  • Interests in fuel cell based power generation systems are on the steady rise owing to various advantages such as high efficiency, ultra low emission, and potential to achieve a very high efficiency by a synergistic combination with conventional heat engines. In this study, the performance of a hybrid system which combined a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) and an indirectly fired micro gas turbine adopting carbon dioxide capture technologies was predicted. Commercialized 2.5 MW class MCFC system was used as the based system so that the result of this study could reflect practicality. Three types of ambient pressure hybrid systems were devised: one adopting post-combustion capture and two adopting oxy-combustion capture. One of the oxy-combustion based system is configured as a semi-closed type, while the other is an open cycle type. The post-combustion based system exhibited higher net power output and efficiency than the oxy-combustion based systems. However, the semi-closed system using oxy-combustion has the advantage of capturing almost all carbon dioxide.

  • Commercial PAN fibers were thermally stabilized at 220 or $240^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Those fibers were further stabilized using radio-frequency (RF) capacitive plasma discharge during 5 or 15 min. From Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results, it was observed that an additional plasma treatment led to further stabilization of PAN fibers. After stabilization, carbonization was performed to investigate the final tensile properties of the fabricated carbon fibers (CFs). The results revealed that a combination of thermal and plasma treatment is a possible stabilization process for manufacturing CFs. Morphology of CFs was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The morphology shows that the plasma stabilization performed by the RF large gap plasma discharge may damage the surface of the CF, so it is necessary to select a proper process condition to minimize the damage.

  • Hybrid $A1_2O_3-TiC$ ceramic particle reinforced 6061 and 5083 Al composite powders were prepared by the combination of twin rolling and stone mill crushing process, followed by consolidating processes of cold compaction, degassing and hot extrusion. The composite bar consists of lamellar structure of ceramic particle rich area and matrix area, in which the hybrid was decomposed into each TiC of about $3-4\mutextrm{m}$ and $AI_2O_3$ particles of about $1-2\mutextrm{m}$ in diameter. It also found that fine $Mg_2Si$ precipitates of about 30 nm were embedded in the matrix, which have grains of about 3 $\mutextrm{m}$. Higher UTS was measured at the 5083 composite bar compared to the conventionally fabricated composite, due to again refinement effect by the rapid solidification. No particle was shown to form in the interface between the matrix and reinforcement, whereas carbon was diffused into the matrix.

  • As a preparatory study for Global Positioning System-Very Long Baseline Interferometry (GPS-VLBI) hybrid system, we examined if VLBI type observation of the GPS signal is realizable through a test experiment. The test experiment was performed between Kashima and Koganei, Japan, with 110 km baseline. The GPS L1 and L2 signals were received by commercial GPS antennas, down-converted to video-band signals by specially developed GPS down converters, and then sampled by VLBI samplers. The sampled GPS data were recorded as ordinary VLBI data by VLBI recorders. The sampling frequency was 64 MHz and the observation time was 1 minute. The recorded data were correlated by a VLBI correlator. From correlation results, we simultaneously obtained correlation fringes from all 8 satellites above a cut-off elevation which was set to 15 degree. 87.5% of L1 fringes and 12.5% of L2 fringes acquired the Signal to Noise Ratios which are sufficient to achieve the group delay precision of 0.1nsec that is typical in current geodetic VLBI. This result shows that VLBI type observation of GPS satellites will be readily realized in future GPS-VLBI hybrid system.

  • Several estimation methods used in the range measurement based wireless localization area have individual problems. These problems may not occur according to certain application areas. However, these problems may give rise to serious problems in particular applications. In this paper, three methods, ILS (Iterative Least Squares), DS (Direct Solution), and DSRM (Difference of Squared Range Measurements) methods are considered. Problems that can occur in these methods are defined and a simple hybrid solution is presented to solve them. The ILS method is the most frequently used method in wireless localization and has local minimum problems and a large computational burden compared with closed-form solutions. The DS method requires less processing time than the ILS method. However, a solution for this method may include a complex number caused by the relations between the location of reference nodes and range measurement errors. In the near-field region of the complex solution, large estimation errors occur. In the DSRM method, large measurement errors occur when the mobile node is far from the reference nodes due to the combination of range measurement error and range data. This creates the problem of large localization errors. In this paper, these problems are defined and a hybrid localization method is presented to avoid them by integrating the DS and DSRM methods. The defined problems are confirmed and the performance of the presented method is verified by a Monte-Carlo simulation.

