  • Chinese phonology is called 'juexue(絶學)' in Chinese linguistics field. For this, students of in Chinese universities as well as college students in Korea is unwilling to learn it. Chinese character phonetic is a very valuable resource in Sino-China comparative study as well as the Chinese phonology area. This study was attempt to develop the content model on education of Chinese phonology, such as Middle Chinese, Old Chinese, using close the data of Chinese character phonetic for students of Korea. In addition, I also make it known that contents of this paper is not a new discovery or analysis but recycling research of existing.

  • The history of printing technology in Korea is studied by investigating existing ancient documents and records and comparing accumulated data and knowledge. Cultural property research requires non-destructive testing and observation with the naked eye or aided by a microscope. Researchers' experience and knowledge are required even though they cannot guarantee the outcome. For ancient documents and records that are presumed to consist of woodblock printing, wood type printing, metal type printing, or their combinations, each researcher draws various opinions and conclusions. This often causes confusion and divides the opinions of ordinary citizens and field specialists. Among them, the criteria for judging ancient documents or books printed using woodblock and metal movable material are ambiguous. Academic research on the development history of printing technology in ancient Korea has been stagnant, and conflicts among researchers have also erupted. Involvement of national investigative agencies not specialized in cultural properties has exacerbated the situation. In this study, we investigated printing characteristics that are likely to serve as more objective judgment criteria by quantitatively analyzing the experiments of retrieving several sheets of Korean paper (Hanji) using a replicated Hunminjeongeum (訓民正音) woodblock and quantitatively analyzing the images of the printed papers. In addition, the validity and questions for the typical phenomena presented as a method for distinguishing between woodblock and metal print are reviewed. We investigated the possibility of developing new objective judgement criteria through quantitative analysis using image analysis and investigating the printing characteristics of Korean paper through a reproduction experiment of woodblock printing.

  • The purpose of the present study was to explore the radiological and acoustic characteristics of "Arae-a" (/${\cdot}$/) articulation in two male Jeju language speakers, focusing on selected measures in radiological images derived from computed tomography scans, as well as the first and the second formant measures in selected vowels. An elderly male speaker (a 78-year-old) and a young male speaker (a 34-year-old) participated in the study. During the production of four selected vowels, the shape of the vocal tract was identified, and selected measures were obtained from the elderly participant's computed tomography (CT) scans. For acoustic analysis, the participants were given a list of near-minimal pairs consisting of 112 words and asked to read them aloud. The results indicated that the "Arae-a" (/${\cdot}$/) articulation of the elderly speaker showed unique acoustic and radiological characteristics compared to other similar vowels, thus presenting substantial consistency with the descriptions of the "Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon." In contrast, the F1 and F2 measures of the young male's /${\cdot}$/ articulation were not distinguished from those of /ㅗ/. Current results, in part, support the scientific principles underlying the invention of "Arae-a," which reflects the shape of the vocal tract during production, and the necessity for further research.

A Study on O-eum(五音) and Oseong(五聲) in "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)" and "Akhakgwebeom(樂學軌範)" ("황제내경(黃帝內經)"과 "악학궤범(樂學軌範)"의 오음(五音과 오성(五聲)에 대한 고찰(考察))

  • At first, we explained concepts of Oseong(五聲) in "Akhakgwebeom(樂學軌範)" and then compared them with O-eum(五音) in "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)". In that progress we can have recognized the commonness and differences between two texts, and became familiar with ideas of sounds in minds of ancients. That ideas are concerned with true nature of human and cosmos. Based on that ideas, we could return to stasis of mutual understanding with each other, it means a condition of harmony. For that purpose we must understand detail meanings of O-eum(五音) and Oseong(五聲), and this analysis lead clinical music therapy to do an important thing as methodology of treating human body and minds. The ideas of O-eum(五音) in "Akhakgwebeom(樂學軌範)" are not exactly corresponded to vocalization of Hunminjeongeum(訓民正音) that is Korean characters, and Oseong(五聲) in "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)". But this dissonancy is a problem of methodology, on the contrary, there are many common concepts and possibilities of application to practical uses between them.

  • A Hangul input method consists of two core components: key layout for primitive units (Natja), and binding rules to form more complex, composite units from primitive ones. However, careless design and implementation of an input method may result in ambiguity and inability of contiguous typing, when it comes to handle composite Hangul units. This is due to the collective nature of Hangul, namely, existence of implicit boundaries between units and syllables. This issue gets more challenging for the context-dependent 2-beolsik method, mobile environment having significantly fewer keys, and yet addition of the support for Old Hangul. For the sake of the management of complexity, we devised a system in which the binding rule is divided into two layers rather than one. Based on this concept, we implemented a tool program that, given the primitive units and their binding rules, generates input details of every composite unit and detects any potential ambiguity and conflicts. We presented the actual analysis result for Samsung Cheonji-in and KT Naratgeul, two of the most popular mobile Hangul input methods used in Korea.

  • This paper proposes the Hunminjungum Keypad that applied the creation principle of Hunminjungum to the design of keypad. The proposed keypad arranged 28 letters of Hunminjungum to have correlations with each other between consonants, between vowels, and between consonants and vowels. That is, Consonant buttons are arranged by grouping letters of the same sound by sounds of five voices. And the vowel buttons are arranged at the bottom and the right side of the consonant area according to the position where a vowel is attached to the consonant. In the meantime, Hangul keypads have mainly used 12 button keypads in 4 lines and 3 columns. These keypads have structurally disadvantageous in the touch count and moving distance. Recently, keypads with many letter buttons such as QWERTY and single-vowel are also used a lot. If the number of letter buttons provided in the keypad increases, touch count decreases. And If the letter buttons are arranged to have a correlation with each other, the moving distance becomes smaller. The experimental results show that the proposed keypad has high efficiency in all evaluation factors such as touch count, moving distance and input time.
