It is important to make reasonable prediction about the long-term deformation of high rockfill geostructures. However, the deformation is usually underestimated using the rockfill parameters obtained from laboratory tests due to different size effects, which make it necessary to identify parameters from in-situ monitoring data. This paper proposes a novel hybrid back-analysis method with a modified objective function defined for the time-dependent back-analysis problem. The method consists of two stages. In the first stage, an improved weighted average method is proposed to quickly narrow the search region; while in the second stage, an adaptive response surface method is proposed to iteratively search for the satisfactory solution, with a technique that can adaptively consider the translation, contraction or expansion of the exploration region. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed hybrid back-analysis method is demonstrated by back-analyzing the long-term deformation of two high embankments constructed for airport runways, with the rockfills being modeled by a rheological model considering the influence of stress states on the creep behavior.
The objective of this experimental study was to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer and air flow in two-dimensional impinging jet system, in which hybrid rods have been set up in front of heating surface in order to increase heat transfer. The shape of hybrid rods had a cross section made with a half of circular cross section and that of rectangular. This time, the clearance from hybrid rod to heating surface(C=1, 2, 4mm) and the pitch between each hybrid rods(P=30, 40, 50mm) changed for the transition region(H/B=10). And this result compared with the experimentation without hybrid rod. As a result, heat transfer performance was best under the condition of C=1mm, in case clearance changed, and as the pitch is 30mm, it is largely influenced by eddies and acceleration in case pitch of hybrid rod changed.
This paper presents a new hybrid method for solving nonlinear complementarity problems with $P_0$-functions. It can be regarded as a combination of smoothing trust region method with ODE-based method and line search technique. A feature of the proposed method is that at each iteration, a linear system is only solved once to obtain a trial step, thus avoiding solving a trust region subproblem. Another is that when a trial step is not accepted, the method does not resolve the linear system but generates an iterative point whose step-length is defined by a line search. Under some conditions, the method is proven to be globally and superlinearly convergent. Preliminary numerical results indicate that the proposed method is promising.

This paper introduces an effective hybridization of the usual simplex method and an interior point method in the convergent framework of Dembo and Sahi. We formulate a specific and detailed algorithm (HYBRID) and report the results of some preliminary testing on small dense problems for its viability. By piercing through the feasible region, the newly developed hybrid algorithm avoids the combinatorial structure of linear programs, and several other interesting and important characteristics of this algorithm are also discussed.

It has been proposed that chitin synthase 3 (CHS3)-nediated chitin synthesis during the vegetative cell cycle is regulated by chitin synthase 4 (CHS4) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To investigate direct protein-protein interaction between the coding products of these two genes, a domain of Chs3p that is responsible for interaction with Chs4p was identified, using the yeast two-hybrid system. This domain of 54 amino acids, termed MIRC3-4 (Maximum Interacting Region of Chs3p with Chs4p), is well conserved among CHS3 homologs of various fungi. Some mutations in MIRC3-4 resulted in a decrease in the enzymatic activity and chitin contents. Chs3p carrying those mutations exhibited weak interactions with Chs4p, when assayed by the yeast two-hybrid system. Surprisingly, all the mutants were sensitive to Calcofluor regardless of changes in enzymatic activities or chitin contents. This report deals with a core region in MIRC3-4 that affects the interaction with Chs4p.
In this paper, we have proposed license plate recognition system for multi-national vehicle license plate using geometric features along with hybrid and seven segment pattern vectors. In the proposed system, we suggested to find horizontal and vertical relation after going through preparation process with inputted real-time license plate image of Korea and Japan, and then to classify license plate with using characteristic and geometric information of license plates. It classifies the extracted license plate images into letters and numbers, such as local name, local number, classification character and license consecutive numbers, and recognize license plate of Korea and Japan by applying hybrid and seven segments pattern vectors to classified letter and number region. License plate extraction step of the proposed system uses width and length information along with relative rate of Korean and Japanese license plate. Moreover, it exactly segmentation by letters with using each letter and number position information within license plate region, and recognizes Korean and Japanese license plates by applying hybrid and seven segment pattern vectors, containing characteristics related to letter size and movement within segmented letter area. As the result of testing the proposed system in real experiment, it recognized regardless of external lighting conditions as well as classifying license plates by nations, Korea and Japan. We have developed a system, recognizing regardless of inputted structural character of vehicle licenses and external environment.

