  • Railway vehicles are capable of indicating several types of instability. This phenomenon, which is called hunting motion, is a self excited lateral oscillation that is caused by the running velocity of the vehicle and wheel frail interactive forces. The interactive forces act to change effectively the damping characteristics of railway vehicle systems. This paper will show the impact of instability on the transfer function behavior using damping characteristics of secondary suspension. The vehicle dynamics are modeled using a 17 degree of freedom considering linear wheel/rail contact. The paper deals with certain condition of the damper characteristics that one is about various damping coefficient and another is equipped damper direction.

  • This research has been performed to estimate the hunting motion hysteresis of railway passenger cars. An old and a new car with almost same structure are chosen as analysis models. To solve effectively a set of simultaneous equations of motion strongly coupled with creep relations, shooting algorithm in which the nonlinear relations are regarded as a two-point boundary value problem is adopted. The bifurcation theory is applied to the dynamic analysis to distinguish differences between linear and nonlinear critical speeds by variation of parameters. It is found that there are some factors and their operation area to make nonlinear critical speed respond to them more sensitivity than linear critical speed. Full-scale roller rig tests are carried out for the validation of the numerical results. Finally, it is concluded that the wear of wheel profile and the stiffness discontinuities of wheelset suspension caused by deterioration have to be considered in the analysis to predict hysteresis of critical speed precisely.

  • In this paper, we employ a dynamics modeling method for investigating a multi-body dynamics system of semi-submersible autonomous underwater vehicles consisting of a towing vehicle operated near the water surface, a tow cable, and a towfish. The towfish, which is towed by a marine cable for the purposes of exploration or mine hunting, is modeled with a Six-Degree-of-Freedom (6-DOF) equation of motion that reflects its hydrodynamics characteristics. The towing cable, which can experience large displacements and deformations, is modeled using an absolute nodal coordinate formulation. To reflect the hydrodynamic characteristics of the cable during motion, the hydrodynamic force due to added mass and the drag force are imposed. To verify the completeness of the modeling, a few simple numerical simulations were conducted, and the results confirm the physical plausibility of the model.

  • This research has been performed to reveal the hysteresis phenomena of the hunting motion in a railway passenger cars. It is found that there are some factors and its operation region to make the nonlinear critical speed reacts to them more sensitively than the linear critical speed. The simulation results show that a self steering bogie system can be a substitute proposal to improve curving Performance together with the reduction of hysteresis of critical speed. Full scale roller rig test is carried out for the validation of the numerical results. Finally, it is certified that wear of wheel profile and stiffness discontinuities of wheelset suspension caused by deterioration have to be considered in the analysis to predict the hysteresis of critical speed precisely.

  • As freight traffic becomes heavier, the high speed of existing freight cars is essential, instead of the construction of a new railway. The high speed can be achieved by the modifications of freight bogie design. In this paper, an analytical model of freight bogie is developed to decide the critical speed. The dynamic responses of the analytical model are compared with the experimental data from a running test of freight bogie and showed good agreements between them. The analytical model is used to find the design of freight bogie. The parameter studies show that the reduction of wheelset mass ratio and the increase of the axle distance of freight bogie can increase the critical speed, but the primary lateral stiffness has little effects on the critical speed. And this study also shows that smaller wheel conicity deteriorates the running safety of freight car, which means that the overhauling of the wheel of freight bogie should be done regularly.

  • As the freight traffic becomes heavier, the high speed of existing freight cars is essential instead of the construction of a new railway. The high speed can be achieved by the design modifications of the freight bogie. In this paper, an analytical model of freight bogie including the lateral force between rail and the flange of wheel is developed to decide the critical speed, which activates a hunting motion and tells the running safety of freight bogie. The dynamic responses of the analytical model were compared with an experimental data from a running test of a freight bogie and showed good agreements between them. The analytical model is used to find the design modifications of the freight bogie by parameter studies. • Type of the high-speed train under development has been decided to be EMU(electric multiple Units) following the trend of the times, which is weak for vibration and noise due to the distributed traction unit of motors and gears than that of the articulated high-speed train. Also, passengers may feel uncomfortable at high-speed running due to the various vibration of vehicle itself and bogie, especially due to hunting, snake motion of the high-speed train. In this paper, explained was the program to develop the high-speed EMU at every step of basic and detail design and running test, predict and try to reduce the vibration.

  • High-speed train under development is a type of EMU(electric multiple units). Since power sources like motors and gears are distributed in the high-speed EMU, the high-speed EMU generates vibration and sound more than the articulated high-speed train. Vibration of vehicle, vibration between rails and wheels, hunting of bogie and snake motion reduce ride comfort. In this paper, to decrease the vibration of the articulated high-speed train, improvements were presented using an analytical model and a simulation model. The simulation model of the high-speed EMU was designed on the basis of the korean high-speed train and the design parameters for ride comfort were showed and the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle was understood. To consider the characteristics of the vehicle suspension, the analytical model was designed and the simulation model was verified with it.

  • A Linear Stepping Motor(LSM) can operate open loop control mode similarly to a rotary stepping motor. The linear motion without any mechanical linkage in the LSM results in several advantages for precise positioning actuators. However, to realize the more stable and higher speed control without hunting, it is necessary to derive an equivalent circuit to explain the steady-state and transisent characteristics in order to find an adequate control rule for high performance control of the LSM. In this paper, magnetic equivalent circuit is obtained, based on the structure of the LSM, and then the electric equivalent circuit of the LSM is derived by solving equations for the magnetic equivalent circuit. The 1-step response characteristic of the LSM is analyzed by the ACSL with the voltage equations, the force equations, the force equations and the kinetic equation.

  • This study describes the tail vibration reduction for the next generation high speed EMU(HEMU-430X). The model of 6 cars was generated and the calculation was performed using VAMPIRE(railway vehicle dynamic software). In view of ride characteristics, HEMU-430X was expected to sway at the tail because of the yaw damper direction. The lateral acceleration of vehicle body exceeded the criteria because of hunting. To reduce this hunting motion, some methods such as wheel profile change, the change of damping coefficient for the 2nd lateral damper, the damping coefficient change of yaw damper were tested, but had little effect. Finally, the yaw damper direction was changed and the tail vibration disappeared. In real running test, the tail vibration appeared at the speed of 150km/h and the yaw damper direction change made the vehicle stable at the speed of 300km/h. The maximum test speed of HEMU-430X is 430km/h. If the tail vibration appears at higher speed, some other methods in this study may be considered to reduce it.
