A hybrid HVDC system that is composed of line commutated converter (LCC) at the rectifier side and voltage source converter (VSC) in series with LCC at the inverter side is studied in this paper. The start-up strategy, DC fault ride-through capability, and fault recovery strategy for the hybrid HVDC system are proposed. The steady state and dynamic performances under start-up, AC fault, and DC fault scenarios are analyzed based on a bipolar hybrid HVDC system. Furthermore, the immunity of the LCC inverter in hybrid HVDC to commutation failure is investigated. The simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC show that the hybrid HVDC system exhibits favorable steady state and dynamic performances, in particular, low susceptibility to commutation failure, excellent DC fault ride-through, and fast fault recovery capability. Results also indicate that the hybrid HVDC system can be a good alternative for large-capacity power transmission over a long distance byoverhead line.
This paper studies the method to predict voltage variation that can be presented in the case of operating a small-sized wind turbine in grid connection to the isolated small-sized power system. In order to do this, it makes up the simplified simulation model of the existing power plant connected to the isolated system, load, transformer, and wind turbine on the basis of PSCAD/EMTDC and compares them with the operating characteristics of the actual established wind turbine. In particular, it suggests a simplified model formed with equivalent impedance of the power system network including the load to analytically predict voltage variation at the connected point. It also confirms that the voltage variation amount calculated by the suggested method accords well with both simulation and actually measured data. The results can be utilized as a tool to ensure security and reliability in the stage of system design and preliminary investigation of a small-sized grid connected wind turbine.

Hybrid wind Diesel stand-alone power systems are considered economically viable and effective to create balance between production and load demand in remote areas where the wind speed is considerable for electric generation, and also, electric energy is not easily available from the grid. In Wind diesel hybrid system, the wind energy system is the main constitute and diesel system forms the back up. This type of hybrid power system saves fuel cost, improves power capacity to meet the increasing demand and maintains the continuity of supply in the system. Problem we face in this system is that even after producing enough power through wind turbine system, considerable portion of this power needs to be dumped due to short term oversupply of power and to maintain the frequency within close tolerances. As a result remaining portion of total energy supplied comes from the diesel generator to overcome the temporal energy shortage. This scenario decreases the overall efficiency of hybrid power system. In this study, efficient Simulink modeling for wind-diesel hybrid system is proposed and some simulations study is carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
This paper describes the design and integration of the wind- fuel cell hybrid system. The hybrid system components included a wind turbine, an electrolyzer (for generation of H2), a PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell), storage system and BOP (Balance of Plant) system. The energy input is entirely provided by a wind turbine. A DC-DC converter controls the power input to the electrolyzer, which produces hydrogen and oxygen form water. The hydrogen used the fuel for the PEMFC. The hydrogen is compressed and stored in high pressure tank by hydrogen gas booster system.

This paper proposes a high-efficiency 3-kW hybrid ESS with emergency power supply. The proposed system enables efficient use of power from photovoltaic (PV) cells and energy storage system (ESS). The proposed system can operate as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) when grid fault occurs, providing seamless transfer from grid-connected mode to stand-alone mode. The LLC converter for PV achieves ZVS turn-on of switches and ZCS turn-off of diodes, and the isolated bidirectional DC-DC converter for ESS achieves ZCS turn-off regardless of load condition, resulting in high efficiency. The efficiency and performance of the proposed hybrid ESS has been verified by a 3-kW prototype.
Reliability, availability, and cost have been the major concerns for photovoltaic hybrid systems since their beginning as primary sources for much critical applications like communication units and repeaters. This paper descnbes the performance of two hybrid systems, photovoltaic-battery, wind-turbine coupled with the public-grid (PVBWG) hybrid system and photovoltaic-battery, wind-turbine coupled With the diesel generator (PVBWD) hybrid system The systems are sized to power a typical 300W/48V de telecommunication load continuously throughout the year Such hybrid systems consist of subsystems, which in turn consist of components Failure of anyone of these components may cause failure of the entire system. The reliability and availability basics, and estimation procedure for the two proposals are introduced also in this paper. The PVBWG and PVBWD system configurations are shown with the relevant mean-time-between-faIlure (MTBF) and failure rate (${\lambda}$) of each component. The characteristics equations of the two systems are deduced as a function of operating hours and the percentage of sun and wind availabilities per day. The system probability failure as well as the reliability is estimated based on the fault tree analysis technique. The results show that, by using standard or normal components MTBF, the PVBWG is more reliable and the time of periodic maintenance period is more than one year especially in the rich sites of both sun and wind, but PVBWD competes else Also, in the first five years from the system installation, the system is quit reliable and may not require any maintenance. The results show also, as the sun and wind are available, as the system reliable and available.
Islanding detection is one of the most important issues for the distributed generation (DG) systems connected to the power grid. The conventional passive islanding detection methods inherently have a non-detection zone (NDZ), and active islanding detection methods may deteriorate the power quality of a power system. This paper proposes a novel hybrid islanding detection method based on Digital Lock-In Amplifier with no NDZ by monitoring the harmonics present in the grid. Proposed method detects islanding by passively monitoring the grid voltage harmonics and verify it by injecting small perturbation for only three-line cycles. Unlike FFT for the harmonic extraction, DLA HC have lower computational burden, moreover, DLA can monitor harmonic in real time, whereas, FFT has certain propagation delay. The simulation results are presented to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed technique. In order to prove the performance of the proposed method it is compared with several passive islanding detection methods. The experimental results confirm that the proposed method exhibits outstanding performance as compared to the conventional methods.
In this study, the unsteady flow field induced by a high-speed train passing through a tunnel is numerically simulated by using an axi-symmetric Euler Equation. The modified patched grid scheme applied to a structured grid system was used to handle the relative motion of a train. The hybrid-dimensional approach which mixed 1D and axi-symmetric dimension was used to reduce the computation time and memory storage. By employing the hybrid-dimensional approach, a long tunnel as much as 5 km was able to be simulated efficiently. The results show that the maximum pressure rise in the tunnel by the entrance of the train is a function of both train speed and train-tunnel cross-sectional area ratio. The unsteady pressure fluctuation in the tunnel and around the train was also investigated in the real condition; Korean high-speed train on the Seoul-Pusan line.
In island and backcountry areas, electrical power is usually supplied by diesel generators. It is difficult for small scale diesel generators to have an economy of scale owing to the usage of fossil fuels to produce electricity. Also, there is a problem of carbon dioxide emissions that brings some environmental pollution to the entire region of the area. For solving those, this paper proposes a design method of autonomous micro-grid to minimize the fossil fuels of diesel generator, which is composed of diesel generator, wind turbine, battery energy storage system and photovoltaic generation system. The proposed method was verified through computer simulation and micro-grid operation system.
In Korea, 22.9kV 50MVA HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) cables and 630A/3kA hybrid SFCLs (Superconducting Fault Current Limiters) have been or are being developed by LS Cable, LS Industrial System, and Korea Electric Power Research Institute. They will be installed at Icheon 154kV Substation for real-power-distribution-system operation in 2010. This paper proposes specification of current limiting resistor/reactor for the SFCL and fault current condition of the HTS cable for applying the superconducting devices to Korean power distribution system, from the viewpoint of power system protection.
