DTV environment.

  • Energy harvesting technology, which converts wasted energy sources in everyday life into usable electric energy, is gaining attention as a solution to the challenges of charging and managing batteries for the driving of IoT sensors, which are one of the key technologies in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. Hybrid energy harvesting technology involves integrating two or more energy harvesting technologies to generate electric energy from multiple energy conversion mechanisms. In this study, a hybrid energy harvesting device called TMPPEG (thermo-magneto-piezoelectric-pyroelectric energy generator), which utilizes low-grade waste heat, was developed by incorporating PVDF polymer piezoelectric components and optimizing the system. The variations in piezoelectric output and thermoelectric output were examined based on the spacing of the clamps, and it was found that the device exhibited the highest energy output when the clamp spacing was 2 mm. The voltage and energy output characteristics of the TMPPEG were evaluated, demonstrating its potential as an efficient hybrid energy harvesting component that effectively harnesses low-grade waste heat.

Device-to-Device Communication Underlaying Cellular Networks: Connection Establishment and Interference Avoidance

  • It is expected that device-to-device (D2D) communication is allowed to underlay future cellular networks such as IMT-Advanced for spectrum efficiency. This article studies the mechanisms of D2D communication and interference avoidance when the D2D subsystem reuses uplink resources and downlink spectrums with a cellular system, respectively. We firstly propose an effective scheme to establish and maintain D2D communication. Moreover, a novel method to deal with the resource allocation and interference avoidance issues by utilizing the network peculiarity of a hybrid network to share the uplink resource is proposed. Most research focuses on reusing the uplink spectrums, but how to share the downlink frequency bands is seldom addressed. To share the downlink spectrums and avoid the interference to the primary cellular devices, a labeled time slots based mechanism is proposed. Implementation details are described in a real cellular system and simulation results prove that satisfying performance can be achieved by using the proposed mechanisms.

  • To improve the switching time of active optical bistable devices, we propose an active optical bistable device that consists of a diode laser, a transistor, and a photodetector. By implementing the proposed device we realize the optical bistable device with a 5 nanosecond switching time. This is the fastest switching time among the hybrid type optical bistable devices. It is also experimentally demonstrated that the proposed device may be used in an optical disc pick up.

빌딩간 연결을 통한 복합제어시스템의 최적설계 (Optimal Design of Hybrid Control System through Inter-Building Connection)

  • This study deals with the optimal design of a hybrid control system composed of a combination of active control system and passive control system for effective seismic performance improvement of two adjacent structures. The proposed hybrid control system adopts a configuration of installing an active control device in one building and connecting two adjacent structures with a passive control device so that the one-side active control force can be bi-directionally applied to both buildings through the passive connecting devices. In order to derive the optimal performance of the proposed system, the design parameters of the passive and active control systems were searched using the genetic algorithm. Numerical simulations of 10-story and 8-story buildings have been performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed technique. For the purpose of comparison, the conventional independent control system with two identical active control systems being installed separately for each structure was also optimally designed and its seismic response has been evaluated as well. From the comparative results of the two control systems, it is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid control system requires larger control force for its one-side active control device than the conventional independent control system does for each of both-side active devices, but quite less than the total control force required for both-side devices of the independent control system, while maintaining similar seismic performance. Therefore, the proposed system is more economical and reliable than the conventional independent control system with two identical active devices.

위치확률 기반의 하이브리드 WSD 무선자원 할당 방안 연구 (Research on Resource Allocation Method for a Hybrid WSD Based on Location Probability)

  • 국내 TV 화이트 스페이스(TVWS) 기술기준에 따르면 디지털 TV(DTV) 서비스영역 내에서 고정 전력을 사용하는 휴대용 TV 화이트 스페이스 기기(WSD)의 경우, DTV 서비스 영역 경계 부분에서 전파환경이 변화하면 간섭이 발생할 수 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 TVWS geo-location 데이터베이스 기반의 고정 전력할당 방안에 더하여 스펙트럼 센싱을 수행하는 하이브리드 WSD의 무선자원 할당 방안을 제안한다. 하이브리드 WSD의 현재 위치에서 DTV의 수신전력을 센싱하고, 위치확률을 계산하여 허용가능 실효 등방향 방사전력을 산출한다. 이러한 높은 정확도의 WSD 무선자원 할당 방안을 통해 WSD가 국내 기술기준을 만족하면서 주변 픽셀로의 유해한 간섭을 제거하고 주파수 효율을 향상시켰다.

Analysis and Implementation of Multiphase Multilevel Hybrid Single Carrier Sinusoidal Modulation

  • This paper proposes a hybrid single carrier sinusoidal modulation suitable for multiphase multilevel inverters. Multiphase multilevel inverters are controlled by hybrid modulation to provide multiphase variable voltage and a variable frequency supply. The proposed modulation combines the benefits of fundamental frequency modulation and single carrier sinusoidal modulation (SC-SPWM) strategies. The main characteristics of hybrid modulation are a reduction in switching losses and improved harmonic performance. The proposed algorithm can be applied to cascaded multilevel inverter topologies. It has low computational complexity and it is suitable for hardware implementations. SC-SPWM and its base modulation design are implemented on a TMS320F2407 digital signal processor (DSP). A Complex Programmable Logic Device realizes the hybrid PWM algorithm and it is integrated with a DSP processor for hybrid SC-SPWM generation. The feasibility of this hybrid modulation is verified by spectral analysis, power loss analysis, simulation and experimental results.

  • The position control is very important in semiconductor manufacturing devices, precision machining tools, precision measuring instruments, etc. The accuracy of measurement for the distance in these devices affect on the performance of the whole devices. Therefore, in those precision instruments, a sensing device that can measure the distance of movement with high-precision resolution is required. In this paper, a novel hybrid (digital and analog) type encoder is proposed. It is shown that from several experiments, a high-resolution angular position measurement device can be designed with a low cost incremental encoder and a DSP controller.

  • In recent years, as the electonic industry has become more advanced, the LPM(Linear Pulse Motor) has appeared in a wide range of applications because of easier control, operation by open-loop control, high positioning accuracy, and retrieval of position or velocity data by the input pulses. In this study, we deal with the development of a position detection device attached to a hybrid LPM in our laboratory. Precise position detection signals could be sensed by the synchronous rectifier method from the LPM stator scale. In addition, we can keep the amplitude constant by using an AGC(Automatic Gain Control) circuit. Experimental results show that the position data is good enough to perform the LPM position control.
