  • The importance of DC breakers as key protection equipment is increasing in accordance with growing concerns on MVDC distribution network systems without DC/AC conversion. Different from the situation in AC systems, no natural zero-crossing point exists in DC systems. Thus, DC breaker technology is more difficult than AC breaker technology. The solutions for DC breakers can be divided into three types: mechanical, power electronics, and hybrid. In this study, the operating principles of several topologies of hybrid circuit breakers and that of the proposed DC breaker are analyzed and simulated by sorting two types. The breakers are compared in terms of the type and number of semiconductors, volume, power loss, auxiliary components, isolation, and other aspects. The advantages and disadvantages of the breakers are also analyzed.

  • Currently, the development of industry makes needs larger electric supply. Providers must consider the efficiency about losses and reliability of the system. In this case, DC power system can save electrical energy; long-distance transmission line losses. Relevance to switch technology with a voltage-source converter (VSC) in AC-DC conversion system have been researched. But, protection device of DC-link against fault current is still needed to study much. VSC DC power system is vulnerable to DC-cable short-circuit and ground faults, because DC-link has a huge size of capacitor filter which releases extremely large current during DC faults. Furthermore, DC has a fatal flaw that current zero crossing is nonexistence. To interrupt the DC, several methods which make a zero crossing is used; parallel connecting self-excited series LC circuit with main switch, LC circuit with power electronic device called hybrid DC circuit breaker. Meanwhile, self-excited oscillator needs a huge size capacitor that produces big oscillation current which makes zero crossing. This capacitor has a quite effective on the price of DCCB. In this paper, hybrid self-excited type superconducting DCCB which are using AC circuit breaker system is studied by simulation tool PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • VSC-HVDC system is vulnerable to a DC fault because the fault current can be injected from AC system to DC system during the fault. Therefore, DC circuit breaker is required to isolate faults in VSC-HVDC system. The inverse current injection method of circuit breaker has been considered as DC circuit breaker. However, the topology has drawback that the breaking time is longer than hybrid circuit breaker using semiconductor devices. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an improved topology of circuit breaker based on inverse current injection method. In addition, the proposed topology will be compared with the existing topology. And we will verify its effects by using the simulation results.

  • Interruption of AC is easier due to natural occuring of zero crossings. In DC, zero crossings is achieved by Forced commutation technique. In this paper an alternative counter voltage(ACV) DC Hybrid Circuit breaker(DC-HCB) is modeled using EMTP/ATP tool, Results show that, ACV DC-HCB can interrupt DC with in 5ms with a source voltage of upto 1 KV.

  • This work investigates the commutation characteristics of the current flowing through an electrical-contact-type switch to the semiconductor switch branch during the breaking operation of hybrid DC switchgear. A simple, reliable, low-cost natural commutation method is proposed, and the current commutation characteristics are analyzed in accordance with the conduction voltage drop of the semiconductor switch branch through experiments. A prototype 400 V/10 A class natural commutation type hybrid DC switchgear is set up. Its performance is verified, and its characteristics are analyzed.

  • This paper presents computer simulation results for developing new type of SF$_{6}$ Circuit Breaker in terms of cold gas flow after small current interruption. This cold gas flows down a nozzle into the chamber of a circuit breaker. There are many difficult problems in analyzing the gas flow due to complex geometry, moving boundary, shock wave and so on. When predicting the dielectric capability of a gas circuit breaker after interruption, the gas pressure and density distributions due to the cold gas must be considered in addition to the electrical field imposed across the gas. A self-coded computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program is used for the simulation of cold gas flow in order to evaluate the electrical field characteristic across open contacts and transient characteristics of insulations after small current interruption.

  • This paper reports the performance of a CB (Circuit Breaker) and converter for the battery operated Wind-PV (Photovoltaic) system. For this purpose, a fluctuating reduction controller for an electric generation hybrid (wind+PV) system is suggested. The method operates a wind turbine, PV, CB, converter and battery. Integration of wind and PV sources, which are generally complementary, usually reduce the capacity of the battery. Also, CB controls the overvoltage of the generation system. The objective is to control the operation of the converter and the CB and reduce power fluctuation. This paper includes discussion on system performance, power quality, fluctuation and effect of the randomness of the wind.

  • This paper presents the interruption capability of serial-hybrid type GCB (gas circuit breaker) compared with that of puffer type. First a puffer type model interrupter which has the stroke length of 80 mm has been designed and manufactured. And also, a serial-hybrid type interrupter which has the same design parameters as the puffer type interrupter except the serially arranged thermal-expansion chamber and puffer cylinder has been fabricated. Using a simplified synthetic test facility, the critical interruption capabilities of the two GCBs have been estimated. The critical di/dt, the critical dV/dt of ITRV (initial transient recovery voltage) and the minimum arcing time of the puffer type model GCB were 10.7 A/${\mu}\textrm{s}$, 5.5 kV/${\mu}\textrm{s}$, and 15.0 ms respectively. In the case of serial-hybrid type model GCB, each of the values was 16.6A/${\mu}\textrm{s}$, 11.5 kV/${\mu}\textrm{s}$ and 13.0 ms. As a conclusion of this work, it has been quantitatively confirmed that the hybrid type interrupter can obtain the sufficient interruption capability at the operating force which is so low that puffer type interrupter has not the interruption capability.