This paper describes a power control scheme to improve the performance of a fuel cell battery hybrid power source for residential application. The proposed power control scheme includes a power control strategy to control the power flow of the fuel cell hybrid power system and a digital control technique for a front-end dc-dc converter of the fuel cell. The power control strategy enables the fuel cell to operate within the high efficiency region defined by the polarization curve and efficiency curve of the fuel cell. A dual boost converter with digital control is applied as a front-end dc-dc converter to control the fuel cell output power. The digital control technique of the converter employs a moving-average digital filter into its voltage feedback loop to cancel the low frequency harmonic current drawn from the fuel cell and then limits the fuel cell output current to a current limit using a predictive current limiter to keep the fuel cell operation within the high efficiency region as well as to minimize the fuel cell oxygen starvation.
An analysis for turbulent hybrid beatings with fluid inertia and swirl injection effect was derived for studying static characteristics of swirl-controlled hybrid journal. The swirl-controlled hybrid journal beating is considered to have more freedom in stability control in high speed rotating machinery. Current analysis is compared with experimental results with 3-recess hydrostatic journal bearing. The analysis revealed that the fluid momentum exchange at orifice discharge could produce pressure rise inside the recess region which can control the shear flow induced by journal rotation. The analysis also shows that the swirl-controlled hybrid journal beating has a capability of controlling load carrying capacity and stability by manipulating supply pressure and injection angle.
In this paper, the hybrid illumination system for effectively detecting surface defects in steel plate with lowcontrast, non-uniformity and featureless is designed based on illuminance uniformity. First of all, characteristics of steel plate defects were considered and typical inspection illumination system is implemented. Optimum illumination parameters for uniformly illuminating an inspection area in the typical illumination system are selected based on the illuminance uniformity and illuminance distribution measurement. The illuminance uniformity and illuminance distribution are measured using an illuminometer based on the arduino. Through illuminance distribution analysis of the typical illumination, an hybrid illumination is designed by fusing bi-directional illumination and coaxial illumination. The hybrid illumination showed higher uniformity ratio and illuminance distribution than the typical illuminations. The hybrid illumination system showed the ability to uniformly illuminate the entire inspection region of steel plate surface.
In the present investigation, we attempted to design a protocol to develop a hybrid protein with better bioremediation capacity. Using in silico approaches, a Hybrid Open Reading Frame (Hybrid ORF) is developed targeting the genes of microorganisms known for degradation of organophosphates. Out of 21 genes identified through BLAST search, 8 structurally similar genes (opdA, opd, opaA, pte RO, pdeA, parC, mpd and phnE) involved in biodegradation were screened. Gene conservational analysis categorizes these organophosphates degrading 8 genes into 4 super families i.e., Metallo-dependent hydrolases, Lactamase B, MPP and TM_PBP2 superfamily. Hybrid protein structure was modeled using multi-template homology modeling (3S07_A; 99%, 1P9E_A; 98%, 2ZO9_B; 33%, 2DXL_A; 33%) by $Schr{\ddot{o}}dinger$ software suit version 10.4.018. Structural verification of protein models was done using Ramachandran plot, it was showing 96.0% residue in the favored region, which was verified using RAMPAGE. The phosphotriesterase protein was showing the highest structural similarity with hybrid protein having raw score 984. The 5 binding sites of hybrid protein were identified through binding site prediction. The docking study shows that hybrid protein potentially interacts with 10 different organophosphates. The study results indicate that the hybrid protein designed has the capability of degrading a wide range of organophosphate compounds.
