  • Equations of motion for the vibration analysis of rotating pre-twisted beams with functionally graded material properties are derived in this paper. Based on Timoshenko beam theory, the effects of shear and rotary inertia are considered. The pre-twisted beam has a rectangular cross-section and is mounted on a rotating rigid hub with a setting angle. Functionally graded material (FGM) properties are considered along the height direction of the beam. The equations of stretching and bending motion are derived by Kane's method employing hybrid deformation variables. To validate the derived equations, natural frequencies of a rotating FGM pre-twisted beam are compared to those obtained by a commercial software ANSYS. The effects of the pre-twisted angle, slenderness ratio, hub radius, volume fraction exponent, and angular speed on the modal characteristics of the system are investigated with the proposed model.

  • Since the ZnO varistor is a semiconductor device, the internal thermal distribution during the varistor operation is recognized as an important factor in the performance and deterioration of the varistor. For an optimal varistor structure design, the thermal runaway phenomenon during the varistor operation was interpreted using the Comsol 5.2 analysis program by a finite element analysis. The maximum temperature of the center measured in the cross section of the ZnO varistor was confirmed to increase as the temperature moved from the lower electrode to the center towards the upper electrode up to 572.6 K. The electrodes are thinned so that the influence of the Schottky barrier is not great. The heat gradient balance is determined to be improved when the electrode of the hybrid form is introduced. The thickness, density, pore distribution, impurity uniformity, and particle size of the ZnO varistor are required, and it is determined that the pyrolysis gradient will be improved regardless of the electrode thickness. When these results are applied to design the ZnO varistor, the optimal structure of the ZnO varistor can be obtained.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the wear resistance of tooth-colored materials used in crown restoration for primary molars with a chewing simulator. In this study, four groups-three experimental groups and one control group-were included. They consisted of three-dimensional (3D) printed resin crowns (NextDent and Graphy), milled nano-hybrid ceramic crowns (MAZIC Duro), and prefabricated zirconia crowns (NuSmile). Twelve mandibular second molar specimens were prepared from each group. In the wear experiment, 6.0 × 105 cycles were conducted with a force of 50 N, and a 6 mm-diameter steatite ball was used as an antagonist. The amount of wear was calculated by comparing the scan files before and after the chewing simulation using 3D metrology software, and the worn cross-section was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resin and ceramic groups did not exhibit any statistically significant differences. However, compared to other crown groups, the zirconia crown group demonstrated notably reduced levels of wear (p < 0.05). In SEM images, layers and cracks were observed in the 3D-printed resin crown groups, which differed from those in the other groups.

  • Cross-hybridizations between DNA of two pseudomonads and a xanthomonad suggested that the three DNA types had a considerable section in common. The existence of this common part was proved by hybridization of preselected DNA, i.e. DNA resulting from a previous hybridization between any one set of two DNA types, with the third type. It was thus shown that about 50% of the DNA of the three organisms was similar. This common part was isolated in pure state and its % (G+C) was found to be indentical to the overall base composition of the native DNA. The evolutionary drift in % (G+C) could thus not be detected. The total molecular weight of the chromosornal DNA/bacterial nucleoid was determined to be 2.4 ${\times} 10^9$daltons. It can therefore be estimated that the common putida-fluorescenspelargonii DNA part consists of some 2,000 cistrons. P. putida and P. fluorescens share an additional 1,300 cistrons, and all xanthomonads share at least an additional 1,000 cistrons.

  • Supercomputing performance demand forecasting at the national level is an important information to the researchers in fields of the computational science field, the specialized agencies which establish and operate R&D infrastructure, and the government agencies which establish science and technology infrastructure. This study derived the factors affecting the scientific and technological capability through the analysis of supercomputing performance prediction research, and it proposed a hybrid forecasting model of applying the super-computer technology trends. In the cross-sectional analysis, multiple regression analysis was performed using factors with GDP, GERD, the number of researchers, and the number of SCI papers that could affect the supercomputing performance. In addition, the supercomputing performance was predicted by multiplying in the cross-section analysis with technical progress rate of time period which was calculated by time series analysis using performance(Rmax) of Top500 data. Korea's performance scale of supercomputing in 2016 was predicted using the proposed forecasting model based on data of the top500 supercomputer and supercomputing performance demand in Korea was predicted using a cross-sectional analysis and technical progress rate. The results of this study showed that the supercomputing performance is expected to require 15~30PF when it uses the current trend, and is expected to require 20~40PF when it uses the trend of the targeting national-level. These two results showed significant differences between the forecasting value(9.6PF) of regression analysis and the forecasting value(2.5PF) of cross-sectional analysis.