  • In this paper, the design method of a hybrid fuzzy controller with an optimal auto-tuning method is proposed. The conventional PID controller becomes so sensitive to the control environments and the change of parameters that the efficiency of its utility for the complex and nonlinear plant has been questioned in transient state. In this paper, first, a hybrid fuzzy logic controller(HFLC) is proposed. The control input of the system in the HFLC is a convex combination by a fuzzy variable of the FLC's output in transient state and the PID's output in steady state. Second, a powerful auto-tuning algorithm is presented to automatically improve the Performance of controller, utilizing the improved complex method and the genetic algorithm. The algorithm estimates automatically the optimal values of scaling factors and PID coefficients. Controllers are applied to the plants with time-delay and the DC servo motor Computer simulations are conducted at the step input and the system performances are evaluated in the ITAE.

  • This paper presents a study conducted with the aim of developing a model of tendering based on a technique of artificial intelligence by managing and controlling the factors of success or failure of construction projects through the evaluation of the process of invitation to tender. Aiming to solve this problem, analysis of the current environment based on SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) is first carried out. Analysis was evaluated through a case study of the construction projects in Algeria, to bring about the internal and external factors which affect the process of invitation to tender related to the construction projects. This paper aims to develop a mean to identify threats-opportunities and strength-weaknesses related to the environment of various national construction projects, leading to the decision on whether to continue the project or not. Following a SWOT analysis, novel artificial intelligence models in forecasting the project status are proposed. The basic principal consists in interconnecting the different factors to model this phenomenon. An artificial neural network model is first proposed, followed by a model based on fuzzy logic. A third model resulting from the combination of the two previous ones is developed as a hybrid model. A simulation study is carried out to assess performance of the three models showing that the hybrid model is better suited in forecasting the construction project status than RNN (recurrent neural network) and FL (fuzzy logic) models.

  • A series of forced oscillation tests on a model mooring chain was carried out to investigate dynamic tension characteristics. The model test was conducted at two different water depths to gather basic data for a 'truncated mooring test' and 'hybrid mooring test'. The truncated and hybrid mooring tests are important for overcoming the limitation of water depth that existed in previous model tests. The resultant tension RAO provides a good possibility of approximation of dynamic tension by equivalent weight adjustment for different water depths. Because the hybrid mooring test is an adequate combination of model test and simulation, an accurate simulation model for the mooring system is essential. The simulation results show good agreement with model test results.

  • Recently, Hybrid Electric Vehicle(: HEV) is in the spotlight to global warming caused by carbon dioxide and emission reduction. HEV consists of a combination of mechanical engine and electric motor system. The flow of energy required to drive a HEV depends on the driving conditions of the vehicle. In this paper, we study the contents of HEV education using real-time monitoring system. A real-time monitoring system consisting of hardware and virtual programs is used to simulate the overall operation of a HEV through simulations according to driving conditions and to explain how to learn through hardware.

  • By using inherent stopping criteria of LDPC codes, the average number of iterations can be substantially reduced at high signal to noise ratio (SNR). However, we encounter a problem when hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) systems are applied. Frequent failures of decoding at low SNR region imply that the decoder leaches the maximum number of iterations frequently and thus the decoding complexity increases. In this paper, we propose a combination of stopping criteria using the syndrome weight of tentative codeword. By numerical analysis, it is shown that the decoding complexity of given H-ARQ system is reduced by 70-80% with the proposed algorithms.
