BINARIES IN OPEN STAR CLUSTERS: PHOTOMETRIC APPROACH WITH APPLICATION TO THE HYADES

  • A new method has been developed to solve the star cluster membership problem. It is based on synthetic photometry employing the Black Body concept as stellar radiation simulator. Synthetic color-magnitude diagram is constructed showing the main sequence band and the positions of binary star systems of combinations of various components through different photometric tracks. The method has been applied to the Hyades. The cluster membership problem has been re-appraised for the cluster (both single and binary) stars. For the binary members, the components' spectral types have been derived by the method. The results obtained agree very well with those found in literature, The method is simpler than the others and can be developed to undertake other cases as multiple star systems.

  • The rotational properties of late-type main sequence stars in the solar neighborhood have been investigated. So rotation periods and stellar radii are determined for 104 field stars, 8 Ursa Major Group stars, and 20 Hyades cluster stars. Most of the rotation periods are derived using the Noyes et al. (1984)'s relation between chromospheric activity and rotation period. Stellar radii are calculated by the Stefan law for the nearby stars within 25 pc from the sun. Rotational velocities at equator are determined by the above rotation periods and stellar radii. Their distribution along the (B-V) color shows an upper boundary and an abrupt drop for the stars in the range of 0.4<(B-V)<0.8, as found from the apparent rotational velocity data. Furthermore, it is apparent that there is an lower boundary of rotational velocity. The inclination of rotation axis to line-of-sight is obtained by comparing the rotational velocity at equator with the apparent rotational velocity given by the analysis of the line profiles. For the field stars, it is found that the inclination has no correlation with the galactic lattitude and follows random distribution.

Distance and Reddening of NGC 6791 using Empirically Calibrated Isochrones

  • Although the theory of stellar structure and evolution is considered one of the most successful developments in astrophysics, there still remains a significant mismatch between theoretical stellar models and the observed main sequence of the best studied nearby open clusters. To ease the tension, empirical corrections to the color-temperature transformations are used as a simple, but practical way of overcoming the difficulty than directly examining stellar atmosphere models that have large theoretical complexities and uncertainties. I will describe our continuing effort to calibrate stellar isochrones using cool main-sequence stars in Praesepe, complementing our previous work based on the Hyades and the Pleiades, and provide an extensive test of our models using photometry of cool and metal-rich main-sequence stars in NGC 6791. Finally, I will discuss the implication of our results on the mass loss in NGC 6791.

LUMINOSITY FUNCTIONS AND MASS FUNCTIONS OF EIGHT OPEN CLUSTERS

  • The well observed 8 open clusters, NGC 6530, 2264, 654, 129, 2168, Pleiades, Praesepe and Hyades were selected on the basis of photometric observation and proper motion study. The luminosity functions (LF) and mass functions (MF) of these clusters are different with cluster age and they could be divided into three age groups (t<$10^7$ yrs, $10^7$$10^8$ yrs, $10^8$$10^9$ yrs). From these LF's and MF's, the mean LF and MF of the open clusters are derived and these functions suggest the time-dependent initial mass function (IMF) and the variation of observed MF with cluster age.

THE MASS OF PROGENITORS OF WHITE DWARFTS IN OPEN CLUSTERS

  • 31 white dwarfs in 10 open clusters are examined, and their maximum mass and the upper mass limit of their progenitors are obtained as $1.22\pm0.02M_{\bigodot}\;and\;7.2\pm0.4M_{\bigodot}$ respectively, suggesting that the upper mass limit of white dwarfs is less than 8M_{\bigodot}$ The final mass of white dwarfs shows no clear correlation with the initial mass of their progenitors, and it is found that a deficient gap of initial mass exists between $\~4\;and\;~5.2M_{\bigodot}$. This gap seems to correspond to the mass range for carbon detonation or deflagration. The total expected numbers of white dwarfs are $11\~22$ in Hyades with 7 known white dwarfs and 17 in Praesepe with 8 known white dwarfs. These known white dwrfs are all younger than the others in both clusters. But one known white dwarf in Pleiades is older one among $2\~3$ expected white dwarfs.

H-R DIAGRAM FOR NEARBY HIGH-VELOCITY STARS

  • About two hundred stars within 50 pc from the sun, whose tangential velocity larger than 100 km/sec, have been selected on the basis of their proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes. A list of them along with their photoelectric UBV data and spectral types is given. The criterion on the tangential velocity, $v_t$ > 132 km/sec, was adopted for selection of high-velocity stars. The H-R diagram of these nearby high-velocity stars resembles that of a globular cluster, with the turnoff around $B-V{\approx}0.35$ and $M_v{\approx}4.0$, and the subdwarfs among these high-velocity stars are fainter than the main-sequence stars of Hyades by the amount of $1^m.25{\pm}0^m.30$ in the region with B-V < 1.40 on the average.

  • In order to check whether the 4-degree objective prism spectra can be used for deep spectroscopic studies of galactic structure, we measured the Rose(1984)'s seven indices between 3500 A and 4400 A for 19 Hyades stars on the Kiso Schmidt prism plate, K3496. By comparing the $4^{\circ}$-indices with those of Rose(1984), we have found that $H{\delta}/FeI$, $H{\gamma}/4325$, and P(3912)/P(CN) measured on the 4-degree prism spectra, are still useful for the derivation physical parameters.

  • The present day mass functions of main sequence stars in the well observed open clusters, Hyades, Praesepe, Pleiades, NGC 654 and NGC 6530 arc derived and compared with those computed from the model of time-dependent initial mass function and star formation rate. The agreements between the observed and computed present day mass functions suggest the importance of fragmentation process at the early phase and fragment interaction at the later phase of cluster evolution. This process of star formation is different from that related to the evolution of the solar neighborhood, and also could explain the lack of low mass stars observed in some open clusters.

UBV I CCD PHOTOMETRY OF THE OLD OPEN CLUSTER NGC 1193

  • We present UBV I photometry of the old open cluster NGC 1193. Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of this cluster show a well defined main sequence and a sparse red giant branch. For the inner region of r < 50", three blue straggler candidates are newly found in addition to the objects Kaluzny (1988) already found. The color-color diagrams show that the reddening value toward NGC 1193 is E(B - V ) = $0.19{\pm}0.04$. From the ultraviolet excess measurement, we derived the metallicity to be [Fe/H]= $-0.45{\pm}0.12$. A distance modulus of ${(m\;-\;M)}_0$ = $13.3{\pm}0.15$ is obtained from zero age main sequence fitting with the empirically calibrated Hyades isochrone of Pinsonneault et al. (2004). CMD comparison with the Padova isochrones by Bertelli et al. (1994) gives an age of log t = $9.7{\pm}0.1$.