  • This study deals with the case that was the field application of the microseismic monitoring techniques for the stability monitoring in a domestic mine. The usefulness and limitations of the microseismic techniques were examined through analyzing the microseismic monitored data. The target limestone mine adopted a hybrid room-and-pillar mining method to improve the extraction ratio. The accelerometers were installed in each vertical pillar within the test bed which has the horizontal cross-section $50m{\times}50m$. The measured signals were divided into 4 types; blasting induced signal, drilling induced signal, damage induced signal, and electric noise. The stability analysis was performed based on the measured damage induced signals. After the blasting in the mining section close to the test bed, the damage of the pillar was increased and rockfall near the test bed could be estimated from monitored microseismic data. It was possible to assess the pillar stability from the changes of daily monitored data and the proposed safety criteria from the accumulated monitored data. However, there was a difficulty to determine the 3D microseismic source positions due to the 2D local sensor arrays. Also, it was needed to use real-time monitoring methods in domestic mines. By complementing the problems encountered in the mine application and comparing microseismic monitored data with mining operations, the microseismic monitoring technique can be used as a better safety method.

  • In this study, lignin/chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride)(CPVC) blended fibers have been produced for the development of low-cost carbon fiber. Carbon fiber manufacturing was accomplished through stabilization and carbonization process. The lignin/CPVC blended fibers were prepared by wet spinning method. Dimethylacetamid e(DMAc) and cychlohexanone in a ratio of 5:1(wt%) was employed as co-solvent. The ratio of lignin/CPVC was prepared at 0/10, 1/9, 2/8, 3/7, 4/6, and 5/5(wt%). The spinning solution was extruded at a rate of 0.1 to 0.4ml/min according to the blending ratio. The speed of the rollers was the same for all ratios(draw ratio=1). Analysis of fiber cross-section by scanning eletron microscopy(SEM) showed that as the lignin ratio increased in the same coagulation bath and distilled water, the pore size of the spinning fiber decreased. Therefore, the highest tensile strength of the blending fibers was 6.3±1.2MPa at the 5/5 ratio. The carbon fiber also showed the best tensile strength of 120.78±2.43MPa at 5/5 ratio.

  • The effects of welding speed were investigated on penetration characteristics, defects and mechanical properties including formability test in Nd:YAG laser welded 1000MPa grade DP steels. A shielding gas was not used and bead-on-plate welding was performed with various welding speeds at 3.5kW laser power. Defects of surface and inner beads were not observed in all welding speeds. As the welding speed increased, the weld cross-section varied from the trapezoid having wider bottom bead, through X type, finally to V type in partial penetration range of welding speeds. The characteristic of hardness distribution was also investigated. The center of HAZ had maximum hardness, followed by a slight decrease of hardness as approaching to FZ. Significant softening occurred at the HAZ near BM. Regardless of the welding speed, the weld showed approximately the same hardness distribution. In the perpendicular tensile test with respect to the weld direction, all specimens were fractured at the softening zone. In the parallel tensile test to the weld direction, the first crack occurred at weld center and then propagated into the weld. Good formability over 80% was taken for all welding conditions.

  • In this study we propose a hybrid color-filter design method in which a nanohole array and a nanodisk array are separated by nanopillars of the material AZ 1500. We propose a design method for an RGB color filter, using the tendency of transmitted light according to each design variable. Especially we analyzed the intensity distribution of the electric field in the cross section, and set the height of the nanopillars so that the local surface-plasmon resonances generated in the two different arrays do not affect each other. The optical characteristics of the optimized color filter are as follows: In the case of the red filter, the ratio of the wavelength band expressing red in the visible broadband is 55.01%, and the maximum transmittance is 41.53%. In the case of the green filter, the ratio of the wavelength band expressing green is 40.20%, and the maximum transmittance is 42.41%. In the case of the blue filter, the ratio of the wavelength band expressing blue is 32.78%, and the maximum transmittance is 30.27%. We expect to improve the characteristics of color filters integrated in industrial devices by this study.
