  • Many researchers have attempted to apply semi-active control systems in the civil engineering structures. Recently, magneto-rheological(MR) fluid dampers have been developed. This MR damper is one of semi-active dampers as a new class of smart dampers. This paper discusses the application of MR damper for seismic response control of adjacent buildings subjected to earthquake. Here, a controllable damping force of MR damper that is installed between adjacent buildings is applied to seismic response control. A hybrid model combines skyhook and groundhook control algorithm so that the benefits of each can be combined together. In this paper, hybrid control model are applied to the multi degree of freedom system representative of buildings in order to reduce seismic response of adjacent buildings. And the performance of hybrid control model is compared with that of others. It was demonstrated that hybrid control model or adjacent buildings with MR damper was effective for seismic response control of two adjacent buildings reciprocally.

  • Neuro-Fuzzy modeling approach is proposed to predict the dynamic behavior of a single-degree-of-freedom structure that is equipped with hybrid base isolation system. Hybrid base isolation system consists of friction pendulum systems (FPS) and a magnetorheological (MR) damper. Fuzzy model of the M damper is trained by ANFIS using various displacement, velocity, and voltage combinations that are obtained from a series of performance tests. Modelling of the FPS is carried out with a nonlinear analytical equation that is derived in this study and neuro-fuzzy training. Fuzzy logic controller is employed to control the command voltage that is sent to MR damper. The dynamic responses or experimental structure subjected to various earthquake excitations are compared with numerically simulated results using neuro-fuzzy modeling method. Numerical simulation using neuro-fuzzy models of the MR damper and FPS predict response of the hybrid base isolation system very well.

  • This study investigated the seismic performance of a hybrid damper composed of a steel slit plate and friction pads, and an optimum retrofit scheme was developed based on life cycle cost. A sample hybrid damper was tested under cyclic loading to confirm its validity as a damping device and to construct its nonlinear analysis model. The effectiveness of the optimum damper distribution schemes was investigated by comparing the seismic fragility and the life cycle costs of the model structure before and after the retrofit. The test results showed that the damper behaved stably throughout the loading history. Numerical analysis results showed that the slit-friction hybrid dampers optimally distributed based on life cycle cost proved to be effective in minimizing the failure probability and the repair cost after earthquakes.

  • This study investigates the seismic performance of a hybrid seismic energy dissipation device composed of a viscoelastic damper and a steel slit damper connected in parallel. A moment-framed structure is designed without seismic load and is retrofitted with the hybrid dampers. The model structure is transformed into an equivalent simplified system to find out optimum story-wise damper distribution pattern using genetic algorithm. The effectiveness of the hybrid damper is investigated by fragility analysis of the structure with and without the dampers. The analysis results show that after seismic retrofit the probability of reaching damage states, especially the complete damage state, of the structure turn out to be significantly reduced.

  • In the case of a concrete structure, vibration problems occur under various conditions because of its low damping performance. To solve this problem, a study on the high damping performance of the polymer concrete with hybrid damper has recently been increased. Since water is not used in polymer concrete, the curing time is short. Also, the physical properties and dynamic properties of polymer concrete are quite excellent. So polymer concrete is widely expected to be used for structural materials. The hybrid damper is the structural system that consists of steel balls and viscous fluid inside the pipe which is embedded in polymer concrete. It can reduce the structural vibrations through the energy dissipation mechanism of viscous fluid and steel balls. In this study, the physical and dynamic properties of polymer concrete with hybrid damper were compared with ordinary concrete. As a result, the elasticity coefficient and the strength of the polymer concrete with hybrid damper were so much excellent. In particular, the tensile strength was 6.5 to 10 times higher than ordinary concrete. The frequency response function and damping ratio were also compared. As a result, the dynamic Stiffness of the polymer concrete was 25% greater than that of ordinary concrete. The damping ratio of the polymer concrete was approximately 3 times higher than that of ordinary concrete. Although the dynamic stiffness of the hybrid damper showed similar tendency, the damping ratio was 3.5 times higher than that of ordinary concrete. Therefore, the polymer concrete with hybrid damper was superior to ordinary concrete.

  • This research describes the development model and testing of a hybrid damper which can be applicable to a vehicle suspension. The hybrid damper is devised to improve the performance of a conventional passive oil damper using a magneto-rheological (MR) accumulator which consists of a gas accumulator and a MR device. The level of damping is continuously variable by the means of control in the applied current in a MR device fitted to a floating piston which separates the gas and the oil chamber. A simple MR device is used to resist the movement of floating piston. At first a mathematical model which describes all flows within the conventional oil damper is formulated, and then a small MR device is also devised and adopted to a mathematical model to characterize the performance of the device.

  • Coupled building control is a viable method to protect tall buildings from seismic excitation. In this study, the semi-active control of a building complex is investigated for mitigating seismic responses. The building complex is formed of one main building and one podium structure connected through Magneto-Rheological (MR) Dampers and Tuned Mass Damper. The conventional semi-active control techniques require a primary controller as a reference to determine the desired control force, and modulate the input voltage of the MR damper by comparing the desired control force. The fuzzy logic directly determines the input voltage of an MR damper from the response of the MR damper. The control performance of the proposed fuzzy control technique for the MR damper is evaluated for the control problem of a seismically-excited building complex. In this paper, a building complex that include a 14-story main building and an 8-story podium structure is applied as a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of semi-active control with Magneto-Rheological dampers and its comparison with the passive control with the Tuned Mass Damper and two uncoupled buildings and hybrid semi-active control including the Tuned Mass Damper and Magneto-Rheological dampers while they are subject to the earthquake excitation. The numerical results show that semi-active control and hybrid semi-active control can significantly mitigate the seismic responses of both buildings, such as displacement and shear force responses, and fuzzy control technique can effectively mitigate the seismic response of the building complex.

  • As resent trends in structural construction have been to build taller and larger structures than any time in the past, they have had high flexibility and low damping that can cause large vibration response under severe environmental loading such as earthquakes, winds, and mechanical excitations. The damper with mass and sqring is one aproach to safeguarding the structure against excessive vibrations. In this paper, a large capacity hybrid-type linear motor damper(LMD) was designed and fabricated for the application to the vibration control of a large building structure model. It has been designed to be able to move the damper mass, 1,500 kg up to ${\pm}250mm$ strokes at the first mode natural frequency of the building structure model, ${\pm}0.51Hz$. Linear motor is consisted of the fixed coil and the movable NdFeB permanent magnets field part. The PM field part composed magnet modules and iron yoke, is the damper mass itself, 1500kg. LMD therefore has a simplified structure and requires a few elements in the driving system, being compared with a rotary motor damper and a hydraulic damper. However, the manufacture of large PM linear actuator is difficult because of the limit of PM size and the attraction and repulsion at the assembly of PM. Therefore, large damper system is manufactured and tested for dynamic characteristics and frequency response.

  • This paper presents real-time hybrid test method of large-scale MR damper applied to a building structure under seismic excitation. The real-time hybrid test using an actuator for the control performance evaluation of a MR damper controlling the response of earthquake-excited building structure is experimentally implemented. In the test, the building structure is used as a numerical part, on which a large-scale MR damper adopted as an experimental part was installed to reduce its response. At first, the force that is acting between a MR damper and building structure is measured from the load cell attached on the actuator system and is fed-back to the computer to control the motion of the actuator. Then, the actuator is so driven that the error between the interface displacement computed from the numerical building structure with the excitations of earthquake and the fed-back interface force and that measured from the actuator. The control efficiency of the MR damper used in this paper is experimentally confirmed by implementing this process of experiment on real-time.
